« on: October 12, 2009, 09:39:33 AM »

Just picked up a 2006 FLHTCUSE outta TX. I live up here in WA. So I got the bike and started it but when the idle dropped it doesnt want to stay running until its completely warm. Any input???

I think i would try a re-flashing the ECM first if that didnt work start checking the various engine sensors, starting with the MAP sensor.  :nixweiss:

Doesn't say what if any tuning device is on the bike.  Some of them allow controls (directly or indirectly) for cold idle.  Might be something as simple as a problem you could straighten out by hooking up a laptop in your garage.

I wouldn't, however, just do a reflash of the ECM without knowing first if there's a tuning device that's been added and what kind.  If it has been tuned a reflash of the ECM will likely either wipe out the tuning effort already done to the bike or potentially change the baseline under which that tune was done.

The OE basemap shouldn't have changed if that's all that's there.  While it's possible that map was corrupted somehow it's probably not likely that would happen in a way that only effects cold idle.  If it's been tuned at sometime it's very possible for that work to impact cold idle.

If the bike is running well, however, you don't want to change everything; which is what a reflash of the basemap might do.  If the bike runs well after its warm and assuming it is a software related problem you're better served having someone correct the specific problem rather than tossing everything and starting over again.  There are also a couple of sensors on the bike that could account for a cold idle problem.  So might not be map related at all.

Certainly do need to get it sorted out.  But might hold off on the complete reflash until a bit more is known about what's on the bike and more detail on the specifics of the potential causes.

Make sure you don't have an exhaust leak also.  Something as simple as a broken exhaust bracket (resulting in a open crack or hole in your header) could cause your motor to not idle...

Good point(s) TwoLane.. See what i get for assuming... I thought everyone had a tunable ECM.  :nixweiss: If he does.. I hope he got the dongle with the bike purchase.. I've heard of many missing dongles with used bike purchases.. And don't buy one on E-Bay,, It wont work unless you get lucky and buy the one married to your ECM  :'( Again, assuming you have a SERT

Just wanted to think everyone for their input. I have a couple other bikes but Ive never put any power commanders on them so dont know the first thing about that stuff. Guess its probably time to learn. For now think I'll just take it to the shop. Thanks again for everything,  I think this is a great site

Have you checked the bike for trouble codes? It is an easy thing to check. Do a search on the site and you will find the process.

I don't know if HD is still using them on that year of a bike, but on my 00' Ultra I had the same problem. It took my dealer forever to figure out the problem. It ended up being an idle motor. I guess there is, or at least in 00' there was an electric motor that controlled the bike's idle. Good luck!

Just noticed these new replies, Thanks again for all the input. As soon as I find what the problem is I'll let everyone know in case someone else experiences the same....Grandpa
