Progressive 440s Preference
« on: March 09, 2005, 10:20:04 AM »

I'm sold on getting progressive 440s due to earlier threads, but am curious if I should go with the heavy duty or standard (under what conditions is one better than the other) and ...12" or 12.5".  What do you use?  Thanks in advance for the feedback.

std 12.5".  I weigh 190# and at 3 turns the ride height is identical to the std air shocks at 10psi when I am seated on the bike.
If you are 200# or less and don't plan to have a passenger a lot, progressive recommends the std springs.

Here's hoping she's talking smack... [smiley=argue.gif] .....just ordered the 12" Standards today, tired of dealing with air pumps, bottoming out, etc.  We'll see.

Suspension Minds
(words & music by Mark James)
We're caught in a trap
I can't walk out
Because I love you too much baby

Why can't you see
What you're doing to me
When you don't believe a word I say?

We can't go on together
With suspension minds
And we can't build our dreams
On suspension minds

So, if an old friend I know
Drops by to say hello
Would I still see a 440 suspension in your eyes?

Here we go again
Asking where I've been
You can't see these tears are real
I'm crying

We can't go on together
With suspension minds
And be can't build our dreams
On suspension minds

Oh let our love survive
Or dry the tears from your eyes
Let's don't let a good thing die

When honey, you know
I've never lied to you
Mmm yeah, yeah

burp.

I just put mine on yesterday, hopefully my wife will notice a big difference, after shelling out another $540 on a bike that "has everything I would ever want already on it" my reputation with her is on the line here. one note although the installation is very easy 10 min. make sure you bleed the air out of the old shocks before disconnecting the air line. There is oil in the line,
according to the list that my wife is keeping new shocks=$540 new jacket to replace oil stained one = $100  [smiley=oops.gif]

O.K.  just got back from the first ride of the year with the new shocks. Looks like I'll live to see another day. The wife loves them. I also noticed a huge difference its not so much a softer ride its just smother. I highly recommend these to anyone who thinks the bike rides to stiff. My wife is now happy with the ride,,the world is a better place to live......at least for me.

Yes, just jack the back end up, change one side at a time, shouldn't take more than 15 minutes counting the beer break between each side. [smiley=drink.gif]

The 12" version is the same length as the stock shocks but the 12.5" will still maintain the "lowered look". Hope it helps. [smiley=thumbsup.gif]

You must have had a bad salesperson. Mine shipped the next day. I believe that quite a few people from this site ordered from them as well and I haven't heard of any other problems. That sucks.

That was important to me too.  I went with the 12" length Progressives to keep the stock height and Standard Duty, not Heavy Duty, as I ride mainly solo, so didn't want ride too rough.  Worked out very well, much improved ride and handling over stock air shocks and bike retains slammed look of stock.

I have the 12"HD, ride two up most of the time. set at two turns from the softest there perfect. I think you can turn them about 8 turns firmer. at the softest setting we were bottoming out. I'm 210, wife is 110(+-30#).
ELVIS just noticed under your signature it says "honest honey it already comes with everything"....I wish i had a dime for every time those words were brought back up in my face ....I could buy lots more parts I don't need..

Said this some place else but maybe worth repeating. I put on 12.5 in heavy dutys & am very happy with them. But, if I did it again I would try the standards. Weigh 250 & ride solo 99% of the time. I run mine on the softest setting & maybe could go softer if I had the option. They are an excellent investment, much improved ride & handleing.

Correct...I had placed the order in plenty of time for the trip, thinking hey, they are in stock, place the order on Tuesday, April 12, they will ship on the 13th.  Well my credit card hit on the 13th but by Tuesday April 19 They still did not ship.  Yesterday, there was a credit on my card so I am square financially.

I specifically asked about the in-stock status.  Most honest companies won't hit your credit card until an item ships.  So when I saw the charge, I thought it shipped.  I called Fri and Monday to check on status and they both times said to call back again.  When I found out on Tuesday they still had not shipped, I pulled the plug.

I have decided to load the bike in the truck so I may take the SED instead...still not sure!

