Wheels Finally
« on: May 27, 2019, 08:48:30 AM »

Well after going over Ole Punkin last night I finally have chrome peeling on both of the wheels. Not sure what I am going to do BUT would love to keep the stock wheels on the bike. Sooooo what has everyone else done when they were faced with the same problem.

If you really like them, have them re-chromed. It will be cheaper, by a little, than new wheels. I use Advance Plating in Nashville, quality is unsurpassed.

Dawg when I had the peeling on my front wheel luckily the MoCo still had them available.... even though I was out of warranty a call to customer service got me a "good faith" warranty replacement.... probably to late in the game for this to work for you though. :( I too like these wheels and if I have this issue again I'll do as CVODon suggests and have them re-chromed. Good luck on whichever way you go... if you do the re-chroming let me know who you use and how happy you are w/their work.

Mike I sent the ones from the 04 that were peeling to Spacecoast chrome.   They rechromed the wheels better than new just not cheap think it was 600 a wheel

MoCo just flash chromes over the castalloy.  Doesn't hold up well.  Good aftermarket 3-step plating will last a lot lot longer, and a lot of reputable chromers will warranty their work.

From what I've seen, most factory chrome wheels don't make it that long without pitted and flaking chrome unless they are cleaned regularly.

The bike sits in a controlled environment garage and never gets ridden. Yea they may have lasted 15 years BUT the way this bike is taken care of, it should have never happened.

I keep my bike very clean and for the past many years I get silver "dust" from the inside hub area on the rear wheel.  It's an '09 SERG.

The front wheel is now starting to do the same on the inside areas by the rotor.

I do not let brake dust sit on my wheels and use Quick Detailer on every cleaning.  I've had original chrome from a '55 Chevy that's still in better shape than my 10 year old wheels.

It's ridiculous how much they, Harley and the rest, charge for wheels today.  I realize that "some" are made in very low quantities and that does drive up the cost.

Your 55 Chrome is not over Aluminum and was done before the Government decided Chrome procedures could kill you. Brake dust sitting on the wheel, while not a good thing for sure, is not start of the problem. Problem is the brake dust/metal particles are HOT when they come off the brakes and HD chrome is so soft the stuff just bonds instantly to the wheel. I had a guy who ran a chrome shop here (Since passed away) tell me the thing that was important was to use a product that was designed to remove brake dust from chrome. I use A to Z but have read that the Sonax product are much better, and much more expensive. We will see.
