110 tear down
« on: November 03, 2013, 04:39:55 PM »

hey guys, this is my first post but have been a reader for a while. I guess i'm not the only guy out there with moco problems either.
I have a 2010 cvo with 8000 miles on it and dropped it off to get some s&s easy starts put in. well while they had the bike they also checked for crank run out and it turned out to be .004 thousandths. I decided to split the cases and have the wheels done along with the Timken conversion. my local shop pulled the heads and the bottom end and sent them to kendall Johnson, the jugs are still with the bike here local. they are going to assemble the motor, and install the cams, and send the whole bike bake down to kendall to do the tune. I will be sure they will cc the heads after assembly.

I wanted to see what you guys thought of the list and who is doing it.
I will keep the jugs and pistons but kendall Johnson will be reworking the heads with 2.02/1.6 (I think, but not a 100%) and decking to achieve 10.2 compression ratio.
Kendall also suggested the 585 s&s would be fine down low with his tuning being done also.
I have a hpi55 with 5.3's and a screamin eagle eliminator that was already on the bike.
exhaust is a fulsacks head pipe(2011 model year-I think there has been an improvement in his design), and monster ovals.
I do a lot of solo but will be doing longer 2 up trips, my biggest concern is removing heat from the motor, but waking the motor up alittle.
What do you guys think

.004????  If you are staying with chain drive cams then that is just fine.

I wish my crank runout was that tight.  I just measured mine at .029.  My crank has to be replaced due to the runout and scoring at the cam support plate bushing end of the crankshaft.

I didn't think it was that bad but I only wanted to do this once. not sure if the hp made would cause problems later.

go 10.5-1 with the 585`s & just go with a S&S crank if you never want a problem again

There are lots of gooood builders out there & on this site. IMO none better than the one you have. His shop is bout 60 miles down the road and he builds some strong reliable stuff. Well known for his "Camel Bikes" back in the day. It has always been my thought that if you have a builder that you or your shop is confident in let him do what he is comfortable with. You will ALWAYS be better off.

Man this is my story to a T !!!  Same start to my total build. Wanted gear driven 585's  Checked the crank and it was 0.009 out. Check out my thread for details. What I can say after my build is all the crazy valve train noise is GONE!!!  Suuuuuuuper happy!!

It's a shock at first, but then you get in to the flow of the build and it becomes fun.  Just post some picks of the progress if you can, and keep us updated.  Very interested in the outcome.  The combo of parts we used got rid of that valve train noise!!! And the gears are totally silent!!

motor should be done in a week, then dyno time.

'Been owning Harleys since '76, What valve train noise you young'uns talkin' 'bout???

'Put solid lifters in the '81 Shovel so that it would run on a regular basis :: leaking down ~ lessened the lifter issues) Back in that day, Sifton (470 cam solid) was the Ticket.

All old school aside, the front intake lifter grenaded in the '09 SERG and took the motor out at 21k, after the new crank went in at 10k.

What has us all (even the MoCo ~ trust me, they are in on this) scratching our heads is that; it was a front intake lifter & that this 110 was very quiet (no taps, knocks, sewing machine, quietest 110 ever!) until the grenade went off and took out the rest of the motor, like a light switch.

It has been well documented that HD lifters have "issues" but front intake lifter failure is a very rare occurrence, usually exhaust fails, with rear ex at the top of the list. Could the lifter issue be due to a design deficiency of other component(s) ? Are the majority of issues in the 110s or do the smaller motors share the same issues? The '05 SEEG has been bulletproof so far (>50k)

I have a post here "Another Lifter Question" to ask for feedback on lifter choices and so far most of the gurus ( and I use that term with respect since these guys have been doin' this for awhile and they know what works and what doesn't) here recommend S&S. People say the S&S are quieter too...

I don't mind some valve train chatter, all I want is less lifter issues...

I made a decision to change from chain to cam drive. knowing the problems with the tensioners what kind of longevity do you expect from the two types. it's a extra 4 bills for gear driven!
