Title: 2020 CVO Road Glide 131 crate engine
Post by: Robenrange on May 11, 2020, 08:51:41 AM
I just purchased a new 2020 CVO road glide and was going to order the 131 crate engine from Harley as opposed to doing the 117 to 131 kit. My question is what do you think I could sell the 117 engine with now miles for on eBay or wherever? I seen some used 110 engines bring $3500.  Just trying to offset some of the big cost.  Thanks

DON'T DO IT!!! Do the upgrade. Your motor has a serial number and it matches the frame and the rest of the drivetrain. The upgrade is very simple. You are not gaining anything buy replacing the entire motor.

After I ordered my 131 kit and found out it was back ordered I checked on the 131 crate engine. My dealer was taking my stock engine on trade and the OTD difference was less than a $500. There are several parts you have to buy with the crate that comes in the kit, like the head pipe. That alone is about $700. Biggest issue is it is not available in Granite to match the other parts of your bike.
Unlike the 120R and 120ST when you get the crate the dealer sends HD your VIN number and they stamp the engine to match your bike so it is just like it came that way from the factory.
Before you put your money down on the kit check availability. I ordered mine in mid-February and it took about 60 days to arrive. HD had over 1,500 back orders at one point.
Enjoy your new bike.

Wow very impressive that they will take your new 117 engine on trade.  What dealer was that and wonder if they will all offer that as then I won't have to worry about trying to sell it?

I’m not sure if my dealer would take your engine in on trade or not. I think it depends on a couple of things.
1 - how good of a customer are you, how well do they know you? I have been buying from them since 2006.
2 - do they have a buyer or need for your motor? They had someone that would take my motor but that was in early March

Do you really want to spend all of that money on a CVO and put in a motor that doesn’t match the transmission or other parts? Like I mentioned before the CVO bikes have Granite color motors and transmissions. The 131 crate does not come in Granite. I think putting in a motor that doesn’t match will really hurt the value long term.
It’s cheaper and you get the same performance from the 131 kit so why not go that way?

Where are you located? If you really decide to get the crate I’ll ask my dealer what they will do. They are located in NC.

Do the Kit, more cost effective.  But most important its available in Granite to match the rest of you drive train.  I would never buy a used CVO if the engine was not CVo only color or did not match the transmission.

But the way I understand it is even if I buy the Stage IV 117 to 131 the new replacement cylinders are black or chrome only no CVO granite color or am I wrong?

Note the “black granite”  listed as finish/color under the price.
