2018 Sticker Glide
« on: September 20, 2017, 01:20:01 PM »

Has anyone that has purchased or that is planning on purchasing the new 2018 CVO Street Glide thought about removing any of the decals/stickers from the paint scheme on the orange or gray with the black denim lower & accent trim?
I have ordered the Lava Orange w/ Black Denim and I'm contemplating removal of the stickers on the front of the fairing, top of the tank and rear fender and leaving the rest. I think that they cheapen the look of the bike (IMO) but I'm ok with the rest and really like the orange and black combo. It appears to me that the Denim Black on the bottom of the tank, lower fairings, ignition switch housing and the part under the fairing that covers the top of the fork tubes (can't remember what that piece is called) are painted and the rest of the denim is stickers.
If anyone has any first or even second hand information on this subject I would be interested in hearing from you.

Thanks,

I could be wrong of course, but if you're assuming the denim is just an applique stuck on top of the paint I think your assumption is wrong.  Either that or Harley has found a way to further cheapen the paint jobs you're paying thousands extra for on a CVO.  I wouldn't try peeling it.

Leave it to Harley to bring back a stupid and stupid looking bike show fad like flat paint.  Kind of reminds me how they brought out fat rear tires a decade after they had come and gone on the show circuit and on custom bikes.  They are always years behind the trends.  Now they've even jumped on the oversize front rim fad.  They still think "style" is an acceptable substitute for just making a high quality and reliable motorcycle.

also, contrary to popular belief, there is a clear coat on the denim paints.  so even if it were a sticker, it would still be covered by clear.

I believe Rayson 56 is right-----------I have seen the dark alloy and black denim up close and personal and I believe the black denim on the lower part of the saddle bags is somewhat like a decal/wrap type application. Don't remember about the front of the bike .

The black denim is not a sticker, decal or what ever.  It does feel like it might be.  However, the bike has to be painted, then clear coated.  That is then polish before the denim paint is applied, and the denim clear is applied.  This is why you feel it and leads people to believe it is a decal.  The actual paint process was explained at the dealer show.

Also if you talk to custom painters who have painted bikes that are both gloss paint and denim paint on the same panel, you will find the same ridge.

The reason there is an edge is because the denim is put on top of the main paint. It is definitely not a decal.

Thanks guys. I was hoping that at least those 3 parts were decals and if they were they were coming off. But if it is paint then I guess it's NOT so cheap.  :nixweiss:

I was at my local dealer today and I could have sworn it was a "wrap" type decal on the CVO SG.  My local HD sales guys are saying it is as well.  They may be wrong (wouldn't surprise me), but irregardless - IMHO it looks like crap and really makes the bike look cheap.

On the other hand I saw a Black Fade CVO Ultra.  Wow.... I'm a RG owner and boy if they had a CVO RG Ultra in that color, I'd be lining up for one of them!

According to my painter The badging and graphics on previous denim paints have been a type of silk screening process. They are not decals. I'm not sure on the new bikes but would guess they are the same process previously used on other denim bikes.

I'm sorry guys but I've been reading this thread and have a question to Ray.  Why would you want to do this or even attempt to do this on a $40K plus motorcycle?  I'm not trying to be smart here but why spend that kind of money for a paint scheme you don't like?  I don't like stickers or cheap stuck-on reflectors either but the paint should be something that draws you in to purchase and enjoy.  Spend it on a color you do like and ride on... ;D

A big part of the justification for the outlandish prices of CVO's has always been the "special" paint and graphics.  Why pay that premium and then change the paint and graphics?

And yes, the more I look at photo's of those bikes, especially the rear view of the bags, the more it looks like a cheap decal or wrap.  Whether it is or not, it still looks more like JC Whitney and not a classy paint job.

I spoke with customer service at HD and the answer that was given to me about the paint scheme, after 2 days of digging (she said) was that it IS a silk screening process. You and your painter seem to be right on the money HD Dude!
Thanks for all of your inputs and opinions folks.

It looks like I've got a decision to make. I'm super ready for an upgrade and love almost everything about the new SG. I've been watching with great anticipation to see the offerings from the MOCO for the last few years. I also have an offer on my current bike that I definitely should not pass on. A fairly  local dealer is offering me a very good deal (especially compared to the other dealers) on a new CVO in my color choice.
