M8 Heads kick ass
« on: September 29, 2018, 07:43:35 PM »

I'm playing with some M8 take-offs while I'm here at Reher Morrison's shop.

I gotta say. I'm very impressed with what these are capable of. They have ALLOT of potential, ALLOT!!!
In stock form, they flow more than enough for the relatively small displacement motors they come on.

But for larger motors, these things have some enormous potential. I got the Intake port well into the 350s
without touching the valves or seats, (that's tomorrow's lesson).

I put a chart on my FaceBook page, (MCE Performance) of the initial go at the intake port. No seat work was
done up to this point. I expect some even better results after I fix Harley's chitty valve job. LOL

Keep your dick in a vice!

Here's a link to the preliminary flow results (in case you don't have FB)

Final M8 Intake port 375 CFM. Stock valves.

Dark green - stock
Red & Lime - some port work
Black - Valve job and a little more work on the port.

The port's cross sectional area was NOT increased at all. The velocity is maintained but it was more
balanced (top to bottom) afterward.

I'm very optimistic about the potential HP of these. The only cause for concern is weather the rest of
the motor can hold up to the RPM they're capable of producing. Only time will tell.

The chart in the next post below by "Unbalanced" shows the before, during and after results of my tests.

Thank-you Unbalanced for getting it posted.

Matt,

Without knowing what you tried or the message you received after trying it’s impossible to tell you what you did wrong.   You might try linking pictures from your website vs sizing pictures to work here.  My guess would be your pictures are too large to be posted and need to be sized to fit the sites requirements.

Here's a vid of me testing one of these M8 heads. (This one did 379 with stock valves!)
My first YouTube video. It's only 50 seconds but ya gotta start somewhere. lol

Whats going on with the exh port research, thought that was deemed overly restrictive ?

I don't think it is. But I haven't gotten to that part yet. We'll see...

Flow benches are practically useless when it comes to designing EX ports.
They will flat out lie to you, and you'll end up making changes that will destroy
power.

I don't concentrate on CFM numbers when it comes to an EX port.
Velocity and efficiency is what I look for. Those percentage "rules" you hear
bandied about are a bunch of hogwash.

Case in point: We worked on a set of V8 heads recently. We added a larger EX valve
(which picked up the flow considerably) and the engine lost 60hp on the dyno. (That
was the only change). You cannot simulate the pressures and temperature of EX gases
on a flowbench.

have you flow tested a set of screamin eagle ported and polished m8 heads yet.

No, (I have not gotten my hands on them up to this point). I would welcome the opportunity
however.
