Starter issue
« on: November 02, 2011, 08:55:58 AM »

Hello all,

Had the compufire starter ring gear installed back in April and the bike been starting on the first try now.

Just recently when pressing the starter switch getting a slow start turning over the engine (battery tested fine and only a year old).

This morning engine turned over half way and stopped, no lights nothing now when I turn on the ignition or depress the starter switch.

Didn't have time to mess with it, will try jump starting when I get home from work as well as checking that all cables are secure.

Question; after searching on the site seems like the starter doesn't go just the starter clutch.

Comments? Bike has 45K on it, solenoid contacts were cleaned back in April and starter rebuild kit done back in 2006 by the dealer.

Time for a new starter or just try the kit from MES?

Thanks

sounds more like battery than anything else

if you jumped it and it started right up probably not a starter issue.  Make sure all your contacts are clean

did you do a load test on the battery

No, I'll add that to the list for this evening.

Thanks.

There are potential problems within the starter that could suck the lights down while you're trying to engage the starter.  But not any other time.  If you've got no lights you've got something else going on.  Most likely bad battery, bad battery cable(s), or dirty or loose cable connection somewhere.  Check the free and easy stuff first.

Slightly loose battery cables, noticed an arc after I took the seat off when I hit the ignition.

Recall the service tech explained on non HD batteries the terminals tend to work themselves loose over time. Put some SS star washers on all the battery terminals to keep from working themselves loose.
 Thanks and ride safe!
