Here we go! Fuel Moto 128" upgrade
« on: May 25, 2021, 06:04:18 PM »

So I purchased a 128" 10:75.1 kit from Fuel Moto along with all the gaskets and seals and had Paul customize a K&N Ventiator A/C fpr me so that I can utilize the 64mm opening. I have already done the cam chest upgrade to all S&S plus the RS468 cam along with a set of heavy duty clutch springs from AIM. I purchased a slightly used Stage IV kit from one of the members here and I'm going to re-use the CNC heads (after having them decked and fully checked out) and 64mm throttle body, intake and 5.5 injectors from the kit. I already have the complete Fulsac setup including 2" baffles and TTS and I'm throwing a new set of Fueling lifters in for good measure since I have well over 20k on the S&S's.

I just dropped my bike off this morning for Thursday's appointment so I'm pretty pumped. It is supposed to be completed this Saturday with a break in tune so I can get some miles on it and the weather is expected to be really nice here this weekend.

Fingers crossed!

Update;

Well....as it turns out the guys needed more parts, intake seals, new valve springs, and so on, and they FINALLY arrived today. They can get me in on the 17th of June BUT my dyno appointment with Nel's 2 Wheel Dyno Works (supposedly the best around for TTS) is on June 16th, so obviously that wouldn't work. I called to reschedule and the next availability for the dyno work is July 15th! So I rescheduled my build for July 7th.

Hurry up and wait!!

Sounds like a real good build.

I hope it turns the dyno numbers you want.

Sorry to hear you have to wait longer than expected. Sounds like a great set up, I have a similar FM 128 build but using stock heads and woods cam. Bike runs better than stock and highway MPG is 42-44. FYI, have the builder follow the FM break in procedure. The bike will be ready to ride when you pick it up. No need to wait 500-1,000 miles to enjoy it.
Looking forward to seeing the #s and hearing your impression of the build.

Wow 42-44 MPG? That's awesome. That's the one thing I thought that I would really be giving up is fuel economy.

Fuel Moto break in procedure? Not sure what that is. Is there an instruction sheet in the box that has secrets that an experienced builder would not be familiar with?

Thanks a ton for the input Mofo!

I did a 2,200 mile trip to Panama City FL for bike week. I calculated the fuel mileage at each stop. Mileage ran from a high of 49 (1 tank all interstate) to a low of 31 (1 tank sitting in traffic and having fun with the throttle in town), overall for the trip 42.5 mpg.

Fuel Moto break-in process, I would call them for specifics but here is the general information. They also provided really good information about maintenance intervals.

Before the tank or plugs are installed, cycle the motor 3 times 10 seconds each. Oil light should go off showing you have oil pressure.

Install tank and plugs. Start motor and let it run until the temperature reaches 165 degrees. Shut it down and let it cool. Repeat two additional times.

Put the bike on the dyno with 10-12% load on the drum. Let it run between 2,600-2,800 RPMs for 30-45 minutes.
Bike is then ready to go... FM provided a canned tune for my bike so it has not been tuned but I wanted a baseline run. Came in at 128/148 and runs really well. I was thinking about having it tuned but based on the performance, fuel economy I think I’ll leave it alone.
It’s a little light in HP compared to some similar builds I’ve seen but it has the H-D 64mm throttle body and manifold because FM was out of the ward manifold when mine was built. Also these numbers are not using the FM dyno and we all know each dyno is a little different.

I dropped my bike off today for tomorrows appointment. Hopefully I can pick it back up on Friday. I'll do a few heat cycles and try and wait for my dyno appt. next Thursday before putting any real miles on it. Obviously I don't have a lot of faith in their dyno guy, at least as far as TTS tuning experience goes, but lots in the tech.
Nothing is ever easy in my world!  :drummer:

Got my baby back yesterday! I was told the tune is a "get you buy until you take it to your tuner next week" so they only put .5 miles on it but it basically runs ok. I took it out for about a 15 mile heat cycle run yesterday, varying rpm's up to about 3500. I'll do a couple more between now and Thursday (dyno day) to get things broken in.
On another note the unrelenting 2900 rpm pinging I'd been dealing with forever seemed to be caused by an inordinate amount of carbon on top of the pistons due to oil consumption, as a few of the builders on here mentioned. A few months back I rerouted the head breathers OUT of the throttle body, so hopefully this along with new cylinders, rings and pistons does the trick. Nothing appeared to be defective or broken upon inspection.

The bike now has just over 49K on it and they say the bottom end is very strong and now the top end is brand new including having the used CNC HD heads gone through, including being decked, new valve springs, guide seals and cleaned up.

Today was the day to get my bike dyno tuned. I used Nell's 2 Wheel Dynoworks in Kirkland Wa. for the 1st time. He is no stranger to the TTS tuner system and supposedly has no issues using it. Everything went really well and I ended up with 126 HP and 147 Lb Ft of torque. Exactly in the realm of what I was expecting. When he was done he said to go home and change my oil and that the break in would then be complete.
He uses STD on all of his settings instead of the SAE that I'm used to seeing. When I questioned him about that, he explained that since we are AT sea level, here in Seattle, as opposed to 1000' or better above and our average temp is closer to 70 degrees than 80 that using the STD setting is more accurate. First I've heard of that but he's the man so no argument here.
He said that my combination of components (which I listed above) was really well put together so the job was a fairly easy one that should last a good long time with no issues. That made me feel pretty good.

The blue lines are from the tune I was sent home with from the shop.

Here is the chart;

Nells also did a final dyno run with the A/C off and found that I only lost 2 HP at above 5000 RPM's so I'm more than happy with that!

Here is a pic of my oil plug from today after all was said and done, looks great, no filings;

Nice!
Part of the build process is to do your homework and use a proven combination of parts.
Talk to a builder who has done many builds with what you are looking for. Follow their advice and expect similar results.

I followed advice from a builder who has done many big, high HP builds BUT knows how I ride and suggested a combination of parts the would fit my needs. He doesn’t do motor builds as a business but is a straight shooter.
I have a local machinist that does ALL my machine work.
A friend turned me on to a guy that does r&d dyno work for other companies and I was fortunate to have him tune for me.
Proper parts selection, good service from experts, a little more difficult than just dropping the bike off at the dealer but I believe a better product in the end. JMHO, of course but I’m happy with the outcome.

I’ve got over 5000 miles on my latest motor and smile every time I go for a ride!
THATS what it’s all about!
