Water pump redesign?
« on: August 12, 2018, 10:21:20 AM »

Since the twin cooled motors came out there have been quite a few instances of water pump failure.  I know several folks who have had failures and a buddy riding with me just last month had his fail.

Just checking my parts book and online parts books and learned that the 17s & 18s have a different pump part number (26600048) from the earlier models (26600012).  Just wondering (and hoping) if perhaps the moco has addressed the premature failure issues and this is a more robust pump.

Anyone know of failures on 17s or 18s?

The 2016 water pump was for the twin cam motors. Thereafter, for the Milwaukee 8.

Thanks Greg.  Understand but still wondering if the new / different pump still has significant failure rate.  It would be nice if it did not.

It is a totally different looking design, but so is the rest of the system.  I haven't seen any reports of early failures on the M8 bikes, for what that's worth.  I guess time will tell if it's actually a more robust and reliable system.  If if turns out to be more reliable, it still wouldn't help the Twin Cam guys unfortunately.

Hopefully they've gotten better than the magnetic coupling that was such a weak link.

So once again the consumer has to pay to fix the updated repair item for Harley, amazing.

Nothing changes at the MoCo.  Let's face it, the customers have tolerated this kind of treatment for decades.  Think about all the SE compensators people had to buy out of pocket during the first several years of the new style primary and Cruise Drive trans, because Harley designed and installed a woefully inadequate compensator stock, refused to fix the bad design, but was more than happy to put out a SE version designed to actually handle the torque loading people could buy and have installed at their own expense.  There are many examples, and this water pump deal is just more of the same.  There is a reason I haven't bought another new Harley since 2005, and these sorts of things are a big part of my decision.  I don't like giving my money to companies who repeatedly put out inferior product and then expect customers to either fix the defects themselves or have to take them to court to get justice.

Don't forget about the auto cam chain tensioner that was too tight...which would cause the tensioner shoe to come apart.  The MoCo's fix was to come out with a $500 SE replacement, that took about $500 worth of labor to install.  So, for a cool grand you could fix that mistake too.  I'm really at a loss to explain why HD isn't in deeper trouble than they are.  When the last of the boomers are done with riding, the MoCo will be in dire straits.

I just did the steel toed tour at York and even though I really enjoyed that I honestly don't know why we keep putting up with all the BS that HD keeps dishing out, I really don't.
I've been gliding around a bit on the Indian Forums and actually test rode a Roadmaster and it rode smooth, just the heat from the engine but they have addressed that in the 2019 models and I'm seriously thinking of getting one.
I'll say though it's a damn shame what we have to put up with anymore to try and relax and enjoy the weekends, I just wish HD would get there head out of the azz and fix this crap.
