What exhaust/pipes are on your CVO Breakout?
« on: April 15, 2013, 01:29:35 PM »

I'm ready to buy and I can't really get straight answers!  I really want the Short Shots Staggered, but V&H says that they won't fit....I'm waiting for the Big Radius 2-into2s but they keep getting pushed back.  Rinehart has nothing, Samson says they "might" fit, Bassani is the only company that has a definite answer.  I think if I ask here, I can get some definitive answers....

So....can you list the brand and model of exhaust you have along with anything special you needed to do, like 02 adapters.  Thanks guys!  Whats left of my tax return is really burning a hole in my pocket.

Hey Nicky,

I know you know my story, but I like telling it   ;D

V/H Big Radius 2-2 for 2012-2013 Softail.

Had them on for 1500 miles, fit perfect, no special considerations, sits further away from the oil lines than the stock exhaust, does not interfere with the forward controls, does not exit too close to the rear cylinder head, or any of the other stupid BS V/H support personnel is telling everyone.

They popped right into place just like.....well.....like they were made for a 2012-2013 Softail !

Several of us have the 2-2 now and have put some serious miles on them and they are perfect.

What is supposedly different about a Breakout versus other Softails when it comes to fitting an exhaust system?  The frame is the same, the engine is still a Twin Cam with the heads and ports in the same ol' place, the trans is the same, etc..  Have any of those pipe companies actually told you why their stuff won't fit, or is it just "they won't fit" because the Breakout isn't listed in their database yet?  Something about this makes no sense, but it wouldn't be the first time a company said something won't work even though it does.  Harley does it all the time in their parts catalogs, claiming certain items won't work on a CVO for instance when in fact it works and fits just fine.

I would assume the only real difference would be model years, with the difference in O2 sensor size and location.  :nixweiss:

well, the items I mentioned in my post are exactly, word for word, the reasons I was given from V/H technical support, on 3 different calls, as to why the current spec would not fit....I've never seen a company try so hard to turn away potential customers....

After a couple of folks had the V/H 2-2 installed, I took the plunge....it's not rocket science...they fit, end of story.

This is the email I got from Rinehart about the availability of the Cross Back exhaust:  "No we having nothing for a breakout cause of the larger rear tire they are working on it and it should be later this year. Thank you"

I feel your pain....  I contacted D&D back in October 2012 regarding an exhaust for the CVO Breakout, & they sent me email with a link to their website.  The link was for the Low Cat 2:1 Exhaust System, & it specifically stated that it would fit the 2013 Breakout.  I purchased the exhaust system in November 2012 because my bike was supposed to be here in December, but it did not arrive until March 28, 2013.

Now when I was installing the system, I had taken it on & off the bike approximately (4x) because I was not satisfied with the clearances between the pipes & the oil lines.  I eventually installed 5/16" spacers between the mounting bracket & the frame..... therefore moving the pipes away from the lines. I now have approx. 7/16" - 1/2" between the vent line & the heat shield/ pipe.

After making the system fit correctly with the spacers, I learned that D&D has since changed the application stating that it will NOT work on the Breakout because the oil vent line touches the rear heat shield/ pipe.  I contacted D&D, sent them photos of my spacing, and have sinced been informed by them that they have received correspondence from multiple mechanics that have done similar modifications to the spacers to get the exhaust to fit on the Breakout.  ***** If I were you..... I would wait for them to make the correct application *******

Big Radius 2 into 1 for 2013 softail.  Fits perfect but not recommended by V/H.  Bungs are 12mm, so no adapters and are in the exact same location as stock.   I can't figure out what there problem is.  TTS Mastertuner, dynoed 94.7 and 115.7

cowboy with the 2-1.....love it....I want the 2-1 AND the 2-2.....without a doubt the most radical, best looking 2-1 I have ever seen.  With most all other 2-1's you sacrifice looks for performance, IMO....but not with this.  V/H did a really fantastic job....

Went with the Vance and Hines 2:1 Big Radius.  It's a little quieter than most but according to V&H, it supplies the most torque.

Is that for the Rocker, or the 2012-2013 model?

Nicky,

You want the one for the 2013 Softail (which has 12mm bungs), unless you want to go with the Power Vision Pro Tuner with 18mm wide band sensors, then the one for the Rocker would be correct.

Here's a pic of the Bassani Road Rage 2-1 if anybody is considering these. Still one small issue with the heat shield but they are working on it. Look closely where the two pipes go into the heat shield. There are two clips underneath but they only slide into the top pipe. Small gap between heat shield and bottom pipe. Causing a larger gap in the back where the heat shield should meet up with the tailpipe.

Rush indicated their 25301 series would fit, which is for almost all the Softails.  I'm installing some this weekend.