I'm gonna get my yellow bird next week. I weight 235 and my wife 150. Most of the time we ride together.
What would be the ideal progressive 440 that I could get?
Do you know where I can buy it in Canada (Quebec)?

I'd be really word about shocks with an eye toward separatism.  Get 'em from the states.
(ok, that was lame).

Based on my own experience with the shocks you might consider the 12.5" heavy duty units.  I love the ride and they'll handle the passenger load at only a moderate shock setting.

Hotmetal2, I put the 12.5 on mine. I am heavier at 275 & wife is closer to 175. Only wish I had done it sooner. Find a local aftermarket shop to buy them through. Got mine for $550 cdn incl tax, dealer wanted over $600 before tax.

Well the install was a piece of cake, took about 20 minutes. One important thing for those of you with the air shocks. Check your lines!!!. While removing mine I found the line going to the right shock was completely pinched by the fender strut cover. [smiley=thumbsdown.gif] I doubt that side had any air getting to it. That explains partly why the ride was so crummy. I'm looking forward to the new ride quality!!

hd-dude, pinched line on the stock shocks or not, you'll be quite impressed with the 440's.  I have the 12" HD's also.  I weigh around 220.  It took about 3 turns before they started feeling "right" to me.  Try experimenting during your ride tomorrow to find the right adjustment for you.  They only take a minute or two to adjust and are responsive to as little as a 1/2 turn.

Enjoy! [smiley=beerchug.gif]

I have not tried the new 440s.You know I always want more or better. For example on my last cruiser the only thing that was stock was the key switch and kickstand. It was everything I wanted in that particular bike. Then I sold it because I had to have the FLHTCSE2. I have less than 2000 miles on my SE2 and last month I did some double up high speed touring around the Fredricksburg, Austin area in Texas. I thought the stock suspension worked well and I weigh 220 lbs plus a 100 lb passenger. I am sure that after sometime and some miles the stock suspension wont work as well and it will be repalced. But for now LESS IS MORE.  [smiley=confused5.gif]  [smiley=bigok.gif] [smiley=shocked2.gif] [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif]

The 440's are the way to go.I also found the air line was pinched on one side? Now that the new shocks are on ,I dont think the stock seat is all that bad.

I have had my 440's on for about 3 weeks now.
I wouldn't say the ride is "1970's GM float on a cloud ride", but the the ride now over bridge expansion joints on the Garden State Parkway (New Jersey) was worth the price alone.
Before I had to stand on the pegs, now it is smooth sailing.

Might be a bad choice of a phrase, "smooth sailing", with the screen name "porthole" you guys might think I was a "blow boater" "rag bagger" etc. (sail boter)

Put abput 220 miles on the 440's today. Definitely say they ride much better than the air shock. Set them on 2 turns to start, then softer to 1

Unfortunately being inflated or not wouldn't have made a tremendous amount of difference.  They seemingly all leak down so eventually most of us have ridden without air for a bit without realizing it.  The original Showa's are just poor enough that you don't tell a lot of difference.

I have a new bike being delivered next week. Question can I get the Progressive Part numbers for the 12's and the 12.5's. After reading this trend it seesm like a no brainer to change out the shocks.

I have 300 miles on since installing the 440's. You guys were right! Worth every dollar. I had to underinflate rear tire by 5psi with passenger with stock air shock just to be rideable. DID not matter what psi was used in airshock, bumps jolted the spine. This is now gone! Used #440-4019B 12.5" heavy duty, 3 full turns from softest. Ride 2up most of time. Total weight bike loaded 365to390lbs. Got shocks from Walley's Cycle World as recomended by rep at Progressive. Many thanks to all for getting me onto this...

When yall are talking about turns are talking 1 complete revolution or reference mark the instructions show? Let me see if I can scan the instructions.

One revolution.  The reference mark is not finite enough for the proper adjustment.  The only way to get both sides the same is to start with the ring to the full counter-clockwise position and then count turns.

I want to order some Progressives for my 05 SEEG and want to retain the factory lowered height.  Someone previously suggested purchasing the 12" and another said the 12.5" will retain the original lowered height.  Can someone tell me which one I should buy?

