I see a lot of folks stick with the stock breather and upgrade other things; cams, exhaust, etc. In general it doesn't seem to be a huge upgrade concern for most people. I personally don't have complaints with it.

Very good.  Years ago, Fullsac (if memory serves) tested it against the heavy breather. The only difference was at wide open throttle and high rpm and that was minimal.  If you search you might find the thread.

I just did the 117 kit and left it on I had to buy new back plate for the 58mm intake but have no problem. The aftermarket ones stick out to far uncomfortable for me. Just my .02.

Before H-D started installing the Ventilator or Heavy Breather air cleaners on CVO's, they came with the stock plastic airbox and small panel type filter element.  In those days the first modification was changing to the round SE air cleaner inside the stock outer cover, and the exhaust system.  Now with the Ventilator being standard, you already have the equivalent (or actually better) of what we used to do on the earlier models.

There are a lot of "claims" from people trying to sell you different air cleaners, but little to no facts to back up their claims.  If you plan to do more than just Stage I mods and really think you need to address the air cleaner, talk to some of the honest dyno tuners on the site about how much, if any, improvement you might see by changing the air cleaner.  You might be surprised.  And don't forget the downsides of hanging a bigger filter on the end of the TB; having your leg rub all day on a wider air cleaner can get old really fast.

The AC will support anything that the stock TB and heads can take.  If you are looking to hit the 120 hp mark.  The AC will also need to be addressed.  It has it's limitations, but a decent filter if used with in it's limitations.

Does anyone know if the OEM ventilator air cleaner is considered a "high flow" or "stage 1"?  If so, there really isn't a point in changing it out besides for looks right?  I use to have the heavy breather on my softail and I loved the aggressive look.  I don't think it would fit on twin cooled engines though....

A buddy of mine just tried the compact heavy breather on his. While it physically fit and cleared the lower (by 1/8th inch), as soon as the bike was running, it rubbed. As far as the stage one, that was my understanding of the ventilator, but I could be wrong.

he can slide the filter element back just a tad.  I have the heavy breather on mine with the compact filter and lowers and have no issues with rubbing whatsoever.

We bore the stock backing plate for the 58 and larger t/b . Simple to do and very cost effective .
