Title: Get ready. severe crowd restrictions coming for next 2 weeks.
Post by: kojak on March 15, 2020, 04:46:59 PM
Since the federal govt seems to be behind the curveball of coronavirus spread, states are taking the lead. State of Illinois just closed all bars and restaurants effective tomorrow except for takeout food. 20+states have closed all public schools for at least 3 weeks. I believe this will keep accelerating. This disease doesn't care if you are liberal or conservative, stop listening to the bs and take this seriously. If we all act responsibly, we can get past this quicker. Just as an example, there are a total of 600 total icu beds in the entire state of ny. Right now, 60 of them (10% of all) are taken up by coronavirus patients. Imagine what it will be like in another 3 weeks. This is the time to be an alarmist and be wrong rather than be  complacent and be wrong.

It seems odd that New State has over 57,000 hospital beds and only 600 ICU beds? I would think NYC alone would have more than that with a city population of 8 million.

Their governor reported that number.

I found this. This seems more realistic.

New York has approximately 53,000 hospital beds, and about 19,000 are unfilled as of Friday.

The state has just more than 3,000 intensive care beds, according to numbers released by New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo.

Unfortunately it will take such drastic actions by authorities because we cannot depend on the average American to just do the right things voluntarily.  Those of us in the higher risk category cannot depend on the majority to do the right things, so we need to isolate ourselves to some extent to try to avoid all of those "who's afraid of a little virus, I'll do what I want" folks and especially the folks who know they are sick but still go to work or to public venues where they spread their diseases far and wide.  It might get a bit boring to stay home most of the time, but it's not something that bothers me.  Catch up on my reading, play some games, finally get a pass from the Mrs. to not go to the gym, tinker on various projects around the house, take some naps; I'm a simple man and the simple pleasures are all I need.  Someone please wake me up when it's over.

Self-awareness and self-protection can only go so far though Jerry.  Even though regular animal testing is already being skipped in a vaccine development for this virus a vaccine will still take longer than we can avoid people, surfaces, etc.  All the short term isolations and quarantines will (hopefully) serve the goal of rolling out the exposures (and the concomitant gaining of natural immunities) to a pace that doesn't overwhelm transport, medical, and other systems.  It's less scary if it runs through the population in 18 months instead of six.  I'm an old(er) fart now also.  Not looking forward to eventually making my acquaintance with the bug.  Somewhere, somewhen, and from somewho it's going to happen though.  Fortunately I've got toilet paper (so I should be ok).

:2vrolijk_21:   Same here Don, but if things get dragged out beyond my supply of toilet paper I can use newspaper (I'm one of those people who still gets a newspaper delivered).  I'm often tempted to use it for TP anyway after reading what they pass off as news.

I can't help but compare the current situation to the 2009 pandemic often called Swine Flu.  That one dragged out for a year, about 12,000 Americans died from it, and yet the government at that time did very little.  Nothing was shut down, people still did all the things people do, and the media didn't constantly try to promote panic.  I don't remember changing my normal routine at all back then.

Here's hoping they have overblown the whole thing, but I still think I will take this one much more seriously.  I'm no longer a middle aged whippersnapper, now I'm officially an old coot.

Jerry ;)

CDC now recommending everything stays closed for 8 weeks (minimum).  Every day a new recommendation.  I'm sure it'll be something different in a few days.  Hope government takes care of the people and businesses who cannot work/operate and will ultimately have no income during this time.

So with everything closing and local companies telling some people to work from home, what about the ones who can't? I am a local truck driver and I can't work from home nor am I going to burn all my vacation to stay home. So if the government, local or federal, telling people to stay home does that mean I don't have to pay my bills? Is the government going to tell my employer they have to pay me for however long they tell me to stay home or let me collect unemployment? Even with this going on I doubt the bank will let me skip paying my mortgage, or let me skip making the car payment or the electric company giving a pass.

Some folks would say that's welfare and socialism. They would say that another's lack of preparation does not mean their tax dollars should subsidize them just because they're "going through a difficult time".

It's not the governments responsibility to take care of you.  If you do not have enough money save to go a couple of weeks not working, then you should not have toys like a Harley, especially not a CVO.  The government recommends 6 months of your salary in savings for emergencies.

I guess I'm in the minority here, as I think this is a huge over reaction and will hurt the economy massively.

so we have 61 coronavirus deaths in the USA as of this AM.  Very small number

So far 22,000 flu deaths in 2019.  Why the panic?

2017-2018 flu season 61,00 deaths.

2018-2019 flu season 34,157 deaths

These numbers come from the CDC.

