Otis, hands only - there's no tool that I'm aware of. [smiley=nixweiss.gif].  Hold the spring and twist the top collar counter-clockwise all the way until it stops and then mark with a paint stick so you can count the turns.  Next, set the preload to where you want to start out.  Then, go for a spin and adjust until you're happy with the results.

Yeah,  you're right, the instructions aren't that great.  Here's the procedure I used to get mine set up:

1) Hold the spring stationary with one hand and grab the top collar with the other hand and turn the collar counter-clockwise until it stops.  That will be the zero preload setting.  It may be tough to rotate the collar the first few times you do it.

2) Mark the top of the collar with an paint pen or magic marker so you can count rotations off in the next step.

3) Hold the spring stationary with one hand and grab the top collar with the other hand and turn the collar clockwise one rotation (or how ever many rotations you want to start out with).

4) Go for a ride and experiment with various settings until you find the one that suites you and your riding style.  My 12" HD 440's are sensitive to only 1/2 turns of the collar, so you may want to make your adjustments a 1/2 turn at a time until you find the setting you're happy with.

Hope that helps.  Let me know if you have any more questions.

Going through the old posts and bring back some topics that are relevant to me and my 'new to me' '04 SEEG.

I just got home yesterday after putting over 1000 miles on my pumpkin in 3 days, not a record I know but it was all back roads and some of it on extremely rough back roads.  I am just shy of 2 years out from neck fusion surgery, and am having some of the worst pain since the surgery.  Those stock air shocks have to go!

I'm planning on a set of Progressive 940's, does anyone have any comments on these?

Trying to understand the application for 13.5" HD.. which I am considering. I have a '11 FLTRUSE and my touring load is well over 400#s. I am also 6'3" tall.

So when my BSR is in place, we have rough rides if we hit small potholes, bumps and road blemishes.
Does 13.5" make sense or should I be looking at 13"?

Thanks