12.0" is stock for the SEEG, however, some have reported seeing no visible difference in ride height with the 12.5".  I'm using the 12.0" HD and am very, very happy with them.  The bike actually sits ever so slightly higher in the rear even with the 12.0's, so, IMHO, if you are concerned about maintaining the stock height (like I was) you should go with those.  You may get a somewhat better ride out of the 0.5" taller shocks, but I can't believe it can get a whole lot better than the 12.0's and they would almost certainly raise the bike up more.

Agree that the 12.0's rock...keeps the stock height and the ride is great.  Went with the Standard Duty version as I usually ride solo and weigh somewhere around 170...that's my story and I'm stickin' to it. [smiley=laugh.gif]

[smiley=xyxthumbs.gif]Thank you for making me aware of the 440's.  The only thing I didn't like about my SEEG was the ride.  The 440's cured that -- no more gritting my teeth when I see big bumps coming.  I am approx 200 lbs at 2 turns -- what have you found to be the best tire pressure settings for a single rider?  Are you losing any handling with the softer ride?  The improvement is better than I hoped for.

This is great information!!! Coming from a Fatboy and this being the first bagger I've ever ridden. I was inclined to believe that I was getiting a comfortable ride w/stock shocks. But now I have been enlightened I will definately add these shocks to my wish list. I know the wife will be happy to make the ride more comfortable, the "wedgie" seat that the MoCo used for a passenger seat on the '04's leaves a lot to be desired on a long haul. It is great for looks, but lacks comfort, and you know what they say.. "When Momma isn't happy [smiley=veryangry.gif], nobody is happy [smiley=veryangry2.gif]". I had been looking at getting another seat for comfort, but if new shocks can make everyone more comfortable and retain the sleek lines that I like so much about the bike this may be the way to go. From what I'm gathering from this thread and considering my dimensions (250+/- LBS) and majority of my riding is solo I think I should get the 12.5" HD. Would this be correct? Thanks

Okay, so my choice of living arrangements seems to be a little isolated....  and I can't find a dealer for Progressives within a hundred miles....    Does anybody know the best, (most economical) place to mail order them is?

There is a thread for Direct Parts on here somewhere.  I marked them in my favorites on the tool bar, they have pretty good prices.  Or check, Direct parts.com, get their price and cal J&P cycles, they have a price guarantee.

I have them a 2 turns and weight about 200#. I'm still going to play with them a bit this weekend. I'll let you know what I end up with.

Jim, is that "two turns" or "two clicks"?

I just ordered the 440 Polished 12" standard from Wally World for $388.50 shipped.  Is this the same shock that you're using?

HD-DUDE, what did they mean HD shocks, is that heavy duty, or Harley Davidson?  I am virtually always 2 up.  Between the 2 of us that is about 350#, with anything in the bags.  I notice the bike is pretty hard on the high speed bumps, actually jars my back a bit.  Think the progressives are a good fix?  What do you do with the air settings from the stock set up?

One question I haven't seen yet concerning the Progressives - do you have to remove the bags to adjust them, or is there enough room and leverage with just the lid open?  I moved the air valve on the stockers up higher on the bracket so I could adjust air pressure without removing the bag (I go from solo to 2-up and back to solo quite a bit).

I alos have the 12" HD on my 05 SEEG so your saying 1/2 click is much softer. I tried 2 turns and it was a little solid for 1 ride and okj for 2. I tried 1 click and its beter with one and greta with 2. So maybe 1/2 or no clcik would be best for 1 rider 240 lbs you think for the softest ride?

Its really a personal preference on where you set them. I hoover around 200#'s and like the 1/2 turn setting. Its still stiff enough to roll through the twisties without a lot of sagging.

Why are some going with 12" and some going with 12.5".  If I am happy with the seat height, which way should I go.  And who has come up with the best price on the 440 HD's?
BTW, the ride on this bike is a lot rougher than my '95 FLHT was with stock shocks and air.  I cannot believe the MOCO would put out a bike designed for touring with such poor creature comforts like the shocks and seat.  Guess they wanted it to look good, (the seat) and didn't care about what you couldn't see, (the shocks). I did the 12 inch HD ,ride about 50-50 solo or 2 up,I am about 5 foot 10 inches the stock ride hight was perfect for me.A friend that is about 6 foot tall did the 12.5 inch hd ,we can not tell much difference in the two seegs? If you think the stock 2005 seat is bad ,try a 2004 it is much worst for the passenger!

