Headlight alignment and adjustment.
« on: November 10, 2009, 01:37:25 AM »

I was just wondering how many of us had to adjust our headlights after we picked up out new CVO's. When I picked up my 09SEUC last year the headlight was way off (pointing down). When I got my Heritage Classic new in 1995 the headlight was pointing down, and when my friend got his 06 Wide Glide his headlight was pointing up to the stars. The adjustment is on page 173-175 of the CVO owner's manuel. Just curious. CAHDBIKER

headlight adjustment is a mandatory part of the dealers assembly and inspection before handing over a new bike - many dealers over here tend to have the headlights point a little too high as they do the adjustment without without any load on the bike.

When mentioned they usually say: "you don't want to ride by night anyway"  ;)

Just adjusted mine last night. I felt it was set far too low for the back country riding I sometimes ride on. Very simple to adjust. Remove one screw under the bezel. Remove bezel. Use allen to turn top screrw in to raise the light or out to lower it it. I also moved both side screws out (equally of course) for a better fit with the visor headlight skirt I installed.

Not only the headlight, but for those with spots you will also need to adjust those.  As for the dealer adjusting the headlight aim, all I can say is "Yeah, right!".  Take a look around your dealer's shop and see if you find a real headlight aiming target with a 25 foot clear and level area in front of it.

The headlight and spots should be aimed reasonably well from the factory.  Final aim will depend on how you load the bike, so I've always assumed I would have to slightly adjust the lights when I buy a new bike.  However, when one spot is pointed into the weeds on the side of the road, and the other down at the centerline of the highway, while the headlight shows off the nice new paint on the front fender, I assume both the MoCo and the dealer figured just having the bulbs actually light up was close enough.

My headlight was so out of adjustment I had to take the front faring off my bike (SERG) and get it closer with the 1 big screw. Then did the final adjustment with the screws behind the faring. I will say though the SERG headlight is the best coverage of light I have ever had.
