Whistler Cruisader Motorcycle Radar Detector
« on: April 01, 2006, 01:44:48 PM »

Does anyone have experience using this radar detector?  It seems like a good product that is specifically designed for a motorcycle.  Thanks,  John

Be sure to check which states you ride in on the legality of use. ;D
I know in Virginia radar detectors are illegal and they use radar detector detectors to find you. Virginia residents get a ticket and the unit confiscated. Out-of-state  folks just get the ticket. 8-)

I was stationed in Virginia for a year back in '95.  Used a detector with "VG-2" circuitry and it kept me from getting caught with the detector at least once a week on the freeway.  Those detector-detectors really do work.  I was an Illinois resident at the time, so had it from there.  I believe Wash, DC it is illegal as well.  Conn. use to be, but a couple years ago, I went through there on my way to R.I. and didn't see the signs prohibiting them any more.

Only places they're illegal to use now is the state of Virginia and the Disctrict of Columbia.

The few tests I've seen have not been very positive of the Whistler brand in general.  There's radartest.com, radarbusters.com, speedzones.com, myradardetector.com as well as others.  Most sites don't rate the Whistler as being even half way up the ladder.  I only saw one site where POP detection had the Whistler rated well (speedzones.com).  Who knows?

How do that K40 mount on the SEUC?  I really like the idea of the Whistler being built in rather than stuck on somewhere.

I have this installed on my m/c along with the radar/laser blockers. Both sources are located in the front and back. It HAS saved my A$$ many times, by warning me. I don't know if the blockers actually work, but then again, how would I. The fact that I haven't gotten any speeding tickets since I installed these (Cage too) I believe it all to be worth it. Price alone is the same as the savings of one tocket with a lawyer. There are many pictures in my homepage's section, showing both the sensors, and the blockers. Any questions I can help with, do not hesitate.
See you all in Cripple Creek!

I hope you make it to the Napa/Quincy ride this weekend.  I'd like to meet you and also to get a look at this setup.  I seem to attrack the radar tickets. [smiley=nixweiss.gif]

I went ahead and ordered this unit.  There is a local radio shop who will do the install.  I'll let you know how it works.

Tested out the jammer/blocker on a car we had traded in with the local police dept., the laser they use wouldn't lock although it displayed a speed for a short time like it was locking, it had no lock and went blank.

Officer said it was legal in Washington State as well.

Got the Crusader installed and used it on the 22 mile ride home.  Seemed to be working.  Had it set on "city" so the garage door openers didnt send false alarms.  THey\ installer put the alert light between the speedo and Tach on the fairing dash.  Should be easy to see.  THere is also a setting that turns the pod backlight off and the pod will flash on when radar is detected.

I had a email conversation with Whistler and they are developing a waterproof audio alert that can be added to my unit at sometime in the future.  THe guy at Whistler was not real sure on when it will be available.

First chance I get I'll take some pics and post them.

Last weekend I had a chance to use the Cruisader on a ride from Chicago to Conesville Iowa.  At higher rpms the alert for a laser would be triggered.  So I called Whistler and my installer.  The short story version is the installer put a power line filter on and I have not had any "rpm" laser alerts since the power filter has been put on.  I do think not having an audio alert is a drawback but not a major one.  I'll try to get some pics posted soon.

As promised here are 3 pics of the installed Cruisader.  I think it is a good product that could be great when Whistler make the Audio alert available.  It is a bit hart to see the sensor below the headlamp but it is there.  The other sensor is buried inside the faiirng.  The added alert light between the speedo and tack flashes a blue tinted light when activated.  Harley provides as standard equipment on the SCEG a toggle switch for an accessory that I used as the on/off switch.

THe power line filter is specific to the detector.  Is this what you are asking.  THe filter only effects the power supply to the detector.

In all honesty the Cruisader sucks at detecting radar/laser and I have done extensive testing on that unit.

If you are looking for a good radar detector system, check out what I installed on my 2003 Ultra at www.stealthhog.com

BTW, if anyone on the forum is interested in any of the equipment we sell let me know. We will offer a 5% to 10% discount if you call and ask for me

Also we do have the Cruisader in stock. On the site we list of $379.00 but call me and we can sell a few units at $245.00
