zippers cams
« on: March 21, 2006, 04:53:31 PM »

How much should it cost me to have them installed? how many Hours labor...
And which option, gear or chain makes the most sence with only doing the cams?

 I'd go gear driven. [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif]

Book says 4.6 hours labor for cam swap.

Also plan on a hour or two dyno time.

So labor total should come in around 6-7 hours or between $425-$525 depending upon the shop.

Typically its 3 to 4 hours labor for the cam swap depending on who does it.

Thanks for the info...- And the dyno was my next thought. I have a tune right now that I am pleased with, I would love to see a Dyno sheet on these new cams before putting them in but I have an appointment to have the bike picked up on monday for my fender replacement and I really want to get this done for the season.. I guess I would really like to know if the juice is worth the squeeze with doing just cam replacement.

I found that Harry, Thank you. Is the uneven A/F due to to Cam replacement? That torque starting number is very impressive. Would you say then that it is a very noticicable upgrade, Is it a night and day difference?

Hey Fellas,

Looks like the 575 gear drive cams will be ready to ship by the end of this week.  We will ship in the order that orders have been received.  Thanks for your patience and support!  JK

I think I might give the 575 gear drive ago, is there anything else that should be done ? I saw a post about doing the cam bearings & oil pump & lifters while it was apart. Is the Feuling oil pump that much better than the stock HD one.(I only have 3000miles up)

Fueling pump and lifters along with a set of adjustable push rods. Always change your cam bearings with a cam change (inner and outer)

Aussie...you want the Super Pump.  When ordering, also order the Feuling Lifters.  Wally's Cycle World  http://www.wallyscycleworld.com/index.asp is cheaper than most dealer's cost number.  Pump and lifters both $294.00 including shipping.

Mike, you may want to give them a call.  I've found that frequently their web prices don't match their "specials" on any given day.  About 60 days ago, I bought 3 sets at the price I posted earlier.  They may have taken their special down by now.  Good luck and if that doesn't work, let me know and I'll make a couple of calls for you and see if we can beat the price.

Not to get off topic here but has anyone tried the Fueling Cam Support Plate??????

Some oil pump is mandatory if you're changing the cams to replace tensioners that have already spread debris through the oil pump.  Mine (almost certainly) won't be that bad from what I've seen in the oil filter.  It is, however, an option that's already going to be apart in your hands and hard to justify not doing as a result since the Feuling unit really is a better part.

As for the "Race Pump" or the Cam Plate; well... in a truly heavy duty application where "go" matters for everything and looks don't matter at all you do what you can.  Period.  The Race Pump and Cam Plate are red though.  And they'll look like crap against our silver motors  ;D .  Since they're really for a level of abuse greater than everyone here but Hubbard might dish out we can probably live without the red tumors on the side of the motor.

I have done many cam swaps and as long as the pump and lifters are in good shape they usually will work just fine. The lifters have rollers so the usually don't get much wear on a low mileage motor. The fueling pump does provide better scavenging and increased pressure.

Regardless of a pump change or not the Baisley bypass spring is a must do. It will increase you pressure at idle and across the RPM range by about 15%. It is only about $15.00 and very easy to install while your doing the cam swap.

I attached the install sheet for the spring for reference. They can be ordered over the phone only.

If someone is ordering the new Zippers cams it should at least be noted that Zippers has a similar product.  Can be ordered at the same time the cams are purchased so separate order and freight is avoided.  I think it was even a couple bucks cheaper (though that's not the issue).  Jim's right though, just another piece that's in your hands at the time and can be improved for short money.  In fact from the phone conversations I've had with them the reps at Zippers just about won't sell you the cams without sneaking this little bugger in as part of the order.

Twolane if I remember correctly the high pressure spring kit is 9 bucks from Zippers. Very easy to install and a must if your not changing the pump. As far as I am concerned if I have the cam plate out of a bike the Fueling pump and lifters are going in. The lifters also help oil flow to the top end of the motor(rockers) which will help you motor last longer and run cooler. Just my opinion though. It is cheap insurance for your 30 grand bike!!!!!

Is this fueling pump going to be a warranty issue. I have 5 years left and my dealer is willing to do the zippers cams with no effect on my warranty. Is this product going to be a sitting duck for a HD warranty inspector?

Agreed Mike.  They're going to be off in your hands anyway.  Granted, rollers don't care what cam their own so they don't have to be replaced.  But they're cheap enough it's difficult not to justify starting new again there when you can make an improvement in the process.

It's Harley.  Non-sanctioned air in the tires or unapproved electricity in the battery might be a warranty issue if the service writer or manager you're dealing with is a pinhead or an asshole.  The pump is an improvement, so it shouldn't be an issue.  Obviously if the new pump should fail and the motor gets trashed as a result than the new pump is to blame and there would be no warranty on the total failure.  This is both as it should be and fair.  But if the presumed failure is not caused by low oil pressure coming from a failed pump the rest of the internal engine warranty should be in tact (unless the pinhead at the counter says otherwise just because he can).

TWOLANE in regards to the lifters. The rollers are a very small part that you look at. The internals are where it is at. Pump up and stay there under a hard load. Also flow more oil supply to the top end of the motor. For less than 90 bucks it also is cheap insurance.

Be Safe

THE DAWG

Sorry if that was a bit confusing Mike.  When mentioning the roller I just meant that with the roller mechanism it wasn't mandatory to change them with a cam swap (so if someone is looking to save a few bucks you don't HAVE to change lifters).  But the real improvement comes from the internals.  Two different things in the same conversation.

Mike I concurr,

When I do a cam change, Inner and outer bearings and lifters are must change items when doing a cam swap.   while I didnt go with the Fueling system i changed out the lifters with the Screaming Chicken ones.
