So Harley is saying size does matter.

25% more flow rate.  Price of the MKE-8 oil filter up 25% from standard filter?  50%?

M8 engine has been out for 4 model years, just a few months from the 2021 5th year model & NOW HD figures out a need for a new higher capacity oil filter?  Doesn't exactly inspire a vote of confidence - if it's really needed.

I sure would like to know what brought this about.  Issues with other areas of the oiling system because of to many changes to the oil pumps (4 versions) maybe?  And if so, what was the actual reason.  Well at least its safe to assume they didn't give us extra filtering media cause they had so much laying around and just wanted to get rid of it!

Says P&A ordering availability 3/16 or so. Called my guy at the local HD parts counter for a price out of curiosity and part number doesn't show up in the system yet.  :nixweiss:

Not any more.

Reminds me of the old MoCo oil position & attitude.  MoCo sells no synthetic oil - no not needed, dino oil is fine, it's better blah blah blah.  A few years later the MoCo decides to sell synthetic oil.  After that they say - oh yeah synthetic is better & BTW it's ok for those old bikes too even though a few years ago we said dino oil was better.

It's almost like the MoCo is run by marketing mercenaries who have no absolute clue about motorcycles except the part about trying to squeeze every possible dollar of profit they can from those who own them by arbitrarily changing fluids types and parts based on what they sell, when they decide to sell it.

Up until very recently both used the exact same oil filter in production.  M8 bikes being built right now supposedly have the new longer filter.  I say supposedly because Harley has a very poor history of controlling running changes in production (as evidenced by the many re-recalls of things like hydraulic clutch issues, saddlebag mount issues, etc.).  For those who already bought a bunch of the "old" filters to have on hand, there is no reason to toss them or sell them to a buddy with a Twin Cam.  Use of the shorter filter WILL NOT affect performance or warranty on your M8.  Since H-D has decided to not be transparent (gee, that's a first) and tell you what their real reason is for the change, I wouldn't spend more than two seconds worrying about it or pondering their motives.  I think we all know by now their motives rarely include what's best for the customer.

I was more thinking of using the new larger filter on the Twin Cam, but then I remember that there's the cam position sensor in the way.

You’re right, but soon to be released...”The High Performance Screamin’ Eagle Cam Position Sensor Relocation Kit.”  $499 and requires five hours of shop labor.

Stopped at Texas Harley here in the Mid Cities. Parts guys had no idea what I was talking about. They tried to look it up under the "whats new" section of HD website. It did not show up there, so they looked at me like I was crazy. So I said "google it". Low and behold, there it was, on the HD website. Things that make you go hmmmmm. The salesmen look like used car salesmen and the parts department has no clue. I miss the old days when the people that worked at a dealership actually rode and wrenched.

I am now stepping down off my soapbox and turning it over to the next person....

There is a new M8 oil filter

New higher volume pump. New higher volume filter. Not coincidental.

Great picture of you and your beautiful wife Chuck!

Remember the dealers and sales people also denied the problems with the new 110 motors for quite awhile.

Harley should be advertising like crazy right now. What better way to travel and maintain social distancing than on a motorcycle.

Put on 200 this afternoon in WI - round trip La Crosse to Richland Center on the backroads, plus a couple detours. Had to check on a job site. Kinda. Not really.

Didn’t get close to a soul...

Not surprised.  I told my dealer about it on March 13th asking them to order but still not here.

Appears this new filter was "Not Ready for Prime Time".

Love it, was a huge fan of the original "Not ready for prime time players" Starting in 75 on Saturday Night Live.

Back to your regularly scheduled programming, I just picked up another K&N 171 oil filter and called it good for my recent oil change.

Not on the HD website.  Maybe check with a local dealer & give them the part #?

If you find out would be interested to know.  Still have an old KN filter or 2 I plan to use first.

They are available, but out of stock. I stopped at 3 dealers last week and no one had one. One dealer said there was not one at any dealer in the country.

Gee, I'm shocked, I tell ya

Just shocked!

It would help if dealers employed people who actually ride motorcycles

Too bad they didn't totally redesign the oil filtration system to include a vertically mounted oil filter.  THAT would have been helpful and useful, unlike this half inch length increase.  Still ticks me off every time I change oil and have to sop up the oil that runs out when you unscrew the filter.  After trying purchased and homemade devices to catch the oil, none of which worked really well, now I just stuff disposable paper shop rags in the area, poke a hole in the end of the filter to drain as much oil as I can from the filter into my homemade catch device (2 liter soda bottle), then unscrew the filter and let the shop rag catch the oil sitting in the mount and top of the filter.

Best oil change aid I've found is disposable baby diapers (preferably unused).  Almost like they were made for hot oil.

Puppy pee-pee pads work well too.  Absorbent on one side and leakproof on the other.  Place it under the filter and the pad absorbs all the oil.  I don’t think anyone would mind, that on the next engine iteration, if HD placed the oil filter under the engine.  Yeah, I know...heresy.

Oil filter location engineered by someone that changed their own oil in a bike & knew what would make the most sense?  That would be a radical idea for Harley. Not likely...no it's impossible.

I just had the 25K service on my bike.  It got the old filter.  I forgot to ask for the new filter, and my guess is dealers want to use up old inventory.  Not sure if they have the new one in stock yet.

Yeah I'm kinda surprised myself that mother Harley didn't charge more for the new improved oil filter.  Maybe they figured us cheap azz M8 owners wouldn't spring for an increase in price and would continue to use the older style filer thereby increasing their warranty costs for failed motors, lol.
