Wheel Bearing Failure

Posted in general due to safety.
2014 CVO Limited 29k miles
Front ABS bearing went bad. Could.hear it with brake calipers pulled off. Once out it was rough spinning.

2010 Limited crapped at same milage.

Put tires on 1500 miles ago and were fine.

Going to check rear in a few days. Only pulled wheel to remove forks. Going with Pro Action front and rear (will post that in Suspension when done)  but wanted to give a heads up. Got a 5600 mile Pittsburgh to California trip in two weeks. Usually don't change anything this close to trip but thank goodness I did!
Old and new bearings from dealer both say China but part number on both has a new letter (upgrade?)

16,000 on my 2015 and they have been getting noisy on corners.
Need to look into replacing them.

Some time ago Harley went with a narrower bearing, and ever since those bearings have been failing at a higher rate than the previous bearings.  A combination of cheaper Chinese crap with poor engineering decisions IMHO.  The change occurred in 2008, when they also changed the bearing ID 1.0" to 25.0mm (guess why).

I was happy to see Harley finally go to sealed wheel bearings after many years of the old design (had to repack them each tire change) and was a pain in the booty.  I always thought the person that designed the old set-up would have to change tires in Hell for eternity.  However, I didn't have any tire whine all those years and with the sealed "new" style, whine in the corners where a bearing is more strained has been more prevalent.

Funny that most modern bikes (and cars for that matter) that have sealed wheel bearings don't have the issues that Harley does with theirs.  Jerry is correct, it's cost related to using cheap parts and passing that savings right on to us in poor quality and failures.  The MoCo should have learned that lesson when they moved from Timken bearings on Evo's in the '90s and started having failures.  When they finally moved back to Timken...surprise...failure rate goes down.  It took them a few years to move back, however.

My bike is an 07 and both had to be changed about 25,000 miles. Almost time again I suspect.

Hi All
2018 anniversary made it to just under 5000 miles a few weeks ago and both front failed and failed very quickly

 Like went for a all day ride  morning great and got back around dinner with a few hundred miles on it and sounded like the wheel was going to fall of or explode  WTF

 31 plus years riding and it was a first.And yes i average 6 to 9 k a year

O well check that one off the list and at least i was not trailing any distance wen it happened

Got the rear pulled out today. Mangled my bearing puller on the pulley ones. All were still good. Install the bearing and shocks tomorrow.

You are replacing the bearings with same pt# that failed? What is the latest pt#?  I'm assuming they're the same as an 09.

Replacing the sprocket bearings is easy with a press and impact socket.

I went overboard on mine and purchased some ceramic hybrid from worldwide bearings, they roll easier, lightened my wallet  :drink:

Bearings are not that expensive so I change them with every other new rear tire and every new front tire.

I used a puller on the sprocket. Was it safe to push on the aluminum spacer in sprocket with two bearings resisting?

As for part numbers the dealer sold me the fronts, both bearings have a letter change but that doesn't mean anything. Could be updated part, could be change, but unknown.
Rear bearings I bought on Amazon called AllBalls Racing. Much cheaper   about 45 for all four compared to 50 for two at dealer (one ABS in each purchase) so it was like 2 more regular bearings for free.
Side note- I thought I had a bad ABS in AllBalls kit. Didnt, I put front Harley bearing in backwards. But I went on their webiste..might not support third party purchases...wtf? I sent an email to company anyways so let's see if they answer.

I guess it doesn't matter how bearings are removed, critical in installing however, so whatever works for you. I invested in a 12ton harbor freight press myself.

Does the new bearings have metal shields?

Just remember to use anti seize on the bearings. That is assuming you want to get them out again.
