Best way to time an evo 1340
« on: January 26, 2010, 10:23:17 PM »

Comments please.... Who has reported success by timing a 1340 evo with a timing light vs timing by ear and performance. Guess my question is: Which method would you use on your bike and why.

Hope to see a few comments. Thanks in advance.

I am far from a Harley mechanic, but you mention you wanted a "few" comments.

I don't have a timing light so when I changed the ignition on the 113 evo, I put it back in about the same position, afterwards I rotated slightly until it started to ping and then backed it off until the pinging disappeared. It was very time consuming. Later, when it was on the dyno, the tuner advanced it again to pick up about 2 hp but while riding two (500+ lbs) up it started to ping under load, so I put it back again. The 2 hp gain was not worth it to me. I think using the timing light is best and will save time, but fine tuning for your riding conditions is important too, I did  enjoy a good dyno report but real life performance is more important to me.

Stock or aftermarket ignition? I used to run a Crane HI4 and it had a led for static timing. That's all I ever did. Set it once rode it 40k miles without a single ignition related problem. Most of the aftermarket ignitions have a static methoed with a led or you use a meter. I think a timing light is allot of hassle! JMHO  :nixweiss:

I used a timing light (stock ignition?) with a "wiper" tube in the hole, cuts down on oil mist.
THEN, I advanced it just short of pinging when I pull a load up the grade. Got the best results at about 4 degrees advanced.
Just my combo remember, with a 27 cam and open exhaust and intake.
This works for me at sea level and 91 octane.
