GP Designs Bearing Support Install
« on: February 11, 2007, 12:29:06 AM »

I took advantage of some down time today and decided to get my GP support installed. Thought I'd share a few thoughts on the install.

First pic is a before shot.........

The manual tells you to check the runout but does not tell you that you'll need to have a 7/8" fine thread nut and a couple of 7/8" washers. (quick trip to the hardware store cause I could not find one from a previuos install). You need to thread the nut onto the crank so you can turn the engine around to check it.

Next a shot checking the crank runout. GP states that normal is .001" - .005" Anything more that .015" and you have problems. Mine was at .0035".

Next a shot of the complete support installed. Also put in the HD auto tensioner since I was in there.

Thanks for another informative and detailed report.  What are your plans for the original black 1.4Kw starter?

Jim...thanks for the pic of this...the instruction sheet does not show this very well, and this helps me understand that what I'm checking here is basically "wobble"....correct?

I don't have a damn dial indicator though >:(

The instructions also say the comp nut is no longer needed, but I'm assuming you still torque that assembly down per usual?

Jim.....How much time for the total job?

I did not keep track of time on this one since it was my own. I also had to change out the shifter shaft seal in the tranny and the starter drive seal in the primary as they had a slight leak. The whole job should not take more than 2.5 - 3.5 hours though. (depending on what exhaust you have)

You are checking to see that the crank is running true. You can pick up a dial indicator at Harbor Freight for about $30 on sale. The comp nut is still used and yes it is torqued down as usual. What is no longer used is the compansator itself.

I took advantage of some down time today and decided to get my GP support installed. Thought I'd share a few thoughts on the install.

Have you noticed any vibration after the install? Just curious. My buddy had the dealership install the bearing support on his SEUC when he bought the bike.

He had a very, very annoying vibration at certain rpm's. (Due the the compensator being removed.) He eventually removed the gp bearing support and the vibration went away.

He's now looking to sell it, there's only about 200 miles on it.

I asked GP  as well as Ron @ RC (the designer) about vibrations with these some time ago. They both stated that the only ones that had a problem were bikes that the crank runout was excessive or there was some other misalignment in the drive train. I have not been out on mine yet due to wet weather.

I am relatively confident that I'll be shopping for one in the future after I get my 120" back from Zippers. However it's a 2007 and I think that the design changed.

Mark, mine has been on a couple thousand miles now.  No vibration issues with it.  Some minor difference you feel before and after.  But nothing that is any kind of issue at all.

We put one on Kathy's Street Glide when we did the 95" kit. 12000 miles and if there was the slightest vibration it would be out of there. That woman can hear and feel everything. Which is a good thing :2vrolijk_21:

I rode the bike and I could feel the slight vibration every now and then at certain rpm's. At 60-65mph it was non stop slight buzzing.

I told him something's not right and to check into it further to see if something else was the cause of the problem. But he had the dealership remove it and now he's happy.
