Title: Remove Fairing Lowers w/speakers - is it safe?
Post by: r0de_runr on June 10, 2014, 10:57:54 PM
I live in South Central Texas, and lowers in the summertime is just not smart.  I do not believe the opinions that it moves more air over the heads.

I have the 2012 FLHXSE3 Street Glide with speakers in the lowers.  I cannot find any posts on how to remove the speaker in order to get to the two nuts that hold the front caps on.

Is it simply to remove the visible screws on the speaker grill?

And, will the impedance changes be harmful to my amp(s) or remaining speakers?

Remove the grill first.  4 screws. Along with the speaker. .the speaker unplugs.   Then look in there you will see 2 rubber plugs that hide the mounting nuts.   Pull out those plugs with a needle nose pliers.   Then you can get at the nuts with a 7/16 socket.  The outside cover will then come off.    Then remove the bottom clamp by removing the torx screw in the lower with a 1/2" open end wrench on the bottom.  You should have caps that   cover  the plug connections after you unplug them by the gas tank.  Really pretty easy.

I also live in a hot place and during summer I just remove the vents lower so I can keep my speakers. You can feel the difference when they are off.

I removed the vents also.  Hot where I live and I use an extended shifter.  My shoe would get caught in the vent when it was open.  I just removed it. Now I get air and keep my lowers.  :)

Take a look at the exploded diagram I've attached (click on it to enlarge).  Go into the glovebox area and find the nut, unscrew the nut and remove the carriage bolt from the bottom.  Don't lose all the other parts, you'll need them if you decide to reinstall the vent door.

'Not sure about the H-D stuff, but J&M has some plug-ins for the impedance level(s)