I have the same pipes on mine, I actually cut the rear pipe to be the same length as the bottom at the collector. there is still a gap at the muffler. that being said, Bassani claims it is supposed to have a gap. both clips now catch under the front heat shields. please let me know if they come up with one that fits better.

cutting the pipe took about 10 minutes with the Dremmel tool. removed about 1/2 inch. as both pipes then fit into the collector it does not really change the length of the pipes as the bottom pipe limits the amount the muffler slides on. it lines up much better on the mounting bracket as an added benefit.

I'm thinking about moving the top clip on the heat shield back about a 1/4" so it will slide forward. Probably have somebody with some welding skills do it for me.

take off the front heat shields and cut one of the head pipes to make both even. then the shield will fit. about 10 minutes work with a Dremmel tool. if you weld you will need to get the heat shield re-chromed and that will cost you. the fix I did solves the issues and other than a little time it's free.

Haven't gone with the cutting yet. I did loosen front heat shields and pushed the rear one forward and the front heat shield I pushed back. Was able to close the gap considerably about 1/8" difference. The collector heat shield now goes past the front heat shield about 1/8". Its secure so that isn't really an issue. Still have a huge gap in the rear. Probably going to end up cutting just to be done with this, just really annoying.

the gap in the rear will stay even if you cut. I don't like it either but Bassani says it was designed that way. It looks like you are done. Unless Bassani makes a shield that fits better.

Also went with the Bassani 2/1. They are making them for the breakout specifically now so no need to modify anything. I rode it home today in the rain but will post pics soon. If anyone is considering these I will post a video so you can see the looks with the sound. I couldn't find too much on these so I am willing to help. They sound great.

Updated, cleaned her up a bit.

I have V & H slash cut  slip-ons  on at the moment but looking to change to the V&H BR 2 into 1 and a power vision tuner  at the 5000 mile service, unless anybody out there knows if there are any more new pipes out there that are worth considering  :pepper: :bananarock: :orange:

Vance & Hines Big Shot, I called V&H back in June and was told they would not fit the Breakout. They went right on with no issues at all.

Has anyone fitted Bassani Sweepers to their CVO Breakout? I want to get them (in chrome) for my CVO Breakout when it arrives in April. I think they have a bit of an visual edge on the V&H Big Radius 2 into 2. I've been told the V&H BR 2 into 2 aren't great from a performance point of view. I wonder how the Sweepers perform?

I had V+H  BR 2 into 2 on my CVO Springer. It was much too loud and made lots of noise ,but no extra power. I then purchased a 10 CVO Conv and put Bassani pipes on it and the bike made 8 more HP and 3 pounds more of torque. I was told that with a proper dynotune, I could increase the torque numbers as well. Plus, the Bassani's were a lot better sounding and quieter at the same time. Defintely go with Bassani if you like the way that they look.

You know, I have a set of those pipes hanging on the wall in my garage.  My 09 CVO Softail Springer have the V & H BR 2-2 on there now, but I'm just not feeling them.  Your picture makes me think I should test fit the BSS pipes and see what I think....

Looks great.

I still have the Bassani RR 2-1 on mine and went with the SERT. However, I picked my Street Glide up last week after having head and tail pipes replaced (left the stock crossover on there) and went with the Thundermax instead of the SERT. Love the Thundermax! Definitely putting one on my Breakout. Once you load the map it learns how you ride. You can change engine components or change your pipes five times and never have to reload the map. Auto adjusts to whatever you do.

Went with the PV tuner. runs good and dyno at 95/112. Might add the Wide band 02 and the auto tune module later when I do some engine work.

Cuzco, did all of the mounting brackets line up?  I called them also and they stated that the mounting brackets may not line up and the pipes may not fit correctly.  Did you have any problems?  Also, what programmer did you use?

Thanks,

Joe

They whent right on. All brackets fit just fine. As I recall one might have been a little hard to get tightened. I didn't reprogram at all. It sounds fine, no poping at all.

Bassani pro streets. Sound great and went on EASY. Off to the tuner. Appreciate maps or tuning suggestions. No other mods at this point. Probably going with race tuner.

My 2014 CVO came in a few weeks ago, I bought the V&H Big Radius 2 into 2 . I really like the looks of those pipes and it was a tough decision from all the great looking pipes pictured in this thread but in the end you gotta pick a set and go with it.

Lennij, i have the same color CVO coming in March. Same pipes ordered too. Do you have a clearer photo for a better peek? How about a dyno run? Do you know what the increase in HP and TQ was with these pipes?

Freedom Performance Declaration Turnouts on my " new to me " CVO Breakout here in Western Australia

I'm presuming these "Perform " well enough , I only bought the bike today !

They are for sure loud !!

Does anyone else have these fitted to their CVO Breakout(s) ?

If so any news would be appreciated

The Bassani turnouts look similar. You can get quite baffles for you pipes if too loud. They look great! Good luck with your new bike.
