? Relocating
« on: February 19, 2006, 12:11:52 PM »

Looking for feedback [smiley=help.gif] Word is these will be my choices to relocate to Arlington, Texas; Fairfax, Kan.; Ft. Wayne, Ind.; Wilmington, Del., and Shreveport, La. Sorry, for u who don't know I work for Delphi and have 31 years but only 49 and not ready to retire. 40 % of my decision will come down to cost of living and 60 % to the riding in the area or location to other parts of the country to ride on long weekends and vacation. Off to do my homework on the cost of living

John, just in case you haven't looked it up yet Fairfax, KS is just Kansas City.  Not far off downtown and just across on the Kansas side of the line.  Probably 20 minutes or so south of the airport and the Harley plant.  Get outside Kansas City itself and you'll find significant amouts of flatness to ride in.

lugnut,

Coming from east cost to Arlington TX would be a huge cost of living difference, especially housing. You won't believe what your money can buy in housing. Probably so with KC too. In Arlington you are capable of riding year round. Don't know if your pay would suffer moving there, if they cut your pay then it wouldn't matter where you live. I know when I moved from Chicago down to Memphis I could buy twice the home for same price and all brick. Could never afford to move back North, and don't want too! ;D I ride year round with the exception to a few ice or snow falls per year. Good luck in your Quest and God Bless!

Got to tell you Shreveport is an incredible place. Now I am speaking of prior to Katrina, about 3 years ago. At that time the market was somewhat depressed and the cost of living was great. I was extremely impressed with the area but again that was before a million refugees washed up there from New Oleans. On the good side, I understand quite a few of the more affluent from New Orleans migrated there temporarily, not the bused types that are staying where they were bused and are just adding to the new places welfare rolls. (along with all that fine New Orleans crime)
Anyway, when I looked into opening another branch 3 years ago, I looked very hard at Shreveport and I really liked it.
Don't know if that is any help but you might want to take a look.

There's a new class of Navy ships (LPD-17) being built in Avondale LA  Good electronics techs can always find work in shipyards Ingalls Shipbuilding division of Northrupp Grumman is located in Pascagoula MS  Buddy of mine that rides an 03 Golden SERK lives in Moss Point MS (hand in glove to Pascagoula) and it is a nice area. Truth be told, IMHO the entire Redneck Riviera is a great place to live and work. Just a cryin shame the damage from the hurricanes, but the region will rebound. You can't keep those kind of folks down for long

Hey John....Sure like your 60/40 assessment of priorities with riding coming first.  Based upon that factor, it seems like Shreveport or Arlington would head for the top of the list.  Being a displaced Texan, I would probably head for Arlington, or somewhere SW of the Metroplex, but agree with MJZ that the Shreveport area is a real sleeper for value, some great folks and a ton of good riding about 10 months out of the year.  Louisiana catches a bad rap on a lot of issues, but that NW corner is quite different from the rest of the state.  Biggest financial difference that I see between the two is that TX has no state income tax and LA may be taking some tax hits to cover the Katrina expenses.  The Shreveport area, may not get hit as hard as some, however, on the county (parish) to county increases as a gaming client of mine there recently advised that their industries' cash infusion has created a revenue surplus in and around Shreveport.  As an example of the prices, I'm familiar with a recent move by one of the casino execs.  They bought about 6 miles N of the city and found 5 acres, near new country home 2600 sq ft and a nice steel barn/shop for 256k.

BTW...hope the relocation doesn't interfere with your trip to MV this year.  Enjoyed riding with you and sharing the carport on the rainy day sessions....

No disrespect to any one or area were you live. What I've learned so far is Wilmington, Del housing is expensive. Kansas is to flat. Ft. Wayne is, well, if I have to move I think it should be a little further south than that. La. and TX is what I always come back to. First thing is the heat. We hibernate in the winter up here and I guess you hibernate in the summer down there. Arlington has people and plenty of places to go. I worry about the riding there. Been to Amarillo and boy was that so flat.

John, any chance of the "Co" letting you take a pre-relocation trip to preview the areas?  We've got several great members from in and around the Metroplex area that might enjoy giving you the current inside scoop.  Based upon my years of living in that area, I found enjoyable riding West and Northwest of the area within about 15 mins of Arlington.  Some may disagree, but I never found Dallas traffic to be much fun.  ('Bout the only reason to ride that direction is a very cold brew and good conversation at Stroker's.)

Who ever said about getting more home for your money in Texas, boy u r wright. My 180,000 home here goes for only 130,000 in Texas. Now what about property taxes or any other cost. Taxes here are 4,500 for property and school taxes.
