6 Speed Tranny
« on: October 15, 2005, 08:07:13 PM »

Just ordered a gear set for the bike today dealer had 30% off, will have it install when the bike arrives.  How do you guys (those that have em) like the 6 speed so far.  I hear the make a little noise in 6th gear?

Simply put, it's great.  Don't hear any noise in 6th gear, 4th makes a bit of a racket but I think my '04 Ultra had a problem in 4th also.  I'm runnin stock pipes so if the noise was there to hear, I'd hear it.

I have one on the SEEG and was disappointed in the gas mileage and grade climbing under 3500 RPM.  After adding the High Output kit, I love it.  The HO kit brings the HP and Torque in sooner and the gear set doesn't lug the motor.  Of course at 85 MPH and 3500 and greater RPM on the original set up, the gear set was great.  But now it performs better at 75 MPH and greater.

Friday, went out with my business partner who has a 95 kit in his 2002 Ultra Classic...... We matched up at 75 MPH and 6th gear.  The SEEG took off like a bat and left him thinking he was standing still.  I slowed up cause it looked like he was about to put his kick stand down thinking he was parked. ;D

All and all, you will like it, and I think on most 4 lane (or greater) you will enjoy the ride.

Magoo, I don't have a lot of time on one.  But I'll share what little experience I've got.  On a couple of different bikes I've spent a day on a six speed.  One was a couple hundred miles and one was about 500.  Both made noise in high gear and 4th gear that I wasn't accumstomed to.  One was more pronounced than the other.  But the both did it.  The bike I spent the longer of the two rides on was noisy enough it really helped tire you out by the end of the day.

Both of these rides were cases where a buddy and I swapped off for a day of a longer trip going someplace.  So they weren't my bikes and I never spent any time seeing if the noise could be made better.  Both bikes had picked up their noise when they got their six speeds and it was obviously a gear noise.

These were both machines pretty early in HD's six speed availability though.  So while it might concern me until I heard one do better you have to hope that in that much time the OEM has figured out a way to cut the gears to quiet it down.

Thanks form what I've heard it the transmisson units not the gear set that are noisey. Maybe HD was a little sloopy in the set up of the units(whole tranny) and a dealers mechanic does a better job on a gear set?

I had a six speed gear set put in my previous ultra. Prior to the change the tranny did not have a sound in it. initially the six speed was quiet. But after a few hundred miles got noisey in sixth as well as fourth. I have told many people it was the biggest mistake I ever made on one of my bikes. It constantly drove me nuts.

PJ has a HD gear set + 3.37 gearing and I have experienced nothing but positive shifting and no noise to speak of (at least nothing that can be heard over Rineharts).  I'm also running a Barnett Scorpion clutch set up with the hydraulic clutch pressure plate.  Some have said the Barnett clutch is junk, but it hasn't failed yet running behind a fairly strong motor.  Go figure?  I've only got 2K miles and I'm starting to run it harder - hopefully an implosion is waiting around the corner for me - PJ

I have a HD 6 speed in my 2001 Road King Classic and have ridden 15k miles with it
Mixed feelings about it, noise is OK, scooter was geared differently in 2001, a HD carb vs EFI marketing thing, I have had problems with it jumping into gear from neutral and with neutral light on but being in gear, Jims was the designer and supplier to HD of the gear set, HD provided the shifter tower
I will not be getting the 6 speed for the 06 SE Ultra

Are you doing the whole tranny or just the gear set?  Let us know how it turns out.

Been thinking off and on about doing the gear set but hearing about noises and things I think I will just stick with the 5'r.

The DD6 is the way to go.
Any overdrive set up, (like the HD set up), will have noise in the overdrive gearset eventually. The only way around it is with a direct drive top cog.
