while its sad that there were any deaths, i think most are do to a combination of alcohol and testosterone, helmets will never overcome that

Sad to state, however we have some local folks that were affected by these events.  They are related to some friends of ours.

Husband dead...Wife is critical condition...They do not drink alcohol...

Short article on Bike Week fatalities.  Sad but true:

http://www.floridatoday.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20060313/NEWS01/603130325

The article talks about the nice weather--true.  I didn't go to Daytona but there were so many riders out down here that it almost felt like I was at a rally.

yeah, but I was almost run over by two sheriff cars responding to a call.  no excuse in that either.  The biggest problem is the mixture of too many cars w/ the bikes and throw in the alcohol..... [smiley=drink.gif]....volia!  instant blood-letting.  :'(  spyder

I agree with BigDaddy.  Living down here in the midst of millions of elderly drivers, well, I thought I had seen bad driving before.  Drive around with me for a day and you'll become an advocate for mandatory driver re-testing.  If it weren't for my proximity to the relative safety of the backroads west of the ocean, I might have sold my bike.

The mandatory annual re-test beginning at some advanced age (65, 70 maybe) is a really good idea.

Here is another page, saying the same thing !!   18 killed.
It was my first bike event,,  and my son and I both enjoyed
the experience,, and we will probabaly go again.  I did see a
few times,, cars just change lanes without looking.  That is
what I told my son he had to watch out for.  I figured being
down there in a retirement area,,  you have to be much more
alert on what is going on around you.

Gotta tell ya, I was dissapointed with some bikers.  I noticed quite a few people dropping the hammer in the wrong places.  Twistin' the wick for all it's worth on A1A with everyone pulling out of hotels and making u-turns in the middle of the road is not a smart thing.  I think DBPD did a great job from what I saw.  They only stopped the people doing retarded chit, like driving your bike down a side walk at 20 mph because traffic was jammed!  I believe legislation is coming very soon down the road for driving tests after a certain age.  I know someday I will be in the same situation so hopefully more public transportation will be available...

Unfortunatelly, it's not only the elderly drivers that are causing the bike accidents.  It's all ages ....  young drivers talking on cell phones, eating, etc. or just in a hurry blowing through a stop or yield sign.....or the soccer mom w/ the kids fighting in the back of the SUV who runs over the stopped bike at a intersection or the  road-rage cager that just gets pissed at all the traffic jams caused by the thousands of bikers jamming up their neighborhoods.  And you can go on and on.  I've personally witnessed a couple get run over by a safety vehicle in Daytona that was responding to a call w/ red lights on and pulled right out into the bike.  I watched another couple die as a delivery truck turned into the bikes path and they were going too fast to stop.  My friend had a SC state trooper on I-95 almost cause him to wreck on the way back from Daytona this year as the trooper just pulled right in front of two bikes in the right lane running 75mph w/ no where to go.......luckly a truck in the left lane pulling a bike trailer saw what was happening and swerved just enough to open a hole for the bikes to make it by.  Maybe the real problem is too many people/vehicles.  ????  One accident is too many, but when this many people start dying at one bike event, it'll cause you to question the potential cost of attending.  We all ride w/ the knowledge that accidents can and will happen, but it's sad to see the numbers increase.  :( spyder

Start charging them with vehicular manslaughter and they'll start looking for the motorcycle.

Interestingly enough, in this morning's Sacramento Bee I read where a young lady was charged yesterday for running over a guy on his bike and killing him instantly, last month.  The article said that she's "beleived to have been under the influence of alcohol"........whatever that means, a month later? This was my tenth time to Daytona out of the last twelve. I think there were as many bikes as in the years past. I also think that since the event is getting more spread out so are the riders. While I like the spread out format it does allow for some hammering between stops. I tend to do the Daytona stuff early week while the crowds are still thin. As the bikes roll in I roll out. I rode up A1A to Jacksonville passing through A very nice St. Augistine. I took a trip to Orlando one day just to look around. Another day I ventured down towards Melbourne. I stay in Palm Coast at a buddies house so I have a 30ish mile ride in and out of town each day.

It's sad to hear when someone knows one of the fatalities as in Jock's case.

Sorry to hear about your Friend, Jock.  OTIS and I have a Friend that was traveling to Key West, during Bike Week, 2-up with his Wife on an Ultra, in the passing lane, and the car beside him just pulled right into them.  They'll be OK, I hear, but that could have been fatal.  Later--HUBBARD

Given they had children, it just becomes more difficult...some fund raisers are planned...they did not have the resources to plan for such an event.

I have been to Daytona the last 10 years straight and a few other times before that. I didn't see the crowd any bigger, or smaller for that matter this year. The weather was great and yes there are a lot of old drivers in Florida, those of us who live here know that. But I do have a few questions. Why does anyone ride w/o a helmet? Why do you see bikers riding at speed side by side? Why do bikers run red lights? Why does anyone take a drink and get on a bike? Why does Daytona HD think I would park my bike in sand? Why does Hubbard post on this page? He rides a regular ole mans bike. Lots of questions, no answers. Life goes on.

