yet another annoying sqweak thread
« on: April 30, 2007, 08:30:37 PM »

hey gang..

this has come up in a few threads but didnt see any real replies....
my 05 recently came out of the 10k service and has a pronounced annoying squeak on the front that  can hear at low speeds ( with the stereo down  ::)) pretty certain its the front brake draggin'

stopped in to the "experts" today at PPHD and the tech told me "they all do that, its normal".  while my experience is admittedly compared to some..this is the first time "they have all done that" to me.

1) should i be concerned?
2) other than turn up the tunes; WTF do i do about it? itr drives me nuckin' futs   :confused5:

thanks

Chase it down and fix it.

I spent a year or better chasing a noise. I was persistent and only did one thing at a time until I found it. :2vrolijk_21:

Scott

Not to take away from your front end concern but there have been times when a squeak thought coming from the front end turned out to be the drive belt.

And
As far as the nuckin futs,, to late,, your already there! ;)

Scot....like Chip said, it could be the belt and it's bouncing off the fairing and coming back to you making you think it's the front end.  They might have adjusted the belt too tight.

Or, if it's your brakes, I'm assuming you have good pad wear left on them?  Does it do it all the time...when the bike is cold...when the bike is hot...when you apply the brakes hard, does it stop, get worse, or stay the same?  If it's brakes, it should be different or go away under one of those conditions.

If it's not the brakes or belt, then you have to start chasing the noise and find out what's rubbing on what.

interesting points gang..

some thoughts i will have to consider....

i suppose it could be the belt noise....

the pads look fine...  no excessive wear..
not sure about the hot cold thing....  but it does go away with front brake pressure....
i will kep chasing it

thanks gang

I had a squeaky brake under braking, took it in because it was under warranty, they tried to give me that, "well their floating calipers that's normal". I told them I have several bikes with floating brake systems and they didn't squeak! So they looked at it and shimmed the rotor, then I had a constant rub, kind of like your talking about so I took it back and now I'm back to the squeal under braking!!!  One thing you can check is take your bike for a ride with out using the front brake, not to far. Then touch the rotors, be careful if it's really rubbing hard it can get hot even though you didn't use the front brakes. I found that the right rotor was pretty warm while the left was still pretty cool. This will tell you which is making the noise, then you need to figure out why. If you find a warm rotor, you might take that caliper off clean it check the pistons and how the pads fit, anti rattle clips are in there and see if you can find a problem. I haven't bothered you mine again, I'll get to it someday, but I couldn't take the constant rub, I knew that wasn't right!!

I find whenever I take a wheel off and put it back on again, that I get this problem. Noisy hot brakes. Takes awhile for the floating part to re-center itself I guess because it stops after a bit and the brakes run cool, quiet and smooth. Always geeks me out though until they straighten themselves out.

You could try using brake cleaner on the brake rotors/calipers. Works for me sometimes.

Scot, you're just totally hosed.  They screwed up the bike beyond repair.  You need to sell it.  Cheap.  To me.  I'm helpful that way.
