Lost my nut
« on: September 25, 2004, 06:26:13 PM »

Was changing the oil in preparation for the Smokies trip and noticed the nut was missing off the rear exhaust support.  Should be able to find something to get by between now and Monday AM when I leave, but suppose I can't, what is the opinion about running 2,000 miles without it?  Is this what causes the cracks like WFP had?

take a look for one with the nylon that locks it (nylock) or double nut it.....you will be much happier with the reassurance.

I doubt the nylon would withstand the temperatures in this application.  Just got back from the harware store and got too small a size.  Back I go, again! [smiley=furious.gif]

Thanks for the input, guys.  I just used a plain ol' stainless nut and washer for now.  Will try the nylock route when I get back.

Johnnabal, yep, that's the one we're talking about and yes, there should be one there.  In fact, in your photo you can clearly see the mark the nut left on the bracket.  The factory nut is a keeps nut (nut with an integral washer).

I lost that same nut in the first two thousand miles. I torqued the new one down with some blue locktite and have had no more problems.

LOL, spelling errors are my pet peeve.  I meant "keps nut."  Kep nut: also known as k-lock nuts.  A six-sided nut pre-assembled with a free spinning external tooth lock washer.  The locking action is achieved when the nut is tightened against a bearing surface as the teeth of the lock washer dig into it.  (Note:  the origin of the word came from ShaKEProof.)

Thank u. I knew I probably seen such a nut but never knew what it was called. Wasn't trying to be funny, thought that what they were called like u said. Spelling is not my strong suit. Math is. Always calling down stairs for help with the spelling here. No spell checker that I know of.

Hey, no sweat, Johnnabal!  It's a stupid name for a nut, anyway.  If I can get my hands on one, I'll bring one to the Smokies for you!

Take care and ride safe!

This has overtones of the peeling chrome epidemic!

Damn!, I lost mine after about 3k miles also. What gives? Replaced it with a nut and compression washer. Made it to 19k w/o it falling off again. [smiley=nixweiss.gif]

Yep, mine was gone too. Dealer put a new one one. Seems Harley's "quality control" folks just don't control enough. (if they're  even looking) With the guages that don't work, the clutch that chatters and the nuts, paint and chrome that fall off, does anyone get the feeling that Harley's backsliding to the bowling ball days? But they still look pretty good, don't they.