They know the bikes get bought for what they look like on the floor, not how they ride on the street or how your butt feels at the end of the second tank part way through your riding day.  It seems they think that selling them is the MoCo's part of the job.  Making them more effectively rideable than falls on us after we get them home.

I can finally report on the 440's!  I went w/ the 12.5 HD [4019C] and started w/ 2 full turns.  I'm 6'2" 200lb and usually ride solo.  First,  the extra 1/2 in in length only raised the bike 3/16" measured from lift bed to top shock bolt.  Second.........these shocks have far exceeded my expections!!!   They should be considered as a mandatory upgrade.  I rode 490 miles over the last 2 days on some of the best and worst roads NH and VT has to offer and the 440's are sweet!!!!!!!!!   I never played w/ the 440's and at 2 turns they will stay untill I put the wife on the back and see?

Ty all for all the good and accurate info. [smiley=thumbsup.gif]

Would some knowledge soul please start a new thread on what they did to improve the front suspension??   Oil, springs and the cartridge in the left fork??   [smiley=nixweiss.gif]

Ride safe all...........

A few years ago I put the lowered PS shocks on my FLHS, and then installed white bros progressively wound springs up front.  I removed all the air suspension shi* and installed plugs to seal the forks. Worked great...

Jim....The best match for the 440's are the Progressive Fork Springs #11-1528.  Don't recall what I paid for them at the moment, but you'll notice as much improvement in the front as the 440's give to the back end.

Yes.  You have to use the shouldered spacers in order to get the proper offset and not have the rubber bushings riding on the frame/swingarm.

I used 4 shouldered sleeves on the shocks with the shoulder in towards the bike. When I put the shock on the top bolt on the right side the bottom was away from the swingarm 1/2 " exactly the width of sleeve #4. On the left side the shock was pushing on the swingarm and with a spacer on top it was perfect. In both cases I could have forced them over easily but with the spacers they are more square. Otis, hands only - there's no tool that I'm aware of. [smiley=nixweiss.gif].  Hold the spring and twist the top collar counter-clockwise all the way until it stops and then mark with a paint stick so you can count the turns.  Next, set the preload to where you want to start out.  Then, go for a spin and adjust until you're happy with the results.

Yeah,  you're right, the instructions aren't that great.  Here's the procedure I used to get mine set up:

1) Hold the spring stationary with one hand and grab the top collar with the other hand and turn the collar counter-clockwise until it stops.  That will be the zero preload setting.  It may be tough to rotate the collar the first few times you do it.

2) Mark the top of the collar with an paint pen or magic marker so you can count rotations off in the next step.

3) Hold the spring stationary with one hand and grab the top collar with the other hand and turn the collar clockwise one rotation (or how ever many rotations you want to start out with).

4) Go for a ride and experiment with various settings until you find the one that suites you and your riding style.  My 12" HD 440's are sensitive to only 1/2 turns of the collar, so you may want to make your adjustments a 1/2 turn at a time until you find the setting you're happy with.

Hope that helps.  Let me know if you have any more questions.

Going through the old posts and bring back some topics that are relevant to me and my 'new to me' '04 SEEG.

I just got home yesterday after putting over 1000 miles on my pumpkin in 3 days, not a record I know but it was all back roads and some of it on extremely rough back roads.  I am just shy of 2 years out from neck fusion surgery, and am having some of the worst pain since the surgery.  Those stock air shocks have to go!

I'm planning on a set of Progressive 940's, does anyone have any comments on these?

Trying to understand the application for 13.5" HD.. which I am considering. I have a '11 FLTRUSE and my touring load is well over 400#s. I am also 6'3" tall.

So when my BSR is in place, we have rough rides if we hit small potholes, bumps and road blemishes.
Does 13.5" make sense or should I be looking at 13"?

Thanks
