Was giving some thought to the wobble
« on: August 29, 2008, 04:15:06 PM »

Well here it goes. :nervous:
I am well aware of the many threads about bagger wobble and the braces that (fix) it.
Since I feel it almost every time I ride, I have been giving some thought to root cause.
Seems to be from slight wheel movement causing over and under steer problems. IMHO
YES, I am sure you all already know this, no new stuff here.
But what I was thinking is this.
If the rear swing arm is moving in the rubber bushings, why could we not put in polly bushings.
They have no flex to them, hard and  firm.
We use them in race cars all the time with great results.
I seems to me this would fix the root cause of the problem instead of putting on a brace that puts stress on sections of the bike that where not made for lateral stress.
Not trying to be a smart ass, just looking for some positive input. Maybe I am way off base with my conclusions.  If so let me know. :2vrolijk_21:
Has this been brought up before, if so, what are your thoughts,  guys and gals.

One more thing, and this really bugs me.
My 07 ultra never gave me this experience, not once that I can remember,   :confused5: :confused5: :confused5: :confused5: :confused5: :confused5:, same frame, same bushings, bike weighs almost the same.    WTF ::)
Any and all input would be helpful, and thanks again everyone.

There are a number of different options to replace those bushings, some are solid.

I believe Sta-bo has some of the bushings you mention, and if memory serves me right somebody tried them with vibrations as an end result. :nixweiss:

Here is a really good thread to read concerning what you are speaking of - FLH Swingarm 101 and Rear Steer. In Reply #53 it was decided by the user that they were not the end all cure on his bike and he took them out. :nixweiss:

Ernie, is the Glide Pro kit only a bushing replacement or a completely different cross shaft and bushing assembly?

It is a new swingarm axle and inserts that go into the stock bushings. I have installed a few of these, including Ernie's, and like the results of the kit. One thing I do not like about the Glide-Pro kit is that you cannot use the vehicle alignment jigs on the axle. It is machined differently on the ends and will not allow the tool to center the axle.

Thanks Jim.  Had heard them mentioned before but never saw the hardware in hand.  Appreciate knowing more what it is and what it's not.

I will be checking into both kits, seems like the pro kit is a more complete change over.
not sure yet, thanks so much for all input thus far.
i really want a way to fix wobble with out stabilizer kit.
also woundering if better shocks would help, seems like they should.
i am pretty heavy (fat) ::)  330 plus, so even with out a passenger the bike is loaded.

In my opinion the FIRST thing to do before adding any aftermarket add on is the alignment of bike. The swing arm bearings and steering head bearings are the next culprits to causing instability with the bike.

One more thing, and this really bugs me.
My 07 ultra never gave me this experience, not once that I can remember,   :confused5: :confused5: :confused5: :confused5: :confused5: :confused5:, same frame, same bushings, bike weighs almost the same.    WTF ::)

It did it a little on my  04 SEEG before my accident.  They change out my frame, along with all the paint and a few other parts, and put it all back together by hand and now I don't have any wobble, rear steer or whatever you want to call it.  Not at any speed, not on any road.  Jim, Ernie and I think Andy have all rode my bike and experienced it.

My 02 Ultra Classic didn't have it, either, but my 89 Ultra Classic had it a little.  I've rode other guys baggers over the years.......some have it and some don't.

But in the case of my SEEG I was really curious and have mentioned that to some.  The best guess is because it was assembled by hand with more exact alignment and measuring than on an assembly line. :nixweiss:

I think this points in the direction of what Jim is saying......totally align the bike, first.

What adjustments are there? in the swingarm?

bushings in the front wheel?  fork alignment?

Who does this kind of work?  dealer?  indie?  or specialty suspension guys?

Thanks

The adjustments are in the engine stabilizer links and the top between the heads or at the front of the front head (depending on year) and at the front engine mount. The adjustments are made by mounting alignment fixtures to the frame at the swingarm pivots. These fixtures lock the swingarm (and drivetrain) perfectly parallel within' the frame.

There are no adjustments in / on the front wheel and there are no fork alignment adjustments. The only front end adjustments are the head bearing fall-away.

Any dealership should have the tools, Indy's may (I do) but they are expensive (about $700)

so i should go to the shop and ask to have everything aligned .
hell, why not.
sounds possible, only because like i said before, my 07 ultra NEVER wobbled,   NEVER.
and it had same bushings as present bike.
what exactly do i ask them, i will when i get 906 done this winter.
thanks for input.
