For many Memorial Day will be just another holiday from work, cooking outside with some friends, enjoying an adult beverage or two and bitching about the inconvenience of the day. I have certainly been guilty of that position in my lifetime but this would be another year away from that former position.
I reminded myself of the purpose behind this day and what it means to me. I like many of you, have had loved ones give their lives to service in one form or another. I am eternally grateful for this sacrifice and blessed as a result of it.
Recently I conducted a conversation with a POW of the Vietnam War and this was not the first time we conversed about his experience. However it was the first time I had heard very inmate details of what I would never forgot.
This got me to thinking of an event I had attended before many moons ago. Rolling Thunder®. After a brief thought I made the commitment to return to this event for Memorial Day. I am confident this will be a befitting action on such a day.

Now I must tell you that with all this discussion regarding boarders I am uncertain what all the fuss is about. Besides the dogs being better than bikes I am not certain I understand.

Having made the commitment I decided to make another commitment. Along my journey I would reach out to one of the Maggie Valley Krewe spydglide. It has been a while since I had laid eyeballs on him and missed our gatherings together. He agreed to meet me and we reminisced about a number of events. Laughed so hard I got a headache.
During our time together I informed him of the primary purpose of my journey. He reminded me that he too was a veteran and shared his experience. I am so thankful for folks like him and he is now added to the list of folks I am riding for this year.
Thanks for the time spyder and I trust you will consider returning to the Valley this year!

The National Museum of the Marine Corps is a lasting tribute to U.S. Marines--past, present, and future. Situated on a 135-acre site adjacent to Marine Corps Base Quantico, Virginia, and under the command of Marine Corps University, the Museum's soaring design evokes the image of the flag-raisers of Iwo Jima and beckons visitors to this 120,000-square-foot structure.

The Smithsonian’s Arts & Industries Building is the second oldest Smithsonian building. It was constructed between 1879 and 1881 to meet the need for more exhibition space.
Wait a minute! Did I just read that correctly? Three years to construct in the 1800’s! #e!! we cannot build anything in three years if the government is involved now-a-days and we have far more technology and labor available. WTH!

The Washington Monument was built between 1848 and 1884 as a tribute to George Washington's military leadership from 1775-1783 during the American Revolution. Its construction took place in two major phases, 1848-56, and 1876-84--a lack of funds, political turmoil, and uncertainty about the survival of the American Union caused the intermittent hiatus.

The site on the National Mall opened in September 2004. Fifteen years in the making, it is the first national museum in the country dedicated exclusively to Native Americans. The five-story, 250,000-square-foot, curvilinear building is clad in a golden-colored Kasota limestone designed to evoke natural rock formations shaped by wind and water over thousands of years.

Thanks a bunch Jock, for posting your visit to the National Museum for the Marine Corps. I didn't even know there was such a thing.
Having served in the Marine Corps in the early 70s (Aviation).....I could relate to a lot of what you posted there. Like my first haircut.....when the barber says "how would you like it cut?" and you've already got a butch haircut two days earlier and reply "just trim it up around the ears". :P Yea, right! Those barbers only know one kind of haircut and that's why it only takes them 15 seconds. :huepfenlol2:
Marine Corps....Semper Fi.....Always the first in and the last out! :2vrolijk_21:

"Tear down this wall!" is a line from a speech made by Ronald Reagan in West Berlin on June 12, 1987, calling for the leader Mikhail Gorbachev, to open up the barrier which had divided West and East Berlin since 1961.
Meanwhile back in the United States Donald Trump stated, “We will build that wall!”

Installed in 1976 in time for the nave’s completion and dedication, the “Creation” window starts in the middle, where pieces of white glass send thousands of rays of light radiating outward as the petals of a rose. Designed by Cathedral master artisan Rowan LeCompte and fabricated by Dieter Goldkuhle, the 26-foot window celebrates the majesty and mystery of creation. The window includes every color LeCompte and Goldkuhle could summon, but key parts also represent the four Greek elements: red for fire; gray for air; green for water and brown for the earth.

The main memorial is in the form of a triangle intersecting a circle. Walls: 164 feet long, 8 inches thick; more than 100 tons of highly polished "Academy Black" granite from California: more than 2,500 photographic, archival images representing the land, sea, and air troops who supported those who fought in the war are sandblasted onto the wall.

