1000 mile oil change
« on: October 28, 2014, 01:36:37 PM »

I always rain Redline 20-60 V twin oil in my 120 Tman Street Glide.  Now I have my 15 CVO at about a 1000 miles and was going to change the oil before winter in the great white north.  Would the Redline or Mobil one V twin 20-60 be ok for the my 110 at the initial oil change?  Thanks for the input. Spook

mobil 1 doesn't have a 20-60.  but you could change your oil with either.  i use the redline 20-60 in the summer, and 20-50 in the winter, but both have a cold weather rating of 20 so cold starts should be equivalent.  i've never really worried if i don't make the 5k oil change to 20-50 before winter comes, or if it's still cold, but going into the spring, i'll change it with the 20-60.  but, i live in the deep south, our winters are much milder than yours.

Redline does but Mobil 1 does not offer a 20-60.  So if something about your environmentals really requires the greater variable viscosity there is finally (thankfully) an oil thread with nothing to talk about as there is but the single option  :drink: .

If you live and mainly ride in the "far north", there isn't much reason to run a 60 weight motor oil, the 50 weight stuff is fine.  However, if you want to run 60 weight for some reason, it isn't going to hurt anything if you make the change at the 1000 mile mark.

Thanks for the replies.  I would run the 20-60 simply because I have a case of redline left over from the 120. But then again maybe I would just start using the Mobil one because I can buy it locally rather than have to order it as no one locally stocks Redline products.  Predicting snow flurries this weekend.  Ugh! It is coming I am afraid.  Thanks. Spook.

So I have heard good things about the redline Tranny and Primary fluid but have heard that I should stick with mobil for the engine oil.  Any thought.  I just rolled 1K and am calling tomorrow for my appointment to do the service.  I will do them myself moving forward...

I use Mobile1 in the crankcase and Redline everywhere else. The transmission oil is the big reason why. From the first change it took away (or seriously quieted down) the Harley Clunk when shifting into first.

That case of oil you already bought is a sunk cost. It doesn't cost you anything more unless you don't use it.

I have decided to give Amsoil a try on this bike. I have heard and read a lot of good thing about it. I have a buddy that is a dealer and someone just opened a full store in Omaha, NE.

Must admit I'm a Redline fan. Used it in the Primary and Transmission of my 2008 Ultra and quietened everything down nicely. Will use Syn3 in the new Limited for a while as I purchased enough to do 5 oil changes when I bought the bike.

Thanks for the replies.  Just finished the oil change with Mobil one.  Waiting for my redline transmission fluid to change that. Not sure about the primary as I usually just run regular HD primary lube.  Spook
