CAM SHOE LESSON
« on: September 29, 2005, 06:17:54 PM »

BRAD at freedom cycle gave our group a quick lesson on the cam shoe tensioner wear issue. for those that dont know these are wear items that need to be replaced at 25000 miles. you can also switch to gear drive and eliminate these altogether. if you push it and they fail you will be stranded. also as they begin to fail small pieces begin to break off and enter into the oil pump which has no screen. so be aware- ill be changing mine when the time comes-ride safe!  [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif]

I've got over 33,000miles on mine with no problems.  That said, I did inquire from my head Tech at the Dealership if they should be checked as I'd heard that with 30K miles some were coming apart.  He said 'where'd you hear that?' and for me not to worry that they would go much farther than that.  The MoCo doesn't seem to have any concern, so I wonder who's right?  Wish we had a inside hook up to someone at the MoCo that could give us the straight skinny on this issue.  Is it a isolated failure early on or something that happens with some regularity that would warrent the expense of checking often or changing to the gear drive?     [smiley=nixweiss.gif] I'm confused fur sure.   [smiley=nervous.gif] spyder

Don't rely on the mileage meter to tell you - set on my Fatboy were in need of replacement at 15k miles.

I open up the oil filters and look for little brown chunks (of plastic-like stuff).

Twolane, when was the last mileage that you checked your filter and did you have any pieces in there then?  I'm going to check mine when I change it at 10,000 in the next week or so.  I feel like if you're seeing particles, you may have waited too long. [smiley=nixweiss.gif]

Willie, feel free to repost any lost photos.  Your photos weren't intentionally deleted by anyone here.  Earlier this year a hacker attacked this site.  During that incident all the photos posted to that time were lost.

I didn't read this whole thread ( no time ) but just got hme from a harley hop up class and the harley man said they are having problems with that shoe. That shoe is for the cam chain right.  PS The harley man was from the R&D dept. in Milwaukee.

Willie, make sure not to "preview" your post if you've got pictures attached.  Doing the preview will lose the attachments.  It won't tell you or warn you, it'll just kill them.

i think S & S  makes the gears themselves but you can use any gear drive cam. you have to use a gear drive cams because they counterotate. i also think that ANDREWS makes not only their cams but they manufacture most of the other cams sold under different names. any news on a 103 seeg cam?

Newbee on the site, but many hard miles otherwise so I thought I'd throw in my two cents here. On my 2001FLTRSEI, the cam tensioners were worn beyond limits at 15K and two jockeys I ride with have had them come apart at betwen 16K and 19K, these were on 2002 SERK's. In discussions with 3 different service mgrs, they basically confirm that there 'seems to be a materials problem' in the stock cam followers, but have no answers as to why they haven't been improved and of course $'s are the reason they aren't considered as a 'time change' item. I plan on having them at least inspected and probably replaced at 15K on my '03 SERK to be safe. Changing to gear driven voids any warranty on these items according to the service guys.

Well tore into the cam cover to lok at the shoes when I got back from Reno and Brad's little talk.  With right at 33,500 mile I you can just see where the chain is wearing into the shoe if I had to estimate I'd say about 1/8 of the way thru the shoe.  Put it back together and will ride it hard (with no worries) till the new bike arrive and will deal with it while upgrading the motor.

Hey Mr_Magoo, that's what I've been hearing on the mileage for the cam shoe........if you had to estimate maximum mileage before having to replace according to what you saw, what would it be?   I've got  about the same mileage on mine as you have on yours, but haven't looked at the shoes yet.  Was wanting to wait to look and change at the same time.  Whatcha think?    [smiley=nixweiss.gif]  spyder

Hey SpyG,
As I have indicated on a earlier post, mine were replaced at 52k, and the inner shoe was totally worn out. NO damage to the oil pump, and it is still running fine at 64,650. I used the S&S adj. PR so as not to have to remove the heads etc. I figured that at this point it is much easier to replace the tensioners than to install gear drive$. One note, you can't see the inner shoe, and this is the one that wears out first. I can't find the pics that I took, so I can't repost them, sorry  [smiley=nixweiss.gif]

O'fender, several have written previously in different threads here of cam shoe failure being handled as a warranty issue.  I don't remember reading of anyone complaining about not getting the replaced under warranty when they otherwise expected to.

The fact that my buddy had to have his cam chain shoes & a bearing ( don't know which one ) Replaced durring the York open house had me hearing all sorts of noises on the ride home so I decided to take my oil filter appart. ( not the most easy job I've tried !) Showed small particles of plastic trapped in the filter. Going to see what the stealership has to offer when it goes in for it's latest & final dose of replacement chrome.Hate to miss any decent days so am waiting till just before the warenty expires end of Nov.

My tensioners failed earlier this year and caused a lot of damage. Oil pump, lifters and cams were trashed. This all happened at 32,000 miles. It was the inside shoe that failed, the shoe on the outside of the cam plate did not look too bad. The extended warranty did cover all repairs

O.K. so what's the verdict?  How many miles on the bike since the cam change?

This is gear driven cams, right?  Where's the dyno sheet.

Dammit, you know the rules.......... [smiley=worthless.gif]

I don't think that Chip is a member of the site any longer....   He did have a custom grind put into his bike by Brad while in NV, he also had some headwork, the dyno was posted up a bit ago and should still be there.

I rode with Chip soon after his bike got back to the east coast down to the Rockingham AHDRA ...I don't know what his numbers are but his bike is certainly fast!
