2012 Goldwing released
« on: February 22, 2011, 07:55:31 PM »

Looking at the GL1800Riders.com forums, seems a lot of folks are not happy with waiting 3 years for a new Goldwing and then the "new" one is just a few goofy looking changes, the rear of the new saddle bags do not match the same ol tour pack.   Pisser, I was one of the guys looking to add a wing to my garage this year.   Before I get roasted for this, I just like bikes of pretty much any make.    On a side note, there is a lot of Harley bashing over on those forums, I don't get it....  hard core knocking of others for their likes and dislikes.

Good grief!  That's no lie!!  You can see everyone of those makes in that thing ...... well, struggling to see the Harley, but then again, it was just a BJ! :P

I guess it's not only Harley that's down on creativity these days. :(

I have heard that Honda still has some NEW 2010s in stock  ------- they will probably have some of these butt ugly NEW 2012s in 2021 still on the showroom floor. I have heard that even the "wingers" do not care for the new one.  :smilie_daumenneg:

...looks like Harley paint on the bags which I think is an improvement. We have a lot of new 09 and 10's around here for sale. Some dealers are throwing in a free Bushtec, 1.99% financing and 1K allowance for goodies.  Doc

Somebody mentioned the Ness or Victory influence. Perhaps Honda has made some of these design changes to (as Victory claims) allow the motorcycle to go down on the pavement without becoming a total loss   :nixweiss:

As to the H-D bashing thing, while your average metric owner will swear that the H-D riders bash them more, the truth is the metric riders all feel some subliminal need to justify their purchase which they do so by bashing H-D. I'm sure a good shrink could figure it out. Me ? I don't really care. While I like some of the metric cruisers. the Gold Wing is an atrocity so far as being a motorcycle. As I've said before, it sounds like a sewing machine and looks like a Honda Accord cut in 1/2. I buy and ride motorcycles for a lot more reasons than what the tech sheets and magazine writers have to say about them. It's like holistic medicine, you have to have mind and body working together. I can't wrap either around the GW. No offense to those that can, it's like why some H-D riders won't even think about owning a shark nose fairing or some won't own a bat wing or some don't want any fairing etc etc. Personal preference. I belong to a boat forum that is about the Mfg of wooden boats that I am currently restoring one of. Under my user name it says ? " I'd own a boat and a Harley even if there were no lakes nor roads in the world. "  That says it all for me

Just be happy that folks do have a choice when it comes to selecting a motorcycle.  Can you imagine what a Harley would cost if it was the only game in town?  When I first walked in a Harley dealership in 2002, they wanted $2000 to $3000 over MSRP, so I went and bought a Honda VTX1800 - more bike and less money.  It took me a while to appreciate the things that I now appreciate about Harleys.  I know that Harley's production numbers and the economy have changed things, but where would we be if there were no alternatives to HD?  Everyone would just have to bash V-Rods.  I think that things are better for all of us on two wheels when there are more folks on two wheels, so I'm good with whatever they want to ride.

Road Glide Ultra with a free Bushtec trailer and hitch, 1.99% financing and 1K credit for goodies could make me buy a new Harley...maybe. If Honda can do it Willie can do it.  Doc

 :2vrolijk_21: :2vrolijk_21:

It's a shame that so many people feel the need to bash other people's choices just to make themselves feel superior.  Last time I checked, appearance didn't make a bike run better, ride better, handle better, or do anything else better.  And best of all, when I'm actually riding a bike I can't see what it looks like anyway.  Why all the insecurity about what other people think about the appearance of their ride?  I especially like the "superior" attitude expressed by some folks who choose to ride much less reliable brands just because they supposedly look better.  Yeah, makes sitting on the side of the road waiting for the tow truck more fun if your broken bike "looks cool". ???

It would be nice if everyone could just grow up and respect those who make different choices.  Personally, I don't care if someone rides a crotch rocket, a dirt bike, a Goldwing, a Harley, a vintage Brit bike (Norton/Triumph/BSA/Royal Enfield, now those were motorcycles!), or even a Vespa scooter.  If they are out in the wind on two wheels, they're OK by me.

