Title: Daytona Bike Week Ticket Fine
Post by: 911Hawk on March 10, 2010, 07:47:28 PM
A friend attended Daytona Bike week and came back with a huge ticket. He had a vertical plate tail light assembly, got pulled and was given a $1141.00 pay on the spot ticket.  >:( :'(  NC just passed the same law but, only $100.00. That would suck big time. Time to check state laws before crossing the borders. Ride safe!

Without even questioning the legitimacy unadjudicated on-demand punishments just the fact of a locality attempting to enforce the statute would be enough for me to never set foot in the place.

It never changes there.
I got a ticket in the early 70's for handle bars too high.
I had drag bars on 4" risers!
Everyone else at that time had apes! Go figure!
I think my fine was $50 then (probably about $5000 in today's dollars!)

He stated, I will not attend another rally in FL! 2nd violation is $2500, 3rd is $5000 and lose your motorcycle endorsement for 10 years. :o

The very brief history on this ticket is the legislation was crafted to heavily fine the Rice Rockets that don't display any tag, display their tag under there rear fender, make sure it is illegible (dirt)---etc.

The law's concept was extended to include tags mounted sidways because they too were illegible.

When I brought this issue up as a cautionary warning prior to Biketoberfest, I was advised that the rotated tag was now excluded from the law criteria. I mention this because if I were your friend I would contest the ticket and get my money back since the fine is both incorrect and doesn't apply.

He may be able to hire a local attorney to do the job and not have to appear.

I hope he prevails.

I live in Florida and that law no longer applies. Govenor Charlie Christ changed it last year. Tell your friend to call the clerk of courts office located on the ticket and talk with them. He should not have been fined !!!!

The local attorney will probably cost him about $1141.00......... :nixweiss:

Got pulled over in 1969 for loud pipes in Kettering Ohio, I asked the officer what did he use to determine my pipes exceeded their noise ordnance, he pointed to his ears, $85.00 and court costs, One hell of a lot of money for a kid making $1.25 per hour.  Steered clear of Kettering form then on.  5 years later the judge who imposed the fine was disbarred for illegal activities, imagine that.

I was one of the ones with the apes.....and yes, I did get 'arrested', not just a ticket.  Had to post 'bail'.  It later eased up for many years and I still consider it not abusive there during bike week as it once was........you have to really offend to get a ticket now (except in this NC rider's case.  He should really fight to get his $$$ returned.  JMHO).  spyder