You may be asking yourself what is the Mission Statement of Rolling Thunder® Inc.
Our Mission
The major function of Rolling Thunder®, Inc. is to publicize the POW-MIA issue: To educate the public that many American Prisoners of War were left behind after all previous wars and to help correct the past and to protect future Veterans from being left behind should they become Prisoners of War-Missing In Action. They are also committed to helping American Veterans from all wars.
Rolling Thunder®, Inc. is a non-profit organization and everyone donates his or her time because they believe in the POW/MIA Issue.

The Rolling Thunder®, Inc. Story
In the fall of 1987, Artie Muller and Ray Manzo, two Vietnam veterans met to discuss their personal concerns about the POW/MIA's from the Vietnam War. Having honorably served their country and having taken an oath to "support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies..." and to "bear true faith and allegiance to the same," they were deeply troubled by the abhorrent neglect of attention given to those who did not make it out with their lives or their freedom. These veterans discussed the more than 10,000 reported sightings of live Americans living in dismal captivity. Intelligence reports of these sightings were generally ignored by the government and mainstream press.
In 1987 Rolling Thunder® made their first ride to the Vietnam War Memorial.

The First Rolling Thunder®, Inc. Demonstration
The Founders of Rolling Thunder®, Inc., Artie Muller and Ray Manzo, were ordinary men who understood that they had a right to have their voices heard and proceeded to lay down the plans for a gathering in Washington, D.C. during the 1988 Memorial Day weekend. They reached out to their families, fellow veterans and veteran's advocates to unify and form a march and demonstration in the nation’s Capital. Their arrival would be announced by the roar of their motorcycles, a sound not unlike the 1965 bombing campaign against North Vietnam dubbed Operation Rolling Thunder. Hence, they would call themselves "Rolling Thunder®, Inc." a title that would endure time and be trademarked in 1990. Word spread quickly and by Memorial Day weekend in 1988, approximately 2,500 motorcycles from all over the country converged on Washington, D.C. to demand from our leaders a full accounting of all POW/MIA's. As the Founders of Rolling Thunder®, Inc. made their stand that day in front of the Capitol, they reflected thankfully for the people who came in support of the POW/ MIA's and for the unity that was felt. This was the first Rolling Thunder®, Inc. demonstration. Only until ALL POW/MIA's ARE ACCOUNTED FOR, it will not be their last. On that day, the foundation was laid for the annual "Ride for Freedom" to the Vietnam Veteran's Memorial Wall (also referred to as the "Ride to the Wall"). The number of participants/spectators in the Memorial Day weekend Ride for Freedom has grown from 2,500 to an estimated 900,000.

The POW/MIA Memorial Flag Act of 2001 (S.1226)
This bill was signed into legislation by President George W. Bush in part due to Rolling Thunder®, Inc. lobbying efforts. The main force behind this bill was Senator Campbell and Congressman Dan Burton. Rolling Thunder, Inc. was highly instrumental in passing legislation to ensure that the POW/MIA flag will fly below the American Flag any day the American flag is flown in Washington, D.C. at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, the Korean Memorial and the WWII Memorial.

The first bike rolled out promptly at 12 noon! I was approximately in the middle of the field of bikes. My wheels started rolling at approximately 1:30pm. The released two rows at a time with a fairly tight pack. I suspect the final bikes departed around 2:20pm.
The ride takes you from the Pentagon Parking Lot across the Arlington Memorial Bridge. From there you circle the entire National Mall with the streets blocked off!
This is an unbelievable experience!

In summary this will be a Memorial Day that I will cherish for a lifetime. I had the opportunity to be surrounded by the Best of the Best. Men and Women who have sacrificed, protected, served, provided and performed the hard work. I will not forgot the stories of their life experiences.
They came from all around the world, all walks of life, race, color, branch of service with no sense of entitlement. Their code is to be admired, respected and duplicated.
I was truly blessed to have this opportunity and thanked each one of them for their service.
GOD BLESS OUR VETERANS

Your photos are always awesome. Some are inspiring, some are the comic relief I need at work and some I'm like, um ok... These were all of the above!

Thanks for the great story and pictures Jock. I rode from San Diego to this year's event. You are right. It is truly an experience of a lifetime!

Awesome thread. I was down there this year for the first year. I didn't get to see nearly as much.
