Why not use a standard amplifier instead of a Hawg Wired?
A friend just installed a standard Pioneer amplifier in his Goldwing. It works great on the Goldwing. I don't see why this is not possible on an Ultra also.

based on what i have seen written here, the hawg wired is a digital amp and therfore draws less current and generates less heat, a traditional amp usually has ventalition requirenments to keep it from melting down. this would be hard to do hidden in a fairing,

the new harley amp gets mounted under the tour-pack i assume it needs the airflow to keep it cool

Heat, Current draw, and size are the reasons. Car amps are designed for cars with little or no regard to heat and current draw as cars have space for cooling as well as charging systems that can handle the added load.

here is a clip of info from the Hawg-Wired Site:
What makes our amplifiers different from the rest?

It's what's on the inside that counts, so we chose the best in digital amplifier technology the industry has to offer; Tripath Technology.

Quoted from Tripath Technologies' website:
"Class-T® digital amplifiers provide the audio fidelity of traditional linear (Class-A/B) amplifiers with more than twice the power efficiency of these devices. This leads to higher levels of integration and smaller packages at the semiconductor level. At the system level, these advantages reduce the size of power supplies and heat sinks and significantly reduce the heat management challenges of today's dense, complex electronic systems. While pulse width modulated (PWM) switching amplifiers (Class-D) can also achieve similar power advantages, none have been able to do so without a significant compromise in audio fidelity. Hence Tripath's new designation, the Class-T® digital amplifier the new standard in audio performance and power efficiency."

Class-T® digital power amplifiers are both highly efficient and sonically pure. Utilizing this technology, we've designed our audio amplifiers to produce high powered output, while consuming less power from your motorcycles 12 volt system. The result is undeniable; Pure raw clean sound without the dead battery.

The problem with digital amps is they are typically harsh on the high end of the frequency range (that's why most use them for sub/bass amps), I have read they are making strides in that area to improve quaility but I wouldn't spend in excess $500 for a digitial amp that I couldn't hear/test drive first!!! I have this setup in my own bike and I would assure you that the sound is not harse in any way. The high end on this system is crystal clear audiophile quality sound. If you would like to try a set out purchase them and if your not satisfied send em back for a refund!

Distortion spec on these is .005% at almost their full 150 watt output.  Can't get much better than that.  From deep lows to crisp high ends they make the system sound great.

Car stereo AMPS work great in a bike, but most decent ones will not fit inside a fairing.  I used to own a retail stereo shop & we sold/installed high end car stereo.  I did my own stereo in this bike:

http://www.pbase.com/jmorton10/image/47853106

I used four 6.5" Sony X-Plod speakers(two in the fairing & two in the lowers), a Clarion Pro Audio AM/FM/CD/CD-R/MP3 head unit with a 45 second anti-shock memory to 100% totally eliminate CD skipping(TuneTrapper antenna inside the fairing)& an Alpine true 150 watt RMS per channel at .005 distortion AMP mounted in the left saddle bag.

This setup totally blows away any factory HD system & 99% of the added on systems out there.  If I want, I can listen to talk radio clearly at 85 mph even over a fairly loud exhaust(motor is a high compression 95 incher, well over 100HP).  Music sounds amazing, it is like a "wall of sound" in front of me.

Jock;
I am using the Hawg-Wired Speakers and the Hawg-wired 150watt amps set. If your not familiar with them Twolane did a great review on the site here:

I am a dealer for Hawg-wired and offer members a 10% discount as well. [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif]
