Replace tire or wait till on trip
« on: November 23, 2006, 05:34:40 PM »

If you are going on a 7500 mile trip and the rear tire on your bike only has 3000 miles, would you replace it before the trip or replace it while on your trip?

I'm with Scott

But also would have an idea of what dealer I would get it changed at.
If that's possible.

Brian,
I average around 9,500 miles on the rear running the same model Dunlop that H-D delivers the bike with. I can run those tires to 10k, but after I had the blowout in Canada and the ensuing crash, I do not go beyond the point where the tire still has some tread. My hide is worth a lot more than any tire costs. Having said that however, I will head out on a trip if the mileage of the trip combined with the mileage already on the tire does not exceed 9,500. If for any reason the tire starts to show excess wear I will find a dealer and have it changed. I often have oil changed done on the road. It's a great way to meet some new folks and maybe find a dealer you like. That's how I happened to become aquainted with Bumpus in Memphis. Now I always stop there whether I need anything or not. I think your question is somewhat driven by thinking that stopping for service in the middle of a trip is a pain. Plan on it and it isn't. Anyway, I would for sure head out on a 7,500 trip with a tire with only 3k on it. When you get to where you're going, decide what you want to do. At that point the tire will have maybe 6-7k on it ? That's still a safe tire but I would probably make my mind up at that point based on weather conditions and if there was a dealer where I was going to be for a couple days. LD has 7,500 miles on it now ( original tires) and I would head off on a 2,000 mile ride with it without worry. Just carry the HOG road atlas so you can locate a dealer and long distance is really no different than a series of long day rides.

If the tire is alright to start with I would head out on the trip and watch tire and change if needed. I got 15k out of the rear tire on my [smiley=pumpkin.gif]. [smiley=nixweiss.gif]

Definitely keep the tire - the current H-D (Dunlop) rear tires get much better mileage than those of just a few years ago.  Replaced mine at 11k miles, still had over 2/32" of tread.  Just check your air pressure and give the tires a good visual check before heading out in the mornings.

Ride it on the trip like folks are saying and get it done on the road.

Brian,

Depends on the trip and the tire.  Dunlop is on strike or was and there is a tire shortage in regards to Dunlop.   If you have a Dunlop I owuld try and find one where your going and be sure it has your name on it before I would just go off and hope.

If you run other tires I would just wait till its needed unless your planning on tearing a tire up sooner.

Making plans for the Nelson trip. I have ordered a new rear rim and tire 18x4.25=160. Thinking if I changed the rear back to stock for the trip it would probably be easier to get a new tire on the road. Stock tire has 3000 miles. Oh well  [smiley=nixweiss.gif] still have 6 months to make the final plan but Kathy likes to have everything planned in advance. Me, plan now, ride in 5 minutes.

ineresting debate, i had to have a tire changed during the cripple creek rally, and i missed a big group ride because of it. but i left knowing i would need to replace sometime during the trip. i also got my rear brakes done at the same time. i decided both of theses were more important to have done the day before riding up pike's peak then doing the group ride. but i also spent the day in the colorado springs area riding with with a small group from the site and we saw some things that those on the group ride didnt see. so als long as you know up front you will be stopping for one, then its just another planned part of the trip

At 3K, I'd head out on the trip, and coordinate a stock tire change at 7.5K with wherever I planned to be at that mileage to ensure the shop has time to get the stock tire and put my name on it.  I say that because I WILL NOT go any further than 7.5K on a stock rear tire.  Not sure if I'd go any further or less on any other tire, since I've always run stock tires.

Hey Gasm;
If you've got the bucks to throw away, replace the tire. If not, ride it out for awhile. 3,500 isn't

I'm with Spiderman on this one, seems that a routine oil change or tire replacement on a longer trip just becomes part of the motorcycle travel experience and can become a point of interest if you happen to get a good dealer/shop  w/ good people, etc.  It has happened to me more than once.  You just gotta plan for it 'on the fly' as the mileage/wear dictates.  Riding w/ a large group or schedule would impose other considerations though like Naitram did on his trip.  JMHO.  [smiley=drink.gif] har! spyder

When I take these long trips I always do a "10k" type service on the bike (I do the wrenching) whether it is due or not.  This also includes new plugs and tires unless the tiires are virtually new.  I'm kinda OCD and don't want to worry about all this stuff on the road.  I do admit it raises the cost of the trip about $350 but compared to what I'll spend during a three week trip on T-shirts, beer.......

See you in Nelson!

yee haw!  Brian and Kathy.  IF you are anything like us, between now and Nelson, [highlight]you will probably put about 3 - 5 thousand miles on your bikes[/highlight].  On top of current 3 - you will be sitting at 6 or 9 and at 9 you are about done, so you will be starting trip with a new tires. But stopping enroute is not the end of the world, with a phone call ahead to confirm availability, stopping at an interesting locale is fun too.

Candy,  problem is that now I have to put the new tire on, so when we leave I will have about 3000 on the new tire. Oh yea it will be an old tire by then.
It is interesting what opinions others have [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif]

i'd change it and not worry about it...who needs the bother and then you have a decent spare in the garage.

yea, probably...   however....   I don't like to remount a tire again, so I "try" to never break the bead until I replace it....     Just seems prudent...

I actually did replace the tire before the trip.......and again with only 300 miles from home on the trip.

7700 miles on that tire. Wore it down to the cord

I know :worthless: but the old pics are stored on a disc and as computer illiterate as I am, it would be a cold day in Hates before it will get posted .................without help :2vrolijk_21:

I will also have to say that some here are probably like me and do not want to spend half a day in a Harley shop when time is so precious and you want to take advantage of every minute on a trip.

Is that the tire he started the trip with? :nixweiss: ::) ;D ;D ;D

I can't seem to go on a trip without burning up or having to replace a rear tire somehow. Even when I start with a fresh one, something seems to happen. But, it is what it is. Stopping to get a new tire ain't the worst thing in the world, as long as you don't need to get towed off the road to get one! ;)

This one was towed (my trailer) - the bike began to shake - wobble so much it was un-ridable.

On our trip my tire never gave me any indication it was worn to the cord. If Kathy had not of noticed it I would have tried to make the last 300 miles home.

Reminded me of TCBham's tire in Maggie Valley last year. I could see from behind him how bad his tire looked...don't think he felt it.

He could not get the same tires he had on the bike...but he was able to get one to get home.

I rode this bike from my trailer to the driveway (100') and then up my driveway to the garage (100') I didn't think I was going to make it!

It is a tire like that that someone will ride down Int 95 at 80 mph for a few hundred miles and nothing will happen.

If you have ever looked at tires on bikes and cages in a rest area....you would quit driving on that road

With the unique tires on the F&R of the SERK3&4, I would order the tire well in advance if changing on the road.  The last time I needed one it took 4 weeks.  I now keep a set in my house.  I can always get it overnighted in an emergency.

Being that mine went bad on a Friday night I could not get it delivered till Monday.

Had a friend bring me my spare to Maryland.

Got the tire changed on Sunday morning and home the dame day.

Only cost me....Fuel....hotel room....Flat track race tickets.....more fuel.......but we made it home on Sunday :2vrolijk_21:
