Long Distance Underwear.
« on: March 14, 2014, 09:28:27 AM »

Hey all, I was wondering if there is a preferred style, brand, make of underwear for long days in the saddle.  My regular Fruit of the Loom's start to dig in and cause havoc after 300 miles or so.  :o   Was wondering about Bicycle Shorts under the jeans?  Any ideas.  Don't really want to use Jell packs on the seat or sheep skins. Cheers.

I swear by Under Armour.  I tried a pair of the LDC shorts, and wasn't impressed (and flat-out hated the horizontal fly).

Have the same problem with the tightie-whities...cut into the buttocks a bit.  Last long trip, I tried the boxer brief style of drawers and made a big difference.  Didn't go expensive as I wasn't sure this style would work but it helped out tremendously.  I tried Hanes, Fruit of the Loom and Joe Boxer brand.  I looked at the expensive long-distance brands but for the price difference, I couldn't justify not going with the regular brands (I'm sure others of our group will expand on the more expensive stuff).  However, I thought of the three I tried, I liked the fit of the Fruit o' da Loom brand boxer brief...seemed to stay in place better than the Hanes or Joe Boxer.

Good luck on however proceed but my opinion, start cheap first to see if it works for you.  I couldn't justify spending $10-$30 bucks for a pair of drawers and find out I didn't like 'em.

I swear by Under Armour...

Wore the Under Armour under regular Wranglers on my trip (July) to Texas and back... no complaints whatsoever.  I had the long version, just above the knee, and the material actually kept my upper leg cool too.

Best there is on a long hot day ride.   :jalapeno:

The original men's 9" long boxer brief from Under Armor; but yes they are $20.00 a pair. You don't skimp on the bike, why would you skimp on your comfort?    :nixweiss:

:2vrolijk_21: Agree on the UA 9" boxers.  Added benefit is they can be washed in the hotel sink and dry by morning.  Also wear the UA t shirts as a base layer in summer.  Wicking action keep you cool and dry on hot days.  Cotton briefs are a bad idea.  Cotton soaks up sweat and stays wet and sticks to your skin.  Also Harley sells a seat pad that work better than a sheep skin.  Keep your butt ventilated and comfortable on hot days.  Just don't use it in cold weather when you need the heated seat.

Bicycle shorts may feel a little strange if your not used to that type of short. A compression type short without the bicycle pad are nice. Compression helps some with circulation and may help keep your legs feeling better. I use a full length compression layer when skiing and believe it has helped reduce some of the soreness after a long day on the slopes and my legs feel "fresh" at the end of the day. 100% on the Harley ventilated seat pad foe hot days.       JoeS

I wear the UA daily and must have 25 pairs. But for the long trips I like the LDC better. Use one pair for two week trip. Put them on to ride and have a pair of UA to wear at the end of the day after a shower for a couple of hours before bed. ( I travel light)  Tried ExOfficio mesh but the seams came over my cheeks and after 12 hrs on the bike they cut into me and hurt. Just use the LDC now and love them.

isn't 25 pair of underwear a little extreme?  what you only do laundry once a month?   ::)

Thanks for the tip re. LDU products.  Since I started using UA I pack only 3 pair of shorts and three T's regardless of the length on the road.  I too am a fan of light packing.

The girlfriend and I just rode around 4500 miles in a little over 3 weeks. Up through arkansas back home to Louisiana then over to the hill country of texas and back home again. Both of us used the LDC on the long haul days and we both agree that these underwear make an amazingly unbelievable difference. They are a little pricey but man I guess the old saying is true....you get what you pay for.

I purchased LDcomfort underwear before my Sturgis trip and have to admit it is worth the price.  Most comfortable underwear I have used for long trips.  I thought I was happy with my under armour until I used this stuff. I highly recommend it.

No matter what you do, look up a product called Chafe Zone by Med Zone.  A great guy named Tony Harris showed it to me and I tried my best to get H-D to carry it.  They blew him off and it's now used by police, motocross, special forces, divers - tons of people who wear gear that rubs their skin.  If you ever talk to Tony, he is a great guy.  I have used this product and I absolutely 100% can vouch that it lives up to it's claims.

Also, I know =some guys who use bicycle shorts for long saddle days.

If $25 underwear causes you grief, skip this post and move on to the next reply.

I tried some Moto-Skiveez this summer on a 2000 mile adventure ride on my KTM 690r. Chaffing is not my issue; a skinny, boney ass is. These worked well and I comfortably recommend them. Think of them as bicycle shorts specifically designed for motorcycle riders. Depending on the motorcycle type and rider they position the padding differently to zero in on the pressure spots. I'm a big fan of the Deluth Trading Post drawers as well.

Just took a look at their website... interesting produuct... a few questions....

1. Are these worn in addition to other underwear?
2. If they are worn alone how easy/quick are they to wash? When traveling could they be washed in the sink at the end of a days ride and be dry/ready to wear the next morning? Don't plan to chit my pants but do like the feeling of a fresh/clean pair of skiveez after my morning shower. :D
3. Do they run true to size? And if they are worn over underwear do you need to go one size up?

These are worn instead of underwear.

They sure could be washed in a hotel sink but I never tried it. I got enough pairs to last for a week so normally the laundry is done at home.

Run true to size for me.

I'm reviving this thread for some clarification.

When (for the purpose of this thread) we talk about "comfort" what are we talking about exactly? It looks like, butt and sweat are the main points of concern. I don't have problems with that, but do have a problem with my junk getting wedged in the front of my pants when riding.

Within the last year, I've lost more than 50 lbs. The problem I have now is my junk won't stay in place when riding. When I move around in the saddle, the back part of the seat tends to slightly pull the back of my jeans up (I believe this is what is happening). This in turn pulls the front of my jeans down, along with the underwear. Resulting in my junk being pulled down and it gets all bunched up. I end up having to do several "package checks" to get it back where it's supposed to be. I've tried loose and tighter underwear, with little success from either. I've tried different styles: boxer, boxer briefs, whitey tighteys, seamless, bikini style, etc. None have made any noticeable difference. These were all regular off-the-shelf drawers from big box stores. I haven't tried any of the higher end solutions listed here but would like to find a solution.

If anyone has/had this problem and can recommend a solution, I'm willing to give it a try.

Anyone else have this issue and have any of these underwear solutions mentioned in this thread help that?

I used to be a "under Armour guy" until this fairly new product came out, and now it's my favourite for all around comfort.

http://www.mypakage.com/

Some Harley dealers have caught on and are now stocking them...

Being Canadian made and with our current CND$ slipping, should make them real attractive to those south of the 49th.  A $30.00 pair should only cost you boys $24.00us right now!

Regardless of the price, they are extremely comfortable on or off the bike, in any kind of weather and should "go the distance" for you..

I'm starting to feel a bit like Cosmo in an old Seinfeld episode!  ;D   "Not that there's anything wrong with that!"

OK - Here's another option. Thanks to this thread(!) I did some research online last year and found these which seemed to specifically address my issues:

https://www.saxxunderwear.com/us/saxx-innovation.html

Bought a few pairs and let's just say they are great and leave it that.  :-[

Admittedly a topic I have never discussed with anyone before! But since everyone is sharing so openly(!!) I figured I'd also add to the knowledge base.

Just ordered a pair of mypackage to compare and contrast.

The "MyPackage" drawers arrived Wednesday and I gave them a shot yesterday. I did a solo 250 mile run after work, and had none of the issues with junk adjustments during the whole trip. I'll try them out with a BSR today or this weekend and see how they do. Two up is when I experienced the most problem. I think I adjust my seating position more often with a BSR, than I do solo, and it's the constant  moving that jumbles my junk.

So far the boys are content. I'll let you know how it goes after this weekend. Thanks for the suggestion, it seems to be working great so far!

Oh and as an added bonus, they are super comfortable and quality made!

I tried them all through the years and nothing beats Motoskiviz. I use them for all type of riding and even on a 800 mile day it's a non event.

If you have not tried them you don't know what you are missing

Griz, thanks for the heads up on this.  I received my order from Mypakage on Wednesday.  I did not ride with them yesterday but did wear them at work where I'm at my desk and all over the place during the day.  They were very comfortable.  The seams around the buttock area (either side of the cheek) worry me a bit but it was not an issue yesterday.  And yes, the design does what the website claims concerning a gentleman's "equipment".  I am looking forward to trying them on the bike after a few hundred miles.

Actually I'm hoping they aren't that comfortable on the bike because I'm not used to spending $25 a whop for drawers..... ;D

Wore the Under Armour under regular Wranglers on my trip (July) to Texas and back... no complaints whatsoever.  I had the long version, just above the knee, and the material actually kept my upper leg cool too.

Another vote for under armour. They aren't exactly cheap but worth every penny.

I had a chance to use them this weekend riding solo and with a passenger and they worked great. No adjustment to my junk needed during my 400 mile + ride.

Thanks for the recommendation.

When I first started looking for underwear to go the distance I also wanted something for every day wear as well.

This is what I chose over 2 years ago and have been very pleased with with them on long or short rides.   I have ridden up to 1,000 miles a day and had zero issues. I have close to 20 pair.   I know they are inexpensive and for such made in China as probably 90% of the others are as well.  They have help up great, feel cool and in have to admit I like the feel  :o. Would not hesitate to recommend to anyone.

I find they really make a difference when riding, but now wear them all the time.  :2vrolijk_21:

Anonymous here! And as promised, I got my order of Mypackage delivered and tested it over this past weekend. It certainly is better than the other products I have tested (Duluth, Under Armor, etc.) but I have to say Saxx (who comes up with these product names?) has the edge as far as comfort. You'll be happy to know that I won't get into the details of why Saxx is better, let's just say it does a better job of doing what it's designed to do. The following commercial better expresses what I'm trying not to say.  ::)

Replace the product being discussed in that commercial with Saxx and you'll get the point! In other words it adds shaping not inches (unless adding inches is a secondary goal in which case Mypackage is the better choice). :-[

However, Saxx is 30% more expensive. Mypackage is certainly second best IMO based on personal experience and cheaper so not bad at all.

I find this thread "refreshing" LOL.  My GF gave me a hard time when I bought a pair of those compression, spandex, micro-fiber, silky touch, sport boxer briefs.  LOL.  I tried to explain to her that when I ride longer distances, my cotton boxer briefs would absorb sweat and start to stick to my jeans and then cause bunching all over the place.  So I remembered my riding shorts from my MX days, and tried some of those "fancy" underwear for a bit (see above).  Huge difference!!  I liked it so well, I replaced all of my underwear with this style!  They let my butt slide inside my jeans without bunching up, my junk stays put, and they actually wick away moisture.  She told me to "man up"!  I promptly replied, "I got your man right here"...gestures included..LOL but I ride comfortably all the time now.  AND recently, she took the advice of a lady rider friend, and got her a pair too!! LOL

I've got two 400+ mile rides wearing the Moto-Skivies.  Yes, they do make the ride more comfortable.  Things that used to feel constricted don't, and things that used to feel like they needed to be padded are.  But I don't like them overall.  You get off the bike every couple of hundred miles and probably walk around.  Off the bike those but pads feel like a load in the pants. I do not think there's a way to adjust them that would be comfortable while walking.  So I rate them 4 stars out of 5 on the bike but 1 star while off.  If I'm going to do another iron but ride or a turn and burn point A to B ride then I'll probably throw them on.  But if I'm doing a ride, sightsee, ride, eat, ride, sleep kind of day I'll stick with something else.

I had issues on and off the bike, but since trying these I threw away everything else in my dresser drawer:

Bonus, they appear to be cheaper than a lot of recommendations here.
I have tried the LDC shorts, they're pretty good but haven't had a need for them since switching to the Coolmax.

I checked out this thread because I knew you guys would deliver the laughs and you didn't disappoint!  I loved the 4 gals from Barrie HD.  Really nice to see clean humor where they don't take themselves too seriously.  I wish more American HD dealers would put out clever vids like that!

Seriously though, I've tried everything up to and including UnderArmor and wasn't thrilled with them too terribly much.  So I just bought two pairs of Terramar High Performance boxer briefs from Sierra Trading post.  Two pair were $28 delivered.  They are snug on the body, but not compression fit.  They just feel right.  I could see wearing these all day long at home.  On a 110 mile trip in 90 degree high humidity weather, they were pretty nice at keeping you feeling cooler and not too sweaty.  Don't know yet about the seam lines in them, though.  They aren't in the best of places, being right under the hip joints.  And as we know, the seam lines are where a lot of the discomfort starts.  Hey, at least now I have 2 more pair to go with the UA's for longer trips.

Couple weeks so ago was riding and had what became an uncomfortable day.  Don't know what the difference was but at the end of only 400 or so my ass hurt.  Sore the next day too.  Never remember a day quite like that.  Last weekend did 250 or so one day and noticed the beginning of the same thing.  Not sure why my ass suddenly got cranky.  Remembered this thread and ordered a set of the Moto Skiveez to try out.

Arrived today.  Now my ass just needs a day to try them out for 500 miles or so :drink:  .

$59.95 for a fancy pair of boxers?? WTF?   :nixweiss:

Somebody should make a pair of skivvies & sell them for $99.95.  Why?

Because there are people who would buy them.  Maybe they are already out there.  Not gonna do a search...nope....

I would say that the boys are one issue but the biggest one for me this time of the year is the heat and sweating. It sure does make things uncomfortable. Need something other than cotton. And now there seems to be a lot of expensive choices!

I know, it seems "nuts" doesn't it?  But for a one shot lark I'll give it a shot.  Likely wouldn't have picked this particular brand for the try but know someone who uses them and has for a couple years.  Says it really is a significant difference.

Think of it this way.  For every day you wear them you get to amortize the expense out by usage.  So if they really do make your ass feel better and you use them, say, 30 times a year your amortized expense is $2 per happy ass session per annum.  If someone told you otherwise that your ass could be happy 30 times this year for just $2 you'd try it too  :huepfenlol2: .

Nope, $2 for a happy ass would require penicillin or antibiotics a day or 2 later most likely.  Oh, you mean underwear not.....   :bananarock:

Yeah & for $100 would be only $4 per ride.  Or go commando for $0 per ride underwear cost.  Happiness for me is somewhere in between, closer to $0 than the other.  No plans to ride a stinky assed sheep, no matter what the per ride cost is.  See first sentence of response.  :bananarock:

Just got a pair of the SAXX in to try out. Very comfy to wear. Not sure about the hot part of the bike ride. Maybe test on the way to WVa.

I finally put the Moto Skiveez on the road yesterday.  Did so on the Road King as the Road Glide's saddle is so comfortable it wouldn't have been a fair test.  The solo on the Road King I could tell a difference on after three tanks or so.

Rode just over 450 yesterday.  Took a little while to get used to the skiveez when just walking around.  But that oddness faded.  Riding was ok though.  They did help.  Made the day noticeably more comfortable.  It was a hot sweaty day too.  All in all these shorts were definitely not the worst waste of money I've ever spent on a motorcycle; not even close  :2vrolijk_21: .

I admit I don't do the long 800-1000 mile days anymore back to back (or even without a little dread for what my ass will feel like after day one).  But three or four tank days with the stops at 150 miles still make for pretty comfortable days.  The play-day yesterday was a good day.  Rode about 150, stopped for fuel, stretched, drank a water, killed another ten minutes, rode another 150, stopped for an early afternoon lunch, flirted, struck out, had fun anyway, rode about 170 home, played with the dogs (not a euphemism).  All in all a good and easy day and home in plenty of time to bbq for dinner  :2vrolijk_21: :huepfenlol2: .

And it was all thanks to my new Moto Skivee......., ok, no, it wasn't really all thanks to the shorts.  But they did help a little  :coolblue: .

A good day all in all except for Miss Take.  Does wearing non HD brand underwear void your warranty?   :nixweiss:

My ass is well past the time and mileage limits for factory warranty.  It is way cute (as old asses go).  But out of warranty.  Alas(s), no ESP either.

Ok. Good information.  Thank you very much for not telling me about your crankshaft and Timken bearings and especially not your exhaust port.

At $60/pair & typically 4 underwear in the saddle bag for long trips, that equals about 6 cases or 72 beers worth of underwear in Beer Dollars.   :drink:  :drink:

And I don't wish to wash or recycle the beer so if I wear them enough and they are comfortable they might earn their keep?

Yes, was a first world problem. Back when I was drinking store bought beer at home instead of home brewing, Dogfishead 60 and others like Sierra Nevada ran $9-10 a 6 pack.  I blame a friend about 15 years ago that introduced me to Sierra Nevada Pale Ale.  My homebrew runs about $.50-.75 per 12 ounces.  I think if we had the metric system it would have been cheaper.  :nixweiss:

Refuse to divulge the price of my underwear though.  :huepfenlol2:

Just got back from Sturgis (3,652 miles) and gotta say the Moto Skivees were great. I ride an 05 SEEG with the original seat and those of you that have (or had) one, know that seat isn't made for long rides. I experienced none of the butt or back pains I normally had when riding long distances in years past. Only down side is they are a little warm on hot days (5 days were over 100 degrees), but the comfort factor offset the heat issue. They do feel a little funky when you first put them on, but within a few minutes that went away for me. I plan to buy at least a couple more pair as I think they are well worth the money. :) :) :)