Remember, a hugh majority of the reported deaths were local Floridians.  Not sure what that means, but it was the great majority of the deaths.    [smiley=nixweiss.gif] spyder

[highlight]Why does anyone ride w/o a helmet?[/highlight] BECAUSE WE CAN.

NO pardon hubbard, you ride a regular bike, no matter much it means to you. Why don't you post on a regular HD page somewhere, I know they exist.
Last time I looked this was a CVO page, not a HD ultra classic page.

One of the best things I have found about CVO riders is the class. They come from all walks of life and ride all different rides, and do it wil class and style. I remember when I found this site, months before taking delivery of my CVO and I was welcomed. The insite I gained was helpfull to me as I prepared to get my first CVO. When it finally sat in my garage I was proud, proud to own a CVO and proud to be in the company of such great people. I am so glad none of them were like you, I might have rethought the purchase. You sir, are an a$$.

Hubbard, let's roll!

Hey DW6019,
I think you should relax and read some of Hubbard's posts. He has more experience and knowledge than many of the folks who own CVOs on this site or off of it. He also has a loyal group of friends who support him and know he is not B.S.ing anyone.
I have not met him face to face but I would be proud to call him a friend and would ride with him anyday.(Although I probably could not keep up with him) [smiley=huepfenlol2.gif]
As far as who is allowed on this site I think that is the site owner's job to make that call and if he doesn't have a problem with it neither should the other members who are on this site at the whim of the site owner too. 8-)
I think all bikers need to support each other and learn from each other. If we subdivide it will be easier to pass helmet laws,EPA regs and other stuff on us because we think it doesn't affect us.
If Eliteism is important to you maybe a BMW would be a better choice of bike?[smiley=nixweiss.gif] (Some features of their bikes are nice too )[smiley=huepfenlol2.gif]
We all should take pride in what we ride but why degrade someone else to try and make yourself feel good about your choice?
DW6019 I wish you many happy and safe miles on your CVO and I hope you have loyal friends to ride with reguardless of what they ride.

P.S. Jock sorry to read about the loss of your friend and his wife. It's definately a reminder of how short and fragile life really is. :'(

You know I would not have even know about the goings on on this thread had it not carried over into another thread. As is, I can't believe what I'm reading  Far as I know, this site is come one come all Harley folks alike and yes we do on occasion even talk about things non Harley. Now I know that I've given Hubbard his share of bullchit and he's given it back to me and some might even suspect there's some tension there, but I don't think so. I think he and I have differing points of view on a couple of subjects and that's as far as it goes. The thing is for perhaps good reasons, perhaps perverse, I would not enjoy the site anywhere near as much as I do without Hubbard around. SO  igonoring the fact that this is Naitram's website and I kinda think he isn't likely to ask ole Hubbard to leave, I believe a lot of the rest of us would also object to that as well. Whatever your issues are you need to get a handle on them and try real hard to remember that this is a FREAKIN CHATROOM DUDE  JESUS,MARY AND  JOSEPH  LIGHTEN UP

PS
Lets also take a moment to remember those lost at Bike Week. They were friends, neighbors, brothers, sisters, moms and dads to someone and they were loved and will be missed dearly  Not everyone is rich and famous and gets headlines when they die. For some a post on a website is the only eulogy they get. So say amen brothers and sisters of the road and be glad your time is not yet at hand and you can still Live to ride and Ride to live

Uh oh someone woke up the master. Some folks on this site don't see eye to eye on some things(obviously)But regardless of what you type of HD you ride we are all bikers or bike enthusiasts. So to call out Hubbard on the fact he doesn't ride a CVO is a little ridiculous,I'm sure there are other things he can be called out on,just like the rest of us.So DW good luck in trying to forge any friendships on this site.Thats my 2 cents.Later,Q

Why does Hubbard post on this page? He rides a regular ole mans bike. Lots of questions, no answers.

The answer to most of your questions........BECAUSE WE LIVE IN AMERICA AND WE HAVE A CHOICE!

To answer the question above.......this web site is open to all, not just CVO owners.  I know, it's sad that Hubbard rides a "regular ole man's bike" while you and I ride a CVO ole man's bike.....but we're working on that.  Again, we're in America.......we have choices.

DW what I'm not reading in your post is a friendly, warm welcome to the other members of this site.......not feelin the love brother.  So it may be you who needs to consider going to play at another site........think about it.

Hey! DW [smiley=nixweiss.gif]
Hey! lets say it came out wrong what you were trying to say, ( A VERY EASY FIX ) Apologize and lets go play again. Either wise your going to end up the hated step child. This is a great site and I just love reading & posting, and if it was the RULE you had to have a CVO I think Naitram would have told them that along time ago. Thats my two cents also!
