Wild 1 575 Bars
« on: April 19, 2004, 09:29:15 AM »

I finally received my Corbin dual tour seat and it moved me up and back. I'm now seriously thinking about changing my handlebars to Wild 1 575 to get more pullback.  http://www.wild1inc.com/whats_new.html

Do any of you have these bars on your SEEG?  Are you happy with them? Was the stock wiring for the controls, throttle cables, brake and clutch lines long enough to accommodate the extra rise and pullback? If not, which items had to be replaced and do you have part numbers for the replacements?

Are they any other alternatives for handlebars that'll fit the SEEG?

Thanks in advance for any info you can provide :)

Just an update...  I ordered the Wild 1 575 bars with the left side recess for the hydraulic clutch master cylinder.  The bars were in stock and shipped the same day.  I removed the stock bars Sunday afternoon and started installing the 575 bars last night.

Other than the front brake line, all the stock wiring harnesses, clutch line and throtlle cables are long enough. Just sitting on the bike they feel great. The bars are wider and have more pullback than the stock bars.  The 1-1/4" diameter of the bars looks strong and fit the "personality" of the SEEG.

Hopefully I'll have time today to go and pick up a longer front brake line so I can finish up the installation.  I'll post before and after pics once I'm finished.

I finally finisihed installing the 575 bars and went for a short ride. It feels like a totally different bike. It felt really weird the first couple of times I turned the front wheel while backing the bike out the garage.  Hard to explain, but the extra width made it feel more like the Road King I had a year or so ago that also had Wild 1 bars (which is a good thing).  The added width also gives more leverage for counter steering making it almost effortless. The extra pullback seems about perfect for me at 5'9".

I did take pics and will post them as soon as my home computer is up and running again. I also installed the Corbin "stinger" solo seat and took pics of that too.

My wife reminded me this week of what I said when I was thinking about buying the SEEG. That was "If I buy this bike I won't have to do anything to it. It has everything I want right out of the box".  I guess I was wrong as usual!

Do you happen to have the part number for that longer front brake line?
The sales rep at Wild said that the stock line would work, but if you have actually done the installation and say that it needs the longer line, then thats the way I'll go.  Thanks

Yeah Mobe, sure did.  Ordered it just yesterday or the day before (forget which).  The girl at Wild 1 told me I got the last one with the clutch recess that they had in stock.  Sorry 'bout that.....  Hopefully someone in the dealer channel someplace will have something though.

I'd waited to see where the new seat was going to put me and how everything would "feel" with it in place.  After about five hundred miles on the new seat it's been the case that it takes about an hour in the saddle then I start "feeling it" between my shoulder blades.  A little more on the right than on the left.   But it's a discomfort that I'm pretty sure bringing the bars a bit closer to me will help.  So it's one last change to be done before spring then nothing will be in the way of just riding it.

I put these bars on the bike just before Sturgis. The folks at Wild 1 are on crack when it comes to the brake line. There's no way it will work. I have always hated the connections on the Goodridge (harley) brakeline. You have to replace everything  top and bottom. Russell and Goodridge both make modular setups which will allow you to vary the lengths of the top and bottom sections. I haven't compared Harley's setup pricewise but here are the part #'s for both setups.

Harley, (they only offer these by model so you would have to pick the one with the longer top line...bottom lines are the same length)

FLHR/FLTR......45212-97B
Electra glide (not FLHTCSE).....45441-03
page 473 in the 2005 parts & accessories catalog

Goodridge ( could also use Russell) (part #'s are from Drag Specialties Catalog)

1--- 1204-4306 Wide Glide one piece front junction (Russell piece, chrome)
2--- 1741-0042 12" universal lines w/ chrome tips
1--- 1741-0034 30" universal line  w/ chrome tips
1--- 59203CH  Straight Chrome 10mm banjo
2--- 59903CH  90 degree Chrome 10mm banjos
1--- 44516-6  6 pack copper crush washers 10mm

The sad thing is that these setups cost almost as much or more than the bars.

Hope this helps [smiley=beerchug.gif]

I read the post, went out and rode my bike (with the stock bars) and  my neck and back feel like a million bucks! Naw, make that 1.5 million.  I guess my clone was the test pilot for the HD bars.

I have this new accessory that allows me to go out into the garage and yell "Who's your Daddy" and my SEEG will crank automatically.  Sorry, I lost the part supplier's name and phone number.

Thanks for the parts list and #'s ordered a set of bars yesterday she said they where out of stock and it would be 2 weeks to ship.  That should give me time to order the brake line.

