Hard to realize it was 59 years ago today that JFK was assassinated.  Us old farts will recall where they were that day.  Me I was at college on the parade field during my Air Force ROTC period.  RIP.  We hardly knew 'ya.

Had the news on this morning and noticed the lack of acknowledgment of this anniversary.

I was standing at the base of the steps outside our home when I heard the news.

I was 2 1/2 when Diem and Kennedy's assassinations occurred in short order..  First significant political memory was dad driving out in the mountains above Los Angeles and seeing Watts burn in 1965.  Then Apollo 1 and Tet (neighborhood kid's older brother was KIA).  Cities burning.  Kent State.  RFK assassination and George Wallace getting shot.  Moon landing.  And others.  Last half of the 60s could catch a SoCal kid's attention.

I was painting Chevelle front ends, on the assembly line at the GM Plant, in Tarrytown, N.Y., when the announcement came over the intercom. Sad day  :(. They shut down the lines, and let us leave.

I was just coming off the rifle range at Parris Island.

We learned to pack everything we owned in our sea bags in 20 minutes in preparation for departure to Camp Legune and overseas.

It was evening here, and I and a friend were playing in our living room when the news came on our old black and white TV.  I was 12.

And thank you for that.  I was old enough to experience the reactions and the news here but a decade too young to hit the draft.  Though I still vividly remember as time got closer some of those "predicters" that hit the rags on the grocery store checkout lines that would warn about what your lottery number would be and the surprise and even relief when selective service was cancelled.  Then, not that long after, being a first in line at the post office when registration came back.

The odd details one recalls are, well, odd...  A minister at the Presbyterian church my folks went to during the kids' service quietly telling the kids it was the boys' duty to burn their draft cards when they got them and the girls' duty to burn their bras.  To this day I'm sure that guy was half right.

School let out early, with no explanation. 2nd grade.  I walked home, my Mom was ironing, my Dad was home from work way too early, & the tv was on. My Dad never left work early.  Figured out JFK had been shot.  We lived about 70 miles south of Dallas.  TV was on for days, a sad time.

Draft stopped the year I graduated, my number was too high for me to be drafted anyway. Lots of turmoil in the 60s, saw it on tv but locally we did have some trouble.

After I married we moved to the DFW area for school/work & anyone & everyone that came to visit wanted to see where JFK got shot.  An older friend of mine was there that day, and was close enough to see it all. Very close. He & a friend of his took off work each year to go to Dealy Plaza to remember.  It affected him greatly, he had the saddest look when he spoke about it.

We lived a few miles from where Oswald was buried. I have visited Arlington Cemetery. No comparison except both are cemetaries.

I was 9 months old, so no memory of it.  I do remember Watts burning, and Apollo.

I was 6 years old and remember watching funeral or traveling to it, they were on a train, I also remember Apolo 1 while riding my minibike around the yard, also remember Kent State since I lived about 10 miles away and was a little older.

I was 7 at the time and all I remember is being upset because all my favourite TV shows were cancelled with the coverage on every station.  I also remember my Dad standing at the bar in our family room watching it and crying at the loss.

I have been to Deeley Plaza 4 times and every time it gives me the chills.  A terrible loss for not just the US but the world all over.

I highly recommend at trip to Dallas to see first hand where it all went down.  It will move you, I guarantee it.

I was in Newport News, VA. Ferguson High school 9th grade. The loud speakers came to life " Report to your home room immediately for further updates. President Kennedy has been shot in Dallas, Texas!" Words Ill never forget. Like when I was told at age 11, " Mike your daddy is dead." Two major shockers.
