Sticky throttle
« on: March 20, 2010, 01:21:52 PM »

First ride of the year yesterday.  Left the house with everything working as it should.  Awhile into i set the cruise at highway speed...looked down a bit later and was doing about 140 (KPH) still on cruise!
Seems the throttle grip had worked itself into the housing just enough to stick (not rollback) so the cruise got set at the position of the grip, not speed.
This is a first.  Was a simple fix, but the reason I'm posting this is that the bike has over 6K Kms on it and never had a problem like this.  Could have been interesting if it happened riding around town.
Always something....

Glad you're OK.  Was the bike parked next to a Toyota by any chance?

You don't mention year of bike.  If before electronic throttle a bad stepper cable from the cruise module to the throttle body or carb can sneak up on you as well. They'll stick a little so that whenever the system pulls the throttle to climb a grade that new pull won't be released by the cable. Ends up causing incremental acceleration that can sneak up on you.

Details..is an '09 SERG (ride by wire).  Weird part was that it happened while riding.  Just loosening and re-tightening the housing allowed everything to fit right again.  I did check for Japanese parts though!

My SESG did the same. My guess would be the York guys smacked the grip then tightened the control switch bolts. As said, easy fix. Found mine when backing the bike into the garage. Was doing 3 grand with no hands.
