engine noises
« on: April 29, 2011, 07:10:05 PM »

Hey guys,

Anyone out there having very noisy valve train or pinging noises?

Also have an extremely noisy transmission while in neutral.  Harley calls it a "neutral rattle".

MY 110 HAS ALOT OF VALVE TRAIN NOISE THAT WAS THERE FROM DAY ONE, MILE ONE. IT WAS SO LOUD I TOOK IT BACK TO THE DEALER SEVERAL TIMES ONLY TO BE TOLD "ITS NORMAL".  AFTER GETTING TOGETHER WITH OTHER SE RIDERS I LEARNED THEY WERE CORRECT.  THE ALL DO MAKE VALVE TRAIN NOISES!  SOME WORSE THAN OTHERS SOME BETTER THAN OTHERS.  AFTER 20K MILES I PULED THE CAMS, LIFTERS AND ROCKERS BOXES. NOTHING WORN, NOTHING BROKEN, NOTHING HITTING.  SO I TRY TO IGNORE IT AND WHEN I CANT I TURN UP THE RADIO.

I HAVE THE SAME THING.  CLUTCH IN, NO NOISE....CLUTCH OUT......SOUNDS LIKE IT IS COMING APART! Valve train ticking noise?????  Yeah, I got that too.  So do both my buddies on their 09 and 10 CVO Ultras.  I guess it comes with the territory.

Check the post titled,      engine, trans and primary lubricants.
Might help you to deal with the noises. The trans oil with shockproof didnt eliminate my trans noise but it did reduce it

My 09 SERG and my 2011 Limited both have those noises when hot, pull in the clutch and the noise is about gone, top end on both bikes make the same noise as yours.  Doc

My 2011 CVO Street Glide had a ticking sound at 2000 RPM.  I eventually figured out it was the radio front piece.  I inserted a small piece of plastic under the front piece that cannot be seen and the sound went away.  I thought sure it was the engine but I was wrong.  I found it by pushing on the front bottom of the radio while running at 2000 RPM.