I am intrested in replacing my handle bars, with the installation of the Corbin seat I sit further back (I am 5'11").  I am thinking I would need about 2" of pull back.  Would any of you all have the part numbers of the handle bars you all installed?  I have been out to their website and they offer alot of products.  Thanks

Good luck ordering the bars mine have been on back order since10-28-04 and every time I call they say they will ship at the end of the week, well hear I sit and still no bars.  Last time I talked to them they said it was a vendor problem and they where pulling single flat adding the flat for the clutch and having them rechromed.  Yeah right.

Well the bars went much easier than I thought.  Has anyone tried to install the mp3 player with these bars?

I put the wild one 575's and heated grips on over the weekend. The whole project took about 12 hours, but I was taking my time, and did some modifications to make the heated grips work. I'll Post a few pics.....

Mommy, Mommy!  Mobe trashed his new bike!

The bar change is quite a chore.  But the important thing now is do you think you're going to like the feel due to the difference enough to justify the change?  I probably sat there ten minutes feeling the bars in different places and just letting my hands and arms rest finding what was for me the "sweet spot."   Congrats on getting her done and hope you find the difference to be as pleasant as I have.

What can I say, I'm slow.
Actually I spent a lot of time on the heated grips. I had to modify the switch housings and the left grip. I also had to extend the grip to grip wire by about 10 inches. Then I added an extra acc switch to the switch panel and wired it in so that the grips do not receive power unless the switch is on. (I don't like the way they have you wire it in the instructions, especially since I ran all of the wires internally). I wanted to have a way to cut all power to the grips on command. I spent a lot of time pondering how to modify the grips and wires, then I spent extra time soldering connectors to everything and spent quite a bit of time cleaning since I had the bike apart.
I also had to take time out to play with the dog, listen to some good tunes, enjoy a good brew or two and ponder the meaning of life. All in all a very relaxing day. [smiley=givemebeer.gif]

Mobe aren't you worried about running the wires inside the handlebars,  I hear the resister wires get hot and can melt the hole wire loom on that side of the bars.  Thats why HD says not for use with internal wiring.

MOBE

I see in picture 1 that you are attempting to use the screwdriver as a "BRIDGE" between the positive and negative terminals of your battery. I can tell you from experience that a longer screwdriver will accomplish the task in a much more efficient (and Sparkling) manner. I have long thought that the battery is a perfect tool tray also. I just wonder why HD doesn't put edges on the darn Batteries?

Seriously thoough....YOU HAVE GOT TO TAKE THE THING BACK APART AND USEA FULL LENGTH TO CLAMP. IF YOU DON'T THE VIBRATION WILL ( I REPEAT, WILL) CAUSE THE BARS TO CRACK AND BREAK BETWEEN THE CLAMPS. I HAVE SEEN THIS HAPPEN ON 2 OUT OF 2 OCCASSIONS WHERE THE BARS WERE INSTALLED THIS WAY.

The reason I say they are still not right is I had to take a file to the front allen bolts and file them down other wise the radio hit the allens and you can't install it.  Same problem in with the rear allens they hit the switch cover.  The reason is the pockets for the allen bolts is not deep enough and the allens stick up farther than with the stock clamps.

Magoo;
I don't see how the wires could get hot enough in normal use to melt additional wires in the handlebars without melting and shorting themselves out.
The wires that go from grip to grip are just normal wires in a regular plastic sleave, (sp?).
They don't appear to be made of any kind of special heat resistant material.
These wires go inside of the handlebar regardless of the application.
Nevertheless, I ran the power for the whole mess to a fused accessory switch so that I didn't rely on the switch on the end of the left grip. This way when I turn the acc switch off, no power is routed to any component of the grips. [smiley=nervous.gif]

PCC;
Does the road king use a one piece clamp?
I'm thinking that if it does this would be a good piece to use.
I'll check with my parts guy today and see if it's a one piece.
Thanks for the heads up. I sure don't look forward to tearing that all back apart, but I bet its a real bitch riding with half a handlebar! [smiley=nervous.gif]

The one piece clamp you need is one like is used in the softtail family...

http://www.harley-davidson.com/gma/gma_product.jsp?PRODUCT%3C%3Eprd_id=845524441846711&FOLDER%3C%3Efolder_id=2534374302290231&ASSORTMENT%3C%3East_id=2534374302290231&bmUID=1104339669220&bmLocale=en_US

It's odd that the HD SEEG bars have a cutout in the section bewteen the risers to accomondate internal wiring just like the 575 bars and HD did not use a one piece clamp

I had an old softail clamp from a 2000 softail standard. The purpose is to prevent flexing right at the middle of the bars where the ho;e for the wires to come out is. The bars are so heavy due to the 1 1/4 inch diameter that gravity and vibration will crack the machined down area in
the middle.

