Rough idle backfiring and extremely HOT!

Hello, I’ve came across something yesterday that has me baffled? My brothers bike 2005 Electra Glide. He said it was idling rough and backfiring out the throttle body and exhaust. Well when I went over to take a look at it he was right. I cleaned the sensors and inside the throttle body (dirty). Pulled the plugs and noticed a oily residue on the plugs. This is what’s got me worried though. When we started it up after the cleaning it got hot just 1 maybe 2 minutes after it started. I’m taking could feel heat radiating off it after a minute in 62 degree weather. I would imagine within 5 minutes the exhaust would’ve been cherry red. I know his bike has ran a lot warmer than mine since we’ve got them. Im going to check fuel pressure. Any advice or if anyone has ever ran across this would be very helpful. The only thing done to the bike is a 2 into 1 exhaust that’s been on it for years.

Possibility bad plug/s air body intake leak, injector malfunction, valve/ lifter sticking. I'd start with air leak and plugs.
I had once the same thing miss firing the odd time back fire thru the air body and exhaust,...changed the plugs cleared the issue

:2vrolijk_21: changed the plugs, wires and coil after I seen the oily carbon on the plugs. I know a leak in the throttle body would make one backfire so I’ll check that for sure. I wonder what is making it get so intensely hot? You can start this bike completely cold and within a minute it feels like it’s been on a hour long parade in 100 degree heat.

If you have an intake air leak, it makes the bike run lean. Running lean causes lousy idle and running hot, among other things. Make sure you check for air leaks at the manifold to head joints as well as the throttle body to manifold, and don't forget to make sure the rubber cap is still installed on the vacuum tube on top of the throttle body. Those have been known to blow off during backfires, and will create a large air leak. If all is well in the air leak category, time to do some in-depth diagnostics. Start by checking the diagnostic trouble codes stored in the ECM. There are instructions on the site detailing how you can do that without a scan tool, using just the bike and odometer screen.

Fuel pressure......2005, and 2006 were notorious for rubbing a hole into the fuel line in the tank. Loss of pressure will make the bike run lean, that will make it heat up. If you take the gas cap off, turn on the ignition, you will here gas squirting as the pump pressures up if there is a hole in the line. If the gas tank is full the squirting will be muffled.