"Insecurity" might be a little harsh.  You're on a CVO site where looks are king, so we're bound to comment on the appearance .... of anything, not just a GW.  And you can't tell me that CVO's "run better, ride better, handle better, or do anything else better," can ya? :nixweiss:

I re-read all the posts and I do not see any bashing - most everyone who posted just thinks it is ugly.  I do and I also think the Victory Vision is ugly.  But I do not bash anyone who thinks otherwise and/or decides to ride or own one.  I do not think H-Ds are necessarily superior but part of what I enjoy about my motorcycle is its appearance and the new wing does not cut it for me.

Jerry,

I've said before and will say again; I don't care what someone rides or even who someone rides.  As long as they ride.  That I don't give a flying chit what another guy's bike is is separate and apart, however, from the simple fact that my personal opinion is that the new Wing (or the Vision, for that matter) are ugly bikes.  Other's my love them.  That's fine.  They may think mine are dog throw up on two wheels.  That's fine too.  It's just a subjective opinion on appearance.

It is not disrespect toward the bike's owner.  Not even to the bike itself for that matter.  It doesn't have to be "pretty" to be a good machine after all.  Hell, a lot of things I like aren't pretty.  Even you after that whiney diatribe that seemed to question intent, integrity or thoughtfulness just because I didn't like the looks of something.

Nice.  I loved my 2 Wings -- but cld not get the seating comfort right. // Out of the box power is fantastic on that 1800.  And smoothness??  HD has a long way to go.  But the CVO is getting them closer to GoldWing ride.  DOOFUS

X2    :2vrolijk_21:    IMO Harley is not a superior bike. I have owned 3 wings over the years. I had absolutely NO, I repeat, NO problems with any of them (can't say that about any of my Harleys). I have also owned Triumph's, one BSA, Suzuki's, and Yamaha's. I had many problems with the British bikes back in the 60s, but very few problems with the Japanese bikes. I have been riding now for 46 years, and over those years have ridden several brands, and still ride side by side with friends that have all different makes. I would never bash any of them and they do not bash me, even though we do mess with each other on a daily basis about each other's  bike. In the past 15 years, I have not been on anything except a Harley (even when mine is in the shop for repairs). I just choose to ride a Harley and put up with the problems associated with that ownership. IMO there is nothing that comes close to the feeling I get while riding my CVO, and IMO, nothing comes close to the looks of that machine. I go to Sturgis every year, and from what I see, there are alot of people that try to make their bikes look like a Harley, But I cannot remember seeing many people trying to make their bikes look like a wing. I do not -- and will never bash anyone for what they ride  --- but my opinion of the new wing is   --- fuuuuuuuuuuuugly --  and that is just my opinion  -- whatever that is worth.  And to those that think looks do not matter, why do they pay the extra price for the CVO? :stars:

Cant have anymore fun than bashing a Honda at a rally with a Big Sledge Hammer.
Usually raises a lot of money.

Never did care what anyone rides,I have bought and sold 3 wings in the past 3 years and made a lot of money off them, even had one with a two person sidecar.  GL1800 was the best, but still not a Harley.

I stick by my previous words the new wing is flat ugly and a disapointment to wingers world wide.  Many of my friends ride them and they hate the new look as well and are very disapointed in the HP staying the same while BMW continues to go up.

I love my CVO Springer but it really doesn't matter what you ride just as long as you ride.  Heck, its the same wind blowin' through my hair regardless of what I'm sitting on!

The 1987 1200 was the last Wing that looked like a motorcycle,   The release of the 1988 1500 looked like a two wheel refrigerator !!!!!

The 1987 1200 was the last Wing that looked like a motorcycle,
If you asked most people "What does a motorcycle look like?", they probably wouldn't pick any kind of touring bike.  I think my Fat Bob is a lot closer to what most folks would say that a motorcycle looks like than my Ultra Classic.  I really like the look of the original Gold Wings before they became touring bikes (and I did get to ride one back in the late 70s or early 80s), but a lot of folks probably don't even know that Gold Wings haven't always looked like the machines that they have become.  I think that my Triumph T100 is what a motorcycle is supposed to look like too because that's what I remember bikes looking like when I was a kid in the 60s.

...and the only bike company to show a sales increase and profit last year. I went to look at their touring bike recently and its evolving nicely, only thing left is adding cruise control and tourpack and it will rock...its already crazy quick and powerful. Doc

Don't you just love it when somebody starts a thread that is basically an opinion thread and then some people get all worked up because others actually state their opinions. I recall President George HW Bush catching flak for saying he hated broccoli even though he liked most vegetables. So here's the thing. I LOVE motorcycles, but a Gold Wing is broccoli in my book.

