Title: Sprocket nut length
Post by: HILLSIDECYCLE.COM on June 13, 2012, 06:59:35 AM
Just a little tip, in regards to sprocket nut length.
We see quite often, that we establishing a Timken bearing conversion, the nut needs to be shortened, on those equipped.
We machine .065" from the inner side.
FWIW, the nut is machined from 12L14 steel. (the L means that is a leaded, alloy, ie, VERY soft)

Is the machining required becuase of the nut bottoming out? Wouldn't a really soft nut like you describe actually stretch under the compensators action? That would cause the tension on the springs to lighten, only aggravating the bounce on the comp, right?  Just curious.  twinotter  :)

Bottoming out.
No stretch witnessed here, but just made mention of that material, as we thought that was odd to use that, there.
Probably outside vendor's drawing, stating "mild steel", "cold-rolled steel."
