Transmission main shaft bearings
« on: April 09, 2009, 10:09:03 AM »

I recently added the new style Baker Bearing for the trans main shaft - you can see it in my post about the DD6.

I just found out through another member here that there is an alternative that looks like it is worthy of consideration.

(plagiarized from the HTT site)

http://harleytechtalk.net/htt/index.php

S&S has a bearing race setup similar to the MoCo's item.

The difference being that the pressed on inner race has an internal taper to keep it from moving in towards the trans case and uses snap rings to keep it from moving out.

Opinions comments?

I like the idea of the roller vs. ball bearing and the bearing being in the oil bath.

Below is the Baker Bearing

This is the trans main shaft.
The MoCo and S&S inner race is pressed on to this shaft. The Baker is a slip fit here

S&S race with a snap ring.

Not sure what the snap ring is doing. I did post that question over at HTT and we'll see what the response is.

If you look in the first picture you can see there are no snap ring grooves, so maybe the snaps are just being used as spacers and the clutch basket is doing the work of keeping the spacer from moving out.

The race isn't cheap either - out of the 09 Fatbook, page 498 (list prices)

INNER PRIMARY MAINSHAFT BEARING RACE

1120-0148 For all 91-06 Big Twin (except 06 Dyna) $74.95

DS version of the inner bearing
INNER PRIMARY MAINSHAFT BEARING
PART # DESCRIPTION SUG. RETAIL
1132-0005 For 85-06 Big Twin models (except 06 Dyna Glide);
repl. OEM #s 9135/60678-85 $41.95

HIGH TORQUE BEARING/SEAL KIT
PART # DESCRIPTION SUG. RETAIL
1110-0018 For 85-06 Big Twin (except 06 Dyna Glide);

The picture says the two snaprings keep the spacer from walking on the shaft but there is no groove cut for the snaprings.    :nixweiss:

As the shaft splines are tapered down to the 2 snap rings, are they just used as tension retainers? Seems like the bearing would still walk, unless as you said, the basket holds them in place.

More from HTT.

Apparentyl the 2 snap rings are only used as a spacer.