Well, I'm sorry if I ruffled some folk's feathers, but I saw this thread becoming just one more of those "bash anything that isn't a Harley" discussions and thought I'd speak my piece before it sank to the usual levels of ridiculousness.  Like bashing Honda's with a sledge hammer, if you know what I mean.

I've got no problem with other people expressing their honest opinions about visual attributes.  If all we want to talk about here is whether or not we like the appearance of the new Goldwing, fine.  I'll add my vote that the appearance does nothing for me, and also add my comment that it sure doesn't look like much of a change from the previous model.  If I had been holding off buying a new bike for the past two years in anticipation of a major change, and then saw this, I'd probably be upset just like many of those Goldwing riders.  On the other hand, at least Honda didn't just add some flat black paint, or strip off much of the trim, and call it an all new 2011.5 model.

Looks like a Victory screwed a BMW and then a Goldwing and for good measure gave a BJ to a Harley

ROFLMAO... I couldn't put my finger on what I thought it looked like, but that pretty much sums it up!

I had an '01, put 98K miles on it (still regret not being the one to roll it over 100K  :( ) and sold it in '05 Great bike, and if I could have as many bikes as I wanted, I'd own one... I'd be pretty pissed off if I was waiting for the "new" design and this is what I waited on... HUGE fail for Honda!

As far as the bike bashing... I used to be a good natured chit talked to my HD riding friends... but when it comes down to it, who gives a chit what you ride... as long as you ride.

When on the road, I wave at everyone...even scooters!  I get a kick waving to them most because of the enthusiastic (almost frantic) return waves...they're so happy to be acknowledged!

I believe many younger folks move on later to bigger motorcycles or older folks used to ride bigger bikes when they were younger.  It sets a good example either way.

Remember, only motorcyclists know why dogs stick their heads out car windows!

               Jerry,
You know man, I actually look forward to your posts more than anybody on the site. You are usually the one member who gets it right on things - -  especially tech issues. This just doesn't sound like you though dude. You of all people over the years have shown that riding a motorcycle is a visceral thing. It takes a lot more than a smooth running, problem free engine to make the experience enjoyable for many of us. I have a Japanese sports car. I've posted that the Mustang I'd been looking at when I bought my 1st Mitsu Spider (I'm on #2) wasn't even a close 2nd on interior, mechanicals etc. But that car is also a looker. A real looker. I know there's guys who swear by their Gold Wings, but you know something ? 99 out of 100 of em within 10 minutes of meeting them if you're (me) on a Harley will start in on why they didn't buy a Harley. That's the crux of my post. The Harley bashers over in metric land outnumber the Honda bashers on this side of the wall by 10 to 1. And given that you're one of the true greybeards of this site, one as I said that I look to for solid comment on many issues, I am surprised by you getting rather wound up on this subject. Now if the real Jerry has been abducted by Aliens then who do we pay ransom to so we can have you back.

When I was first looking to buy a Harley I thought I would look around at Honda's, After looking at all the bikes the beat looking bike in the store was a used Wide Glide. the salesman agreed with me. No one can copy the looks and ride of a Harley even though I had to put on new suspension to make it ride like a Touring bike should.     Billy

How you doin dude, enjoyin cvoharley ? Good, hope you don't mind if I pick a bit. Your last sentence - - - - did you buy the Wide Glide at the Honda dealership ? OR, did you go to a H-D dealership and buy one of the FL models ? Which after you got it home and rode it for awhile you decided to modify the stock suspension ?  Just curious what it was that you " had to put on new suspension to make it ride like a Touring bike should."

I did not buy the wide glide  I whet to HD and bought a Deuce which I loved. I then had problems with PM wheels Iordered and HD gave me a Road King to ride . I then saw the 07 CVO Roadking and 10 minutes latter  i was negotiating a new bike.  I have back problems so I was looknig to get the best suspension I can get .  HD tech can not believe how nice my bike handles. Wiht Traxion  Dynamics on the front and Bitubos on the back. Also raied the bike up to stock 13 inch rear and added 1 inch to front. Really can't tell the difference .    Billy