I know a lot of you just recently got your bars and Wild 1 was in kind of a rush to ship. I wonder if their quality control just took a dump on those stickers? I can't imagine a way they could compensate for the problem unless they started to use different  (thicker) stock.

I believe that the portion of the clamp that spans the bar on the top keeps the  mid section from flexing enought to crack, so I'm not sure how well the clamp itself has to fit. I also think the Road King uses the same two piece setup as our bikes.

FYI-Wild-1 has a couple of sets of the dual flat 575's in stock for those who want or need some additional reach. I was also able to locate a one piece clamp with recessed bolt holes which may lessen the need to file on the bolts.  It appears the bolt holes are recessed at least 1/4 of an inch at the rear mounting holes and more at the front. The CC part number is 26145.

I've got a 2" over H-D brake line and feel comfortable with doing everything except the brake line change over.  Presumably you purge the old fluid by opening the bleeder valve and pumping the lever until the fluid is gone.  I shouldn't have any difficulty re-filling and bleeding but any tips or shortcuts would be appreciated.  Bars should get here today.

Thanks
Dan

mobe:

I saw that thread earlier and was going to look at it before installation.  What exactly is the cast in spacer that you had ground off.  I have both the H-D clamp and the one from Custom Chrome and I can't figure out what you ground off.  The CC clamp came with little chrome caps to push into mounting bolt holes to hide them and it looks as if the depth is a little less than your "custom" clamp.  I'll know more this evening.

Thanks

mobe:

In looking at your photo's it appears that you routed the front brake line through the round hole with grommet in the fairing and the throttle cables where brake cable was originally routed ( at least on mine).  Is that what you were talking about when you say you had to reroute the throttle cables?

Dan, regarding the routing of the cables, I ran the throttle cables where the brake line used to be to keep them from binding. When they were in their stock position, ( not through the hole in the fairing, I noticed that at full left lock the idle cable, (the one that pulls the throttle off and activates the cruise disconnect switch),  was pulling out of its housing. So through experimentation I discovered that routing it through the fairing where the brake line used to go solved my problem.
Also the new brake line had some extra slack in it so rerouting it was no problem.

The one piece clamp that I used had a small ledge cast in to keep the clamp from rocking too far forward. Look at a heritage classic or fatboy handlebar clamp at the front and you will see what I am talking about. You will also need to relieve the part of the clamp that faces the switch housing, because it will interfere and not let the housing seat properly.....Mike

Changing out the bars was a marathon.  My hats off to those who did it in 4 hours.  I figure it took me 16 hours but it was the first time I removed the fairing and radio and I did several other thing at the same time.

The first problem I encountered was that I could not access the rear handle bar mounting bolts.  My fairing seemed to sit back futher than mobe's.  I was ready to pull out the dremel and shorten an allen head wrench when I decided to just pull the riser bolts and remove the risers, clamps and handle bar as a unit.  It occurred to me later that all I really needed to do was loosen the risers.  I never said I was a mechanic.

I used the one piece clamp I got from Custom Chrome, part number 26145, page 4.52 of their '05 catalog.  It is a direct bolt on; no machining necessary.  Cost is $15.24, less if ordered through a 20% off dealer.

I listened to the advice I got here and ordered the 2" over brake line.  Get one of those vacuum fluid excavators; makes bleeding the brakes fool proof.  My experience was similiar to mobe's in that my idle cable, at full left lock, was being pulled from its housing.  I solved the problem somewhat differently by re-routing the idle cable through the fairing support bracket rather than in front of it. That gave us (my wifes idea) the extra inch or two to we needed and allowed us to maintain the stock cable routing through the fairing.  As mobe said the throttle cable was fine.

While the fairing was off I installed Harleys high output horn.  It worked great while the outer fairing was off but was somewhat muted with it installed.  Its still better than stock by a good measure.

I also changed out the black control switches for chrome.  All I can say about that is that I'm sure glad I did it with the wiring harness on the bench rather than on the bike.  What a PIA.  I also installed a Tune Trapper and re-wired the passing lamps to stay on with the high beams.

The 575's are an improvement over stock, at least for me.  I have a Corbin solo and it moved me back so I had to reach for the stock bars.  The back rest is now more useable and slow speed manuvering seems much enhanced.  Hopefully comfort on longer rides will improve as well.
