Cam change on M8
« on: February 07, 2020, 04:21:01 PM »

Thinking of changing my cam on my 2018 CVO limited.  I’ve never done this and have been watching some videos on how to do it. I’ve changed a full exhaust and done oil changes in past but this is a little more than that.  Doesn’t look extremely difficult but just time consuming having to pull the exhaust and floorboards. I also don’t have a cam bearing puller and would need to buy one. For those that have done this on your own do you wish woulda just let someone else do it. And also adjusting the push rods seems kinda a PIA.

If have average mechanical ability, you should be able to do it, I would recommend a factory shop manual and review it prior.

Think im gonna have an indy shop do it. Would need to take and have it tuned there anyways so may as well just let them do It all. I would need to purchase a cam bearing install tool & sprocket lock tool anyways. This shop did my motor upgrade on my 2015 RG so im famiiar with them..

Would it be a good decision to change the oil pump to latest one since gonna open it up anyways. Was thinking of using th S&S oil pump /cam plate combo. Found a good price on it. Someone told me to just change out the backing plate behind oil pump to latest one & roll with it. I Haven't experienced any sumping problems im aware of yet. But only have 2800 miles on it..

Do the 2020 pump (version 4 I believe) with the backing plate & seal.  There have not been any sumping issues that I'm aware of on 2020's with version 4 pumps (a different rotor setup) although I have heard of some S&S setups that have sumped.  The HD setup is a lot cheaper.  Also I have a new version 3 HD pump on the shelf if you need a $80 dollar paper weight.

Save your money and use then 2020 Harley Davidson oil pump, much less than S&S.  Many of your big name builders have gone from S&S to the 2020 HD one because it works very well and costs much less.  My build will have the HD 2020 oil pump.

Still undecided on what cam to use.  Shop owner is a friend of person at S&S and they suggested  the 475 cam. I’m looking at the Redshift 468 or the S&S 465 or 475 cam still. Prolly not much difference between any of them.

I just did a camchest upgrade and after much research chose to go with Zippers 468. Great cam but currently running on a canned map from Steve Cole (TTS), waiting for my guy to get back to work from winter slowdown/layoff to Dyno tune, but so far so good. Definitely sounds like a Harley at idle now and great pull throughout the RPM range.

I watched the cam shootout where they installed & dynoed  like 8 cams. The Andrews M464 actually was the best performing cam. The Redshift 468 and S&S 465 & 475 were rite there also in performance. Like I said earlier the shop owner is friends with an employee that's been with S&S for 20 years & he says the 475 cam would be best...

He only posted it today. He has been posting some great stuff about Zippers lately.

I'm stuck between the RS468 or the SS 475 cam. Sure there both great cams. Also trying to decide if I want to tackle this project myself or let someone else do the swap. I've never attempted anything like this but doesn't seem to difficult...
