New metric tire
« on: August 02, 2004, 04:47:46 PM »

Looking to add slightly more meat on the road and maybe prolong tire life.  Does anyone out there have information on the new metric Dunlop rear tire HD is putting on the '04' touring bikes?  I hear that they are about 0.5" wider than my stock '03 SERK's 130 tire.  Will this new tire fit the '03's or does it take a belt/pulley change?

I would look at switching to the Metezeller ME 880. Stay with the 130 on the fron and go with the 140 on the rear, no modifications, except maybe removing the rubber flap on the lower belt gurad.

Metzeller great handling on the cureves and in the rain.

What are the feelings about the metric 140 for both front and rear usage?

I do not know that the 140 can be mounted on the fron t in Metzellers Fitment Guide they only show the 130.

Has anyone installed the 140 Metzler ME880 on *their* '02 or '03 SERK without interference problems?

I've read and been told the only interference is between the belt and tire when the bike is rolled backwards. And it isn't even necessary to remove the rubber debris deflector.

For those of you that have installed the 140 on the rear, is there a problem backing the bike up?

I just yesterday put Metzeler's ME880 140/90HB16 on the rear of my "03 SE Road King and had no interference problems at all.  Even the rubber flap cleared.  I think the flap could be moved if needed, and there are pulley spacers made of varying thickness if you need to move it over some.  But on my bike, it fit perfectly.
I might also mention that I called two mechanics about balancing the tire and wheel and both told me that it you arent' going to cruise all day at 100 you shouldn't need to balance it, so I didn't.  Took it out today up to 85 and it felt as smooth as ever.  Just be sure that on a Metzeler, that you put the two red dots (the lightest spot on the tire) on the sidewall, at the air valve on the wheel.  [smiley=bigok.gif]