I am a high risk individual due to receiving Chemotherapy treatment.  My Oncologist said nothing about coronavirus and quarantining myself.  He basically said, keep my hands clean, keep my hands away from my face and stay away from any one coughing.  Not one word about staying out of public places.

I can help but believe this is politically motivated.  Reason is we have had many viruses over the past 20 years, they have all killed way more people but there was no mass hysteria and no panic, heck hardly in the news until over 10,000 deaths in the USA.

I tend to agree, but then I look at how fast the numbers have climbed in places like China and Italy.  It certainly seems this particular virus spreads faster than others I'm more familiar with, and thus the push by the CDC and other "experts" to start getting people to change their habits early on in the process, before it becomes a runaway freight train.  These days it's hard to tell if government or so-called experts (everyone seems to be an expert these days, including teenagers from Sweden) are telling us the truth or just telling us what they want us to hear in furtherance of an agenda.  I think in this situation the "experts" understand the true nature of our society and know that a huge percentage of the populace is going to blow this off and continue to do all the risky stuff that will allow this virus to spread rapidly.  So far a very large number of people are still attending large social functions, even those who are currently ill with colds and flu.  That is one reason we have so many flu related deaths in this country, people refuse to stay home and away from other people when they are contagious.  Hell, I think back over my career and realize I was one of those people.  Staying home every time I got the flu or a cold was not an option, and I dragged myself to work no matter what.  It was expected by higher management, and if you wanted to keep your job you knew what you had to do.  Perhaps it will take a widespread epidemic to finally change that mindset.

As Kevin noted, not everyone can do their jobs from home.  If every person in jobs that require a physical presence stays home, how to we get food and medicine delivered?  How do we get new products produced?  How does the economy not collapse?  These are all important things that need serious attention at the highest levels, and not just after a crisis hits.  It would be much easier if we lived in a dictatorship I suppose, just do what you're told.  However, short of martial law and troops in the streets, people in this country will continue to do what they please regardless of the risk to themselves and others.  One of the prices we pay to live in a democracy I suppose.

I don't have the answers, just observations, opinions, and questions.

Jerry

Restricting international travel, closing borders, etc, are functions of the federal govt.  Closing Local entities like schools, restaurants, etc, are best left to state & local officials.  Painting everything with a federal brush wouldn’t serve us well...what’s needed in NYC is different than N. Dakota or Alaska.  I don't see our fed govt behind behind the curve on anything.  I can’t name another country I’d rather be in during a pandemic.

This was at Oak Ridge Starbucks this morning.  You can come in to pick up your tasty beverage, just not stick around and talk about it.

Are we being ridiculous? Only time will tell HOWEVER, we really did nothing during H1N1 and it infected and killed hundreds of thousands world wide.  As a safety and health professional, I do believe prevention works.  As the doctor told his patient that accidentally swallowed his false teeth, "this too shall pass"...

One of the biggest difference between this and the flu is that we have flu shots available every year to help fight it off. We have CDC staff in place regularly working on the strains of flu and studying it and coming up with inoculations. Every year the "main stream media spins hysteria with reports of a new and powerful strain of flu" and we roll our eyes. Last year I got a flu shot at Target for $5.00 and I didn't get the flu. Why, because we had people in place working year round on it. But this Corona virus is something new and we are so far behind the curve on it that all they can do is tell us to wash our hands and not touch our faces. We are today, where Italy was just weeks ago. All we are doing is sending thoughts and prayers with the hopes that we don't become Italy over night.

And not everybody has 6 months of funds saved up. If you do, that's great. I'm glad you and your money are doing well. However the unemployed coal miners waiting for the promise that "big beautiful coal is coming back" don't have the luxury of 6 months of savings. The farmers who have been hurt in a trade war with China have used up all their savings. And not everyone can "work from home".

As for keeping politics out, that's not gonna happen. Leadership had a chance to do something early and failed. It's not that this "sprung outta nowhere", we've seen this on the horizon for a long time. But when all one cares about is "yeah, but how's market doing?" to the risk of everything else. Well then this happens and suddenly we go from "it's going away" to "national emergency".

I said this before, we had a Pandemic Division in place at the CDC specifically for this type of fast spreading virus. But since it was created by a political rival, the division was cut and the doctors and scientists were fired like hotel and casino house keeping staff.

Everyone bitches about lack of toilet paper, drinking water and draconian travel restrictions. No one wants to take US citizens in. Step back for a second and look at the big picture. Through it's ignorance and ineptitude the leadership of this nation just turned us into a "$hithole country".

But I could be wrong.
