Another box of rocks.
« on: June 05, 2018, 01:37:20 PM »

So....
Just bought a 2012 cvo softail. Only 10,000 miles.
When engine is cold it sounds good nice and quiet, take off and ride for twenty minutes or so and it gets noisy .
Is quiet at idle but take off in first up thru 2nd and third or so up to about 2500 rpm it has a rattle or knock.
It tones down some up in the rpm range.
In neutral I can rev it and no noise...
Almost sick to my stomach that I may be going into the motor already.
I have new lifters and rocker lockers on the way.
Am I looking at possible piston slap or worse?

Most definitely.   Already planned to upgrade that.

Piston slap usually happens when cold.  I wouldn't be concerned with that.

Might also want to upgrade the inner camshaft bearings.

Compensator is where I'd put my bet.

Lifters get the blame as do the valve springs. Truth be told the cam has very fast ramps. The springs have a harmonic right there and this causes lash, loft. Hard as heck on the roller bearings on any lifter. With a cam change it gets quiet with most. Still hard on lifters but not as bad. Lower spring pressure helps, not beehives, they have more pressure on the seat than stock. Some of the cams have a lot more sensible ramps.

I'm gonna do the lifters, cam bearings, and rocker lockers.
Then go from there.
The compensator has some wear on the ramps. More polished than chewed up.   Was a little bit of metal on the drain plug .  Dealer had syn3 in all 3 holes. Put regular formula plus back in. And 75w90 in the trans.

Sounds like the classic signs of my previous compensator issues, getting worse when hot, etc. My noise however was the worst when sitting at idle, and you said yours was quiet at idle.

I took a trip last month to Eureka Springs with 5 other bikes. Of the 6 bikes, 3 had rattling compensators. Pretty sad.

Well    pulled the lifter and cams.   Slight wear on the rear intake lobe and lifter roller.
Checked crank runout on pinion.

Installed s&s standard lifters, b168 bearings, rocker lockers.
Engine is noticeably quieter.
Plan to upgrade the compensator later.   Just gonna ride and put some miles on it.
