Windshield fairing screw insert won't stay in
« on: September 29, 2006, 09:55:36 AM »

I did a search and found a lot of threads about the screws but nothing about loose insert(s).  Thanks 2Lane for the tip on the lower studs.  My bike has a windshield pouch that mounts on the center windshield screw and that insert is not stripped in the threads or does not twist in the fairing but it wants to pull straight out of the fairing after riding.  It takes a little effort to push back in with a wood handle (at least the last time I had the fairing off).  What would be best to keep the insert in the fairing (loctite, JB Weld)?   My center screw is a little longer than the outside screws-maybe that is the problem?  Or get rid of the bag, but can be useful?
Many thanks.

Two questions

A) are you talking about rubber wellnuts ?

B) what is it you're thanking Twolane for ? Something you can share ?

Thanks

Spiderman-
The threaded nut inserts across the top of the fairing for the windshield are brass and they fit into the fiberglass inner fairing.

When doing a search before asking, I saw where 2lane does not put the 2 screws back in the bottom between the forks as they are quite a PIA.

Well at lunch time I removed the outer fairing and the center insert had pulled out of the inner fairing.

Hey Boatman,

If your having problems with the jb-weld not working try this.

I believe you told me your in the trucking business. Search out a KW or Pete body guy, they have an epoxy to fix problems like these. I got a freind thats a KW body man and he fixes those t2000's all the time and the body panels are of the same material that HD uses on the batwing fairing and bags. I've seen him glue those panels together and he even helped a guy extend some HD bags with those extension pannels like on one of those fat baggers.

Had the same problem with the fairing on my 03.  Tried Super Glue, Liquid Steel, epoxy, etc.  Nothing worked for an extended period of time.  Finaly found a product called Gorilla Snot.  Worked great!  You can get it at Auto Zone, NAPA and others.
