SEEG Shifter shaft

My wife hasn't been on a bike with me but 10 minutes in the last 21 years. Out of nowhere she decides she wants to go to Helen, GA on the bike. I'll be darned if the shifter shaft broke on inside of heel/toe. Thankfully I was pulling away from stop sign and didn't lose the pedals. If there something special to the shafts with a range of $12-35? One specifically I should get?
