Switching To Car Rear Tire?
« on: January 17, 2008, 11:10:44 AM »

This is a very interesting article, it seems to make some really good points.
I throwing this out here to see if anyone has vast knowledge of this:

I had a bias whitewall on my old panny chop....The point, cheaper, tougher.  Back then they were the only way to get "the look".  What the replacement cost on the these newfangled sticky soft radials?

That article was the best I've ever seen for mostly dispassionate and empirical discussion of the whole "car tire on a bike" thing.  Have seen/watched/snickered-at guys go off the deep end of both sides of this discussion.  That review did a nice job.  Thanks for putting it up MJ.

Nicely written article, and the guy does make his point...good to see a very convincing argument in favor of this.

Very interesting, I'm not to sure about the handling in a turn, smaller, sharper radius, harder compound. Someone try it and let us know!!!

My old panny chop was rigid, no front brake, drum rear and hand shifted.
Cornering?  The girdered front with stoopit rake made cornering an adventure, eff the rear tire!

The article does make you think about it...

What I was impressed with most was that he really had thought about Ernie. A great deal.

Have sat back and watched people go back and forth about this before.  More often with neither having actually done it.  Was just interesting to see a reasoned approach coupled with a moderately well travelled opinion on the topic.

Fortunately I don't think there's anything that would fit our bikes.  So I don't have to give it any more thought than admiring someone else's thought too :huepfenlol2: .

With our 3.50" wide wheel I think you are correct.  Guess you could do the whole swing arm changeover for the wide tire kit but you can buy an awful lot of motorcycle tires for what that mod would cost. :2vrolijk_21:

Not as good as your 'nana with one of those wide red stripe tires that were popular in the 60s.   ;D ;D
