Title: Plugging Zumo 550 into cigarette lighter
Post by: Harlee-Htown on November 06, 2009, 09:14:44 AM
I really do not want to leave the GPS cradle and associated hardware on the bike permanently.  I do not do a lot of long cross country road trips, but when I enjoy using the Zumo.  My question is, is there any harm using the Zumo plugged into fairing cigarette lighter for extended periods of time? (like all day)

Thanks in advance for your help!

I've been riding with my Zumo 550 plugged into the cigarette lighter for the past couple of years. Never had any problems. The Zumo battery stays charged up while plugged in. Each time you turn the ignition off, Zumo screen pops up asking if you want to run on Zumo battery power or Zumo will shut down in 'XX' seconds. Then you can just remove the device and power cord for security or to move it to your other bikes. Very easy.

I thought and thought about this for you. The short answer is .....no worries go for it. The only real downside i can think of is you will need to carry your lighter in your pocket for when ya' wanna' smoke.  :bananarock:

Seriously though, if you don't smoke then maybe purchase an actual power point to replace the lighter socket with. It has a sweet little flap cover for when the socket is not in use.

Suplimental Power Point 91843-97

check that the charger does not contact the left front of the tank when the forks are turned hard left, my cell phone charger was crushed and a small nick was put in the paint when i pulled away from a fuel stop.

Been using this setup ever since I've had my Zumo w/o any problems. Either one of the following two will be good for power plug if you want to use your cigarette lighter.

12V Flush Mount Receptacles & Plugs (http://www.westmarine.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?resultCt=1&jspStoreDir=wm51&catalogId=10001&productId=233816&keyword=6867899+&y=16&x=8&storeId=10001&ddkey=SiteSearch) (Plug Only)

Sealink 12V Receptacles, Plugs, and Both (http://www.westmarine.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product/10001/-1/10001/30763/10001/316/124/9) (Plug Only)

You will need to use the same size (amp) fuse in these plugs that is stock in the Zumo wiring harness.

Hey Guys,

Thanks for the reply.  Now, one more question.  If you use the charger plugged into the lighter don't you also have to use the car mount?  My worry is that although it fits onto the handlebar bracket, the car mount does not have the security screw on top that the motorcycle mount does.

What am I missing? Or will the car mount work with the vibrations without the security screw?

Thanks in advance, again!

You should use the mount for the motorcycle, but you will need to get one of the plugs I mentioned in my previous post. You will have to cut the wires to length to reach your lighter and insert the same size (amp) fuse in the plug you purchase. The car mount is not water proof so you don't want to use that on the bike.
